It is a great source of resentment on my part that the government/councils didn’t encourage and facilitate safe outdoor gatherings during this ‘lockdown’. Dun Laoghaire market could easily have been held down the road in Hudson Park.

They didn't need to encourage it. There were busy gatherings on the green between DL and Sandycove at weekends, with loads of groups (not youngsters either) and lots of take-away pints.

I’ve come across you before in the cycling forum. You’re obnoxious. Either read my post properly or don’t engage.

I’m disappointed you’ve taken that line, because I’ve liked what you’ve said in other comments. It does not seem unreasonable to me to criticise the government’s complete failure to promote safe socialising during a pandemic that’s persisted for a year. How patronising to say I haven’t considered consequences.

    You haven't.

At its worst in this pandemic "safe socialising" was a contradiction in terms. The job of anyone who normally held events or focal points for people gathering was to suspend them. Thats what happened the markets.

I know its from a Cork City radio station  but an interesting interview and perspective of Dun Laoighaire / Ballybrack life in the late 60's early 70's with journalist Philip Nolan. Also gives his views on the proposed development in St. Michaels.

Starts at 1:47 and runs for about 15mins.

Be careful that you don't catch a Cork accent:D

It was bought by a chap who owns several pubs in Dublin and as far as I know they are hoping to open asap. Weeks rather than months I think

I reckon they'll do really well. Best of luck to them

It's about time that something was done with this premises as it has remained unused for the better part of a decade. Do you know what it will be called?

On a similar note, I passed by "Buck Henry's" (Formerly Lime Bar and Nemo's before that). I wonder what will happen to it?

Is it the guy who owns Housethat was rumoured to have bought it a couple of years ago? Agree they'll likely do well as there's soon to be nowhere that end of dun laoghaire

    And Trader's Wharf before that.

4 different pubs in the same spot in 20 years is never a good sign. I imagine the huge decline of DLR shopping centre made things a lot harder for anyone to succeed there

I saw another multi pub owner, who's from dalkey and a name not too dissimilar to your username, poking around Walters

Having taken a closer look at the old Walters unit and how much work has to be done, I am revising the below estimate ðŸ˜

Oh yeah no question, it has needed a complete internal rebuild since a post closure incident 7 or 8 years ago.

If they started work tomorrow they may get it open for Christmas, thats the job of work for whomever takes it on.

That happened quickly. I noticed that they some publications on the matter phrased it as a dismantling as opposed to outright demolition. Does this mean that the structures are likely to be reinstated at some point in the future?

And you didn't think that might just be County Council bullshyt speak for tidy demolition?

Does it look like they took it apart brick by beam and put it back in a box for future use?

    Lol.

There’s a good chance they did dismantle it. They generally have to strip out the cable and plumbing etc before levelling it.

That square has the potential to go one of two ways.

It could be a really nice outdoor space for families to eat and socialize, or it could be a handy replacement for the upcoming demolition of the Boylan centre and the “regulars” who hang around there.

Like most of these things, the direction it takes will be 100% dependant on policing and enforcement of the area. I wouldn’t be too optimistic.

I think I said it before on this thread, But I see it as the new Dunphy's beer garden.

I agree, I think it's the wrong place for a plaza.

The surroundings, about which they can do nothing, are crap. The square itself will be in shadow relatively early in the day, all day in winter. The truck deliveries to the Bloomfields Centre will still have to travel through it, so its hardly going to be an oasis of calm, or safety.

I think removing real estate from a Town that needs activity, investment and so on, was a mistake. Those buildings could have been renovated as social housing, hot desking space, social enterprise centre, anything to bring spending power, footfall, presence.

And Myrtle is an old Australian woman, not a public space.

The new plaza could be nice but there aren't really that many bars and restaurants that end of the town it will benefit bar Dunphy's of course. There's already a bit of a plaza area either side of St. Michael's Church which isn't that nice a place to sit.

The thing is really though that if your in DL and you want somewhere to socialise outdoors your gonna obviously pick the seafront and not the town itself. Also blocking off vehicular access to that area would improve the plaza a bit more. Also thing they should install a bus shelter there as the stop outside Argos is generally busy enough. I also wonder would Argos want to put an entrance to the plaza from their shop.

Also any update on the baths. They seem to be taking forever thought they were meant to be complete for Summer 2020 but they don't look anywhere near complete.

Okay construction was suspended during covid for 2 months during the first lockdown and 4 months during the most recent Level 5 restrictions but the baths don't look like they're even 6 months away from completion. They must be running way behind schedule as even if they were done to the original timeframe they should have been completed for late last year.

Last I heard it was to be September, but I doubt that somehow.

Yeah on the St Michael's mention, I don't know why the Council didn't work with the Church to create a proper square where that old forecourt is in front of the Church, that should be the heart of the town, so much potential with a bit of imagination.
