Men-would you take your wife's surname?

I was talking recently with my Swedish former housemate and the issue of double-barrelled names that appear to becoming rife. She told me that her brother in law took his wife's family name because he preferred it. 'Problem solved', I thought.

As someone who is becoming phobic about double-barrelled names in my generation, I decided that I'm not so attached to my own family name that given the choice of that or a double-barrel name, I'd probably choose a change rather than an addition.

    Thoughts?

Probably not, I'm fairly happy with my name. I wouldn't expect a future wife of mine to change either. Not worth the hassle really.

Sure, if I liked her name more than mine.

    Mr. Hugh Jass?

    No thank you.

If the double barrelled name sounded cool, then I'd have absolutely no problem with it.

I'd rather different names than double barrel nonsense. What happens when the children want to get married and want quadruple barrel names? Where will then madness end.

    Honest answer? No.

Not so much that I would have a problem with it. More that I don't think I could have a happy marriage with a woman who would want this.

It depends on the name and it's significance. My father is an O'Connor and he married an O'Neill. So you have the last Irish Royal Family in O'Connor (Rory O'Connor the last High King) and the last Gaelic power of Ulster in O'Neill.

A double barrell surname like that would be a bit too forceful sounding though. However I'd love to walk to a RAAAA boy with a planters surname and ask him to explain his heritage. :pac::pac:

to be fair if you trace anyones ancestry on this island they probably have an english surname somewhere within 5 generations, likely the same over in england with irish surnames.

Surely being the descendant of the king who swore fealty and agreed to Ireland being carved up by the British is more of a loyalist heritage than having some distant ancestor who was probably press ganged into fighting for the English?
