Men and double denim

I got a diesel denim jacket recently, and after a some encouragement from herself, wore it with a pair of jeans. They're both dark diesel denim although the jacket is a few shades lighter.

Tell you what, am not half getting some stares in town, mostly from women. After a quick google it appears the expert view is I'm committing a serious fashion faux pas. I don't really care, it feels nice. I'm not overweight or anything and they fit well.

So whats the boards verdict on double denim for blokes ? Or should I just get a pair of combats ?

In general double denim was/ is a faux pas, but lots of blogs have retracted that. In general I try to keep double denim very different- ie if I'm wearing a denim shirt I'll make sure there's a big difference in the shades.

But whatever, if you like it who cares?

When someone as handsome as Justin Timberlake can't pull it off, that probably says a lot. To be avoided IMHO.

This video is what comes to me when I think of double denim. No one has wore double denim since the early 2000s and neither are combats in anymore. If you watch around Dublin, most men are wearing chinos or trousers. Jeans still popular but not as popular as they used to be. No one wear denim jackets anymore, but denim shirts are popular.

Maybe you should glance at GQ in Easons and see what people are wearing now. Keep it simple or you are not sure. You cant wrong with a white t-shirt and black or blue jeans. Never wear a top that is the same colour as your pants

    Throw it in the bin.

I 've a friend who works in shop and has a stall that sells second hand denim jackets and jeans , an ordinary second hand Levi Strauss jacket sells for anywhere between 35 and 60 euros , there are also collectors items , some go for hundreds of euros and occasionally thousands depending on the age, type and quality.
One to watch for is a Levi Strauss denim jacket with two rather than four pockets and pre 1980 jeans.

So maybe don't throw them in the bin.

    I think it's awful. It's a real 80's throwback and looks terrible.

That being said, for unknown reasons it came back into fashion for women recently, but something being in fashion doesn't mean it looks good.

I mostly wear denim jackets with my jeans and I am male. I think that nothing compliments a nice pair of jeans more than a matching denim jacket. I even go for ' triple denim ' that is jeans worn with a denim shirt and jacket. I cannot figure out why some people consider it so wrong for a man to wear a denim jacket with jeans even though women wear that combination all the time.

I agree. Last time I wore denim jeans and a jacket was the 90s ( almost identical to the ones I'm wearing now ) and nobody said anything then. Men have wearing this for decades, I dont see what the fuss is.

Could be worse. Could be a pair of skinny jeans and a beer belly :pac:

My father wears jeans and denim shirts, and has done since the 70's when he had very questionable facial hair and a weird Rory Gallagher-style hairdo. That's all I can think of when I see double denim: a bad 70's throwback!

Wear your denims with pride! Who cares about the so called experts on Google and what they say. If you feel good and look good in denim jeans and jacket, then just wear them. All those women in town who were staring at you when you were in double denim were admiring you for your style and appearance. Rock those denims! And ignore the negative comments.

Denim should only be worn below the belt tbh.

Sounds like a real cool dad! Good for him! The 70s, best decade ever, plenty of denim and long hair!

If he had even the vaguest resemblence to RG he must have been awesome indeed ;)

Rotten on both men and women, imo.

IMO, there is something very sexy about a woman in skin-tight jeans and a matching well fitted denim jacket. And of course, a man can look very cool and casual dressed in double denim. A denim jacket or denim shirt is the ideal match for the perfect pair of jeans, IMO.

Like everything with clothes, it's what you feel comfortable in and if like the look yourself then go for it. If you fear others reactions to you wearing double denim, then it's not right for you. I'd find it odd that people actually stared at OP for wearing them - hardly a watercooler moment! - they mustn't have much else going on in their lives!

However, personally, I wouldn't wear it now (haven't done so since the 90s!). I think it is a bit of a dated look that went out with line dancing! Combats are also kind of dated. I find you only see 40something guys wearing combats now because they mistakenly think they look trendy, not realising everyone else stopped wearing them 10 years ago. Combat shorts are ok though, imo.

I do think a denim shirt with chinos or casual trousers would look great. Likewise, there are infinite possibilities with jeans and any type of non denim shirt/top/tee/jacket/blazer. Contrasts between tops and bottoms always work better on a guy I think.

From a fashion perspective: No, don't do it!

You can almost, almost get away with a light (as in a thin material) denim shirt and denim jeans, like this beautiful man from avantengarde's link, but a jeans and jacket combo is basically a suit made of denim. Not a good look.

Now having said all that, if you feel good in it then to hell with fashion! Rock that Canadian tuxedo :p

I think it's a horrible look. But then, I hate denim jackets anyway, I think they're vile things

I've never heard it referred to as a Canadian tuxedo though! We used to always call it the Mullingar suit :p

I think it looks good, I dont care much about fashion. Besides, I couldnt listen to fashion advice from a fellow in skinny jeans and oversized headphones while keeping a straight face.

And I should have said cargo pants rather than combats - i.e., the plain ones not the patterned camouflage types. Awesome trousers.

Theres no doubt they can look cheesy, but as a previous poster said, its a look than can come off quite well.

You started a thread in Fashion & Appearance Forum. It's not necessary that everyone here is a fashionista (I'm not) but it is likely that double denim look will be disliked by more people than just blokes in skinny jeans and over sized headphones.

I don't like denim jackets, they rarely look good on people and and I think double denim look is too much. Yes some people can pull it of but they are not the norm. It is up to you what you want to wear, neither you need to listen to any advice. World would be way too boring if everybody would look the same. But I think you should show others he same courtesy as you are expecting for yourself. We are all entitled to our opinions.

OP it's a very risky move but it CAN work as long as the denim on the upper half and the bottom half don't match or come close to matching (example: http://us.asos.com/ASOS-Denim-Jacket/10ysfw/?iid=3134811&SearchQuery=denim&Rf-700=1001&Rf900=3471&sh=0&pge=0&pgesize=204&sort=-1&clr=Blue&mporgp=L0FTT1MvQVNPUy1EZW5pbS1KYWNrZXQvUHJvZC8.).

If it's dark navy denim then try pair it with black or dark grey jeans. Also, both the jacket and the jeans should be slim fitting at least. If you're wearing baggy jeans and a jacket of fairly similar denim washes you'll definitely be giving off a dodgy dad look.

Lol..the dodgy dad look. I know what you mean.

I'll be rockin the DD tomorrow night. If I see any brethren similarly attired I might chance a nod of approval. Or a gun and a wink. Unless its baggy and matchy , then I'll just pretend to look at something on the ground. :p

From a lady here,I think double denim on a guy can look really cool and 1950's like teddy boys think of the slick backed hair, shades and turn ups at the end of the jeans with black shoes,i think it looks very slick and cool as long as your'e not over-weight,even the tiniest bit of weight can make you look very well fat and frumpy..Even if you are a small bit chubby - steer clear,as double denim is a hard look to pull off..

If you are good looking young and thin - go for it.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,013 ✭✭✭Ole Rodrigo

    Thin ? Check.

Young ? Meh.. few years left before falling apart. Check.

    Good looking ? CHECK !
