Would these scopes suit a .17 rimfire. They say there specifically for 22's. Can anyone recommend a scope for a .17.

PROSTAFF 3-9x40 Rimfire Matte BDC 150

The new 3-9x40 Rimfire integrates the .22 LR-specific BDC 150 reticle and a 50-yard parallax setting for confidence and precision out to 150 yards and beyond.

Nikon do very nice glass, you will not be disappointed with one, but i'd go for a bit more mag if you want it on the 17, the 4-12x40 BDC would be ideal.

I have the 4-12 version on a 22lr, it will never come of it, unless it's robbed of it.

    ronn,
Which .17 are we talking about? How fast is it compared to the 22lr? If they are similar, you should be alright.

The biggest problem I can see is that the BDC 150 reticle is engineered for the 22LR. If you have a round that is much faster, you'll have to figure out the corresponding distances to your round.

I would check to see if there is a "conversion" chart. I bet there is.

The Prostaff range is one of the best bang for your buck. For what you pay, you get a great scope. I really like the BDC reticle. I have one on a 30-06 and she never lost zero.

    Thanks for all the replys.
The rifle is a Cz 17hmr american. would I be better going for a scope that isn't BDC150 specific to the 22lr.

It's a brand new gun so I'd like to get a new scope and the scope I'd like to get would stay on the rifle for its life.
In other word I don't want to buy a cheap scope to change it in a few years. Trying to get it right the 1st time.

    Thanks Ron

The .17hmr has no kick at all so a cheaper scope will work. The only reason to go for a more expensive scope is clarity.

The .17 has a range of 200 yards. I know some will say it'll shoot longer, but a .308 will shoot a mile if you''re good enough, but lets stay within it's effective range. Soyou need a scope that will give you good clarity and target image out to 200 yards. That means, depending on your preferences in magnification, a scope of up to 16, 18 or 24 power. Then look at the budget you have. Lastly what falls into that category.

I have a Hawke Varmint SF on mine. It's a great little scope and was perfect on my .22lr. It's working a treat on the .17 out to 200 yards. Now when i try to look out further with the clarity drops but i cannot use the rifle out to these distances so i see no need for a high end scope (unless you can afford to stick one on it).

Other brand sin the same price range would be Bushnell Banner, Redfield or some second hand Higher models of the same brand. So a second hand Sidewinder, Bushnell, Minox, Redfield, etc.

Try look for something over 42-44mm objective lens. I found this a draw back for the longer shots in lower light.

I got a Nikko sterling nighteater 30mm 4-16x50 delivered to my door from the UK in no time for 200euro.

Would highly recommenced it. Great value for money.

Looking through it beside a more expensive hawke eclipse 3-12x56 its still very impressive in low light and clear and very good for lamping.

I cant see how a more expensive scope would benefit me in any way on it..

Hawke varmint are another good scope, I was going to go for one but I wanted a 30mm tube to suit my mounts.

I use a prostaff 3 x9 x 50 on my 6.5 and I have shot out to 250 yards no problem. It would be fine on your. 17
    I think there to cheap!

    Ronn,
If you can afford a Swaro, S&B, or US Optics, stop reading this post and buy one immediately. Case closed. They are that much better.

If you are still reading... Do not buy a cheap scope. I would take iron sights over a Tasco or the like.

There are plenty of scopes out there that will get the job done without breaking the bank: Nikon, Bushnell, Burris, Redfield, and Leupold to name a few.

Get a good scope, buy lots of ammo, and shoot.

Also, what are you looking to do with the scope? Targets? Bunnies?...

Big targets need small magnification. Small targets need big magnification.

I think the scopes you're recommending might be a bit o/t for a .17, I think if I had a deer gun then I'd be investing in top notch glass.

So I think ill be looking at a Nikon or bushnell or hawke scope. Just have to figure out which would be best.

Ps, I don't mean to be rude/ come across as rude. I thank you for your advice and opinion.

    Thanks ronn
