Spa break for one - recommendations

Can anyone recommend a spa suitable for the solo girl please? I've never been to one and I just want to go somewhere alone to relax in peace and quiet and get a couple of treatments done.

I have a car so it doesn't really bother me where in the country it is, just as long as it has good treatments, nice food and quiet.

    Lough Erne Resort and Spa.

I can't vouch for the quality of the treatments, but the setting is as relaxed as you will find anywhere.

Monart is highly recommended by a friend of mine, a gorgeous spot.

Monart is highly recommended by a friend of mine, a gorgeous spot.

It's fab, I'm headed there myself this weekend :) You'd get a lot of people visiting there on their own too so you definitely wouldn't feel at all out of place.

The Ritz Carlton in Enniskerry is wonderful too, but pricy. Very discreet Spa, very relaxing and great food.

Farnham Estate in Cavan is gorgeous, I'd go back for the infinity pool alone!

I third Monart! From a friend's recommendation, she went there recently on her own and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Keep an eye out on GrabOne Offers. They occasionally have Massages and Spa Treatments on there at reduced prices.

(PS: for any Dub ladies into their food lol I see there's an Offer at the mo. for a place called Rody Boland's in Rathmines; - €19 for what seems like a looooooooad of food!! :pac: No idea what the Establishment is like but it could be a decent offer? )

I am looking for the same, OP, so appreciate your thread. Also, thanks to all the contributers. I would like to do it on a tight budget though, so will keep an eye out on all the Citydeal/ Dealpages offers.

I've gone on spa breaks alone, I'd thoroughly recommend it. Are you based in Dublin? Here are a few recommendations, ive been to others also, so if you have questions let me know. Treatments were all pretty good in the ones I've suggested.

Monart..excellent but quite pricey, child free destination. Less than 1.5 hours from Dublin. Very relaxing, you can wander around in your bathrobe other than at dinner time.

Farnham...less pricey than Monart. Think it's a four star hotel. I've been there a few times, keep going back because I love it (and it's cheaper than Monart). There are loads of walks you can do in the grounds, theres also a small gum there. The breakfast there is great, good variety of options, free newspapers. Again about 1.5 hours from Dublin.

Druids Glen...probably around 45 mins from Dublin, so it's a winner on location for me. Nice jacuzzi, pool, plunge pool etc. breakfast is good but probably not on a par with Farnhameven though I think it's a five star hotel. Bar is lively, i also ate in the golf club, food was nice there. Nice secluded location

Hmmm not sure, ate there (admittedly its a while ago) and the chip were frozen (as in served STILL frozen in middle). Mother Reillys nearby is nice with an extensive menu.

Between farnham and druids glen, I think I much preferred farnham, recommend it

Maryborough house in Cork. Lovely spa area.

Great idea for a thread OP. The only spa break I have had (and I went on my own) was to Brooklodge in Wicklow. It was absolutely lovely, very relaxing and the food is AMAZING. They grow a lot of the food themselves on the grounds and do a lot of organic stuff. They have a spa and a pool/leisure area. I was there mid-week in May last year and had the pool to myself for most of the day :)

I must take note of the others mentioned here - Monart and Farnham sound great ;)

For one the Marybourgh spa hotel in Cork been the best for me other than a few between Mayo and Kerry and other parts of Cork and Galway. I've been to a few spas in Kerry been a lovely experience.

Ooh brilliant! Loads to choose from, I'm swaying towards Farnham, when I saw it written down I remembered an ex colleague raving about it a couple of years ago. I would go midweek so should be really quiet and relaxing.

Thank you all so much for replies! :)

Oh really? They give the best deep tissue massages, no offence to massage therapists but I find a physio really gets into the muscle. That's good to know!

It's a good few months since I was there but yeah he was utterly amazing so ask for him, don't remember his name but I'd say they'll know
    Was very impressed

Monart! I was there last Thursday by myself for the day and it was absolute bliss!

I wasn't overly impressed with the service at Farnham. In fact I found the spa reception quite rude.

Loved Seafield when I was there. Beautiful indoor and outdoor pools, lots to do before you even go for a paid treatment. Great food too.

G hotel in Galway, treatments and peace is lovely though has a price tag.

Delphi lodge and spa quality on all counts.

I'm just back from Dunboyne Castle and SPa - fab! Better (and a lot cheaper than Monart, I thought)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 166 ✭✭Susie564

Farnham is excellent but for value for money you can't beat The Osprey in Naas. Not quite as luxurious as some of the others but treatments are always excellent, lovely staff and good food. I've been to Druids Glen - the spa area was a bit of a let down for me but was otherwise lovely. Would also recommend the spa in the radisson in Sligo but have never stayed in the hotel itself.

DUnboyne is nice and quite reasonable.
Carton House is lovely and I love the one in Johnstown House.

