I don't see how people find them beautiful etc. I just shuddered when I saw a photo there now and people saying how gorgeous he is when he looks like a wrinkly ball sack.

Are you being genuine when you say it or are you saying it just to go along with the happy mood of the birth of a baby?

No offence to all you little babies out there ;)

Saying it just to go along with happy mood of birth

They all look like aliens. People just say they're gorgeous cos it's not polite to say it looks like a scrotum with eyes!

Babies aren't really cute until a few months, newborns are weird looking. some babies are ugly, there I said it.

I think newborns are beautiful! They're so sweet and helpless. How could you think newborns are ugly???

Have 3 of my own, I always thought mine were beautiful, which is probably all you can think after spending almost 10 long months creating something. But I would still have to agree with above that I have never seen other newborns as cute until they are a few weeks old, yes they all look like little aliens.

Not being a teenager, I don't feel that I'm betraying my deep principles of verisimilitude by not admitting to my friends that most newborn babies look like they've been hit with a baseball bat.

You won't throw us off the scent that easily, Rolf.

Considering where they've spent the previous nine months they don't look too bad.

Aww, he looks just like his father with his compressed skull, wispy hair, toothless gums and swollen jaw muscles.

Newborn animals [e.g. - Puppies and kittens, foals, etc.] are generally cute.

    HUMANS on the other hand...

So are old people, which newborns look like miniature versions of.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,648 ✭✭✭Cody Pomeray

"Gorgeous"/ "a dote" is more a reference to their tinyness/ vulnerability and the excitement about their arrival. It's not about their actual 'looks', imo.

What's the difference in a baby girl and a baby boy?

One sits on its ass and cries, the other sits on its ass and bawls.

Especially if the child is theirs

They had to use a ventouse and a forceps on my first son so his head was actually conical looking (with a big red ring mark on it) when he came out.

I remember abstractly thinking it would have been quite funny if I wasn't shitting it so much.

They look like aliens for the first ten minutes or so covered in goo, swollen face and purple. After a while while they turn the proper colour and are cute then. As a parent of course they are the most beautiful thing you'll ever see :)

Some old people are sweet and helpless and they're lovely. Even the ones that aren't helpless :p Unfortunately I've come across many old people who are evil wizened bigots. They're not so nice.

Objectively they're weird looking. Subjectively:Look at their teeny fingers!

Because I think newborns aren't beautiful. Yep, good conclusion Arnie.

prey animals are more fully-formed at birth, so they can leg it from danger immediately. Predators like us are born like useless, cranky, hairy slugs. Though babies born by c-section tend to be a bit less wrinkly, probably because they haven't been squished through a flange. That said, I don't mind what they look like; it's the noise of them that's ugly.

They look like oddly-mobile prunes (wouldn't that be a just wonderful name for a rock band?? :D) just after birth. After a while, when they get a good yowl on and start to get a bit of blood moving they basically look like Winston Churchill for the next six months or so. It's hard to say which is weirder. After that it's just about possible to see them as small people. They're great, though - after all, we're hard-wired to think so.

Oh yeah, I'm convinced there's a knob card that old people get once they hit a certain age that makes them think they can just be sour old fcuks to everyone, old women are the worst

Some newborns are genuinely beautiful. Some aren't. But I still 'aww' over them because they're so teeny tiny and helpless.

My own looked like an alien. They don't tell you that babies' facial features can often be a bit swollen at first. Once her face went down, and she turned into a normal colour (she had jaundice) she was beautiful. Ish.

At least it doesn't take months for them to walk and feed themselves. Humans are kinda crap that way.

Tiny little Winston Churchills. I have to fight the urge to slip a cigar into one wee hand and a glass of whiskey in the other.

Well, I for one do think new born babies are sooooooo cute and I can't wait to have another one... and this is coming from a woman whose baby was born at 28 weeks gestation so looked kinda like

    this

    but actually completely like

    this

Who doesn't love that little guy?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,461 ✭✭✭--Kaiser--

Little babies look like potatoes or like mini Winston Churchills. Anyone who thinks they are beautiful or that they can see resemblances to relatives is deranged

Yep, they all look like bulldogs sucking piss off a nettle or Winston Churchill for the first week or so, then they're cute. TBF, you can't tell a parent that (I am a parent BTW, and I take no offence at it what so ever, cos I agree).

After a crash Caesarean section on my first, one of the hospital cleaners told me she could tell I had a section, because "section babies are the pretty ones".

Aw I think newborn babies are cute :D

I have two nieces both absolutely gorgeous when born and twin nephews born over 5 weeks early and teeny tiny and both still gorgeous!

Maybe when its family its different but I'm yet to see an ugly newborn!

You can too, I've told several mothers their babies look like potatoes (but only if they prompted 'isn't she cute/beautiful/adorable')

Why do it though... sure aren't they all little stunners

I personally always said it first, cos well it was true, but feck it sure I always revert to the usual congrats he/she is FABULOUS! Not comment on the bulldog looks at all and you've still given a compliment :)

A lady I work with had a baby recently. She's an attractive lady herself and her husband isn't bad looking. I'll be shot for saying it, but the baby is the ugliest looking thing I have ever seen. It's almost four months now and unfortunately doesn't seem to be improving with age.
This is not just my opinion. Everyone at work has said the same thing!
She recently put up a picture/quote on her Facebook page that says "Not only am I an amazing mother, but I made a pretty damn good looking kid too. Yeah, you should be jealous. BOOM". So so wrong.

Wouldn't criticise ya for saying the baba was not the easiest on the eyes, but FFS you have to know the gender

No offense but that's total dick speak

I wish I had the guts to say that, seriously. All of the women where I work bring in their new babies to be cooed over and they're always trying to foist them on me, like I want to hold them or something. I don't, babies are strange creatures and I don't want anything to do with them until they're old enough to teach rude words to.

    "Isn't he/she adorable/cute/precious?"
"Madam, I hate to be the one to give you this news, but your son is a potato."

    This thread is hilarious.

I think most newborn babies are really beautiful and pretty - some are ugly though

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

Not too bothered about what they look like but I don't need to see a picture of them on Facebook within half an hour of being released into the world. Some people have weird priorities.

Was trying to be slightly subtle in case aforementioned mother happened to read this, but if you really want to know, the baby is a girl, and as for "No offense", of course not, I never take offence if someone calls me a dick!