Have to second about Dunboyne, lovely pool/thermal suite area and they do monthly special offers so can work out very reasonable

Go for it. The facial I had there is the best I've ever experienced, and I'm a facial junkie so there's been a few :D

That's a pretty good deal actually, I'd be very tempted to go for it too. Have a relaxing walk up in Crone woods, pop into Avoca Powerscourt for some fresh food then into the Spa for a few hours' of doing nothing. Pretty perfect way to spend a day!

The Spa will provide you with lovely robes, slippers/ flip flops/ lockers/ luxury hair products in showers etc.

    Sold! :D
Friend and I have our birthdays within a week of each other so we asked what do you want, then came up with that idea. Hopefully we get to do it :D

Have done both Dunboyne and Monart. They don't really compare, Dunboyne is a hotel where you may have functions blaring and kids running around the hotel. Monart is adult only and a spa first and foremost, no "Fields of Athenry" at 3 am.

I have been back to Monart every year since it opened. Try to get a room overlooking the back of the hotel -ie looking out onto the lake.If you can go midweek , you will get some really good deals.

Myself and my friend are heading to Ritz Carlton for my birthday. It looks great and good offers at the moment. Cant wait :-)

Dunboyne is chilly & bleak. It is filled with long corridors & people & children yelling . They shunt you from lounge area to bat to nightclub as the evening goes on so they can turn off the radiators. & let the staff home early. I wouldn't recommend it from our experiences there.

Radison SAS -Cavan -Farnam -is FABULOUS. You can spend the day there in the spa in your fluffy bathrobe & not spend a penny on treatments . V cool foot spa area , ice pools for tired feet, sauna with little window to look out on the countryside on, different types of tropical rainforest showers, HUGE Warm natural daylight lounge area with tons of magazines, poolside bar service ( can't remember if this was just healthy stuff like smoothies), heated infinity pool with cows walking by, lots of room to swim in, cafe attached to spa so you can dine in your fluffy robe & not have to get out of your swimsuits, poolside service. What's not to like.

Monart was obscenely expensive for far far less.

Carlton didn't let us use the pool or spa when we went there for meal & spa treatments - residents only policy - and the treatment " rooms" we're tiny ; & I mean TINY with shower curtain type dividers :(

Powerscourt -the OLD one not the ritz Carlton was shocking poor - I would consider it an early 80's effort - and very overpriced. I wouldn't even consider it.

I bought Ritz Carton stay & spa as a gift for my mom & went down to check it out - big sleek James Bond shimmering black underground pool, beautiful treatment rooms, & the most amazing afternoon lunches with mad deserts -lavender biscuits with cardamon & rum icecream - that kind of thing -I tried that part - fab! Treated like royalty.

I really liked the treatments in the Radison Galway ; big very Thai style treatment rooms - underground but beautifully done - & fabulous service. Not really anywhere you could hang out after thou for the rest of the day .

Castle Durrow is an AMAZING place to stay if you get the old four poster bed rooms & just want to hang out in the general areas. They serve you fab treats & teas : ) They have lovely Victorian style treatment rooms but no pool or anything ; you could go ( horse!) riding in the afternoon if you booked it!!

Le Spa Therapie in Mslahide used to be fab but it's not residential - its been taken over now but the place was really beautifully laid out with great style & staff. You could do worse than to book in for a few treatments there & head for an evening meal in the Michelin star place across the road - groupon sometimes do deals - or to one of the ( many!) great lical restaurants - or stay in the Grand which has a pool & leisure centre ( thou this will be jammed with kids!) or do a B&B in one of the places overlooking the sea & do all that outdoor healthy chillaxing thing too.

I had friends over last weekend & they got an amazing deal at the Portmarnock Spa & Golf Links - the old country club - main meals, breakfasts, 2x spa treatments & 2 nights accommodation for I think e150 each!!! They loved it & the pics looked fab!!

Thanks a million for the tip... I'm going there for a few nights in a weeks time :D

I was just wondering what the etiquette is like though... I've never been to a spa in my life! I've a few treatments booked, but I've no idea what to wear and/or bring when coming and going from the spa (or even just going down to the pool!). Any advice appreciated :o Even down to do you have to bring your wallet down or do they just charge everything to your room and settle the bill when checking out? Don't want to make a fool of myself :P

I know every place is probably a bit different, so if there is any advice for Farnham in particular that would be great, but even some generic advice from anyone would be appreciated :o

They tell you explicitly at the time or are happy to answer questions on it :)

In farnham, you can just wear your swimsuit or underwear and bath robe and slippers directly from the room and don't have to bring anything if you want to just charge it to your room and settle it later
They give you a towel at the little spa reception desk if you want to use the pool IIRC

I felt a bit odd wandering around the hotel in a housecoat but everyone else was doing it as well so yeah

That's great, thanks a million :) Yeah the idea of walking around in a robe sounds a little odd to me, but I'll adjust :D (first word problems eh?! :P)
