I just got to know "One shot on kill" through Boards.ie we have hunted Foxes and I have put him in contacted with people I hunted with long time ago and I miss that, he rang me tonight to say he was on his Permission for this year and got talking to another Farmer who knows the people I new years ago small World so here we go, a 245 is what is needed to start what type is best, I am holding onto the .22 LR / Winchester 101 shot Gun so with this edition what will I need in Securing the gun in the House. I am going to sell anything I have to get the money together to buy a good Rifle with Mod if Possible Can you all help out.;)

Sorry mate I miss read ur post , def a gun safe lad I think and am 99% sure you don't need a house alarm with 3 !

Cass would ans that very quick tho !

At worst it would be a house alarm and with the way places are been robbed these day , it wouldn't be a bad addition to any house hold really !

No extra security needed just as long as you have room in the safe for it.

Cheers German Pointer, I have a Gun Safe / Alarm on the House / so other than that it's business as usual just apply for the Gun. I am sure I will get a very good Scope on here.:D

    Thanks.

You should be ok security wise. A 243 is a deer rifle and there are plenty of more calibers to choose from aswell. Which is best is a hard question. Because it depends what is comfortable for you and what you can shoot best.

Your contacts is most definitely going to be the man to talk to on that. As regards price wise on guns. That's a mine field in my experience. If you want a second hand rifle I'd start looking now because it could be months before you see what you want and it could be the far side of the country. Plenty of second hand guns out there. Ye there definitely is but finding something that you like is a challenge.

Also try not blow your load to early as when you get the rifle you will need to the scope a mod if you want one then shooting sticks a knife some insurance, boots a good hand held light for the early mornings and late evenings more than Lilly a set of binos. Then you have to think about private land or a lease and also when you take a deer how your gonna process it and where. ( only tonite I told you how I was doing mine so he will do more I'd say ).

More than likely I forgot something. Best of luck and take advice but make your own decision. Because advice can vary a fair bit.

There was a fixed 8x56 Hungarian S&B in the for sale section a few days back, that would have been ideal, but I see its sold:rolleyes:also, you might look a bit more at calibre choice, maybe a .270 or even a .308 might be more suitable for what you want, espically if your not on for tradeing up in the near future.

The minimum security measures for up to three unrestricted guns is a safe. The fact you have a safe with a house alarm only means you should be well set. So no need for anything more (afaics).

The land permissions. Are you using the club grounds or separate permissions. You say through One shot on kill you know the people he knows so maybe it's through them. Either way get the permissions in writing.

A .243 is a good caliber to start with. Powerful enough to do the job, great for foxing in the off season, and still a very manageable gun in terms of ammo, price, recoil, usage, etc.

In second hand guns it's hard to give details. Each dealer will have his own prices, and God knows what they have in stock. However i can suggest a few guns, and scopes to get you started while not being pieces of crap.

The Tikka Hunter. In .243. Sean Harding was doing these for €750 brand new. Allowing for the fact they have gone up a little allow €850 for the rifle. It's the Tikka action, but in timber stock with blued barrel. It's already threaded for a mod. This rifle topped off with the Hawke Sidewinder would set you back €1,300 (all brand new). A mod you could pick up here, second hand, for €150 at the most. Allowing for knife, sticks, and other smaller bits you are looking at €1,500 or so.

If you facny something a little better then look at what i' going for. The Sako A7. I'm going for one in .243 and brand new, cash price, they are €1,300. I'm sticking a Hawke on mine, with new A-tec mod. The entire package is coming in at €2,000. It's lightweight, compact, feels great, and in .243 is exactly the caliber i want.

The Tikka hunter will be in the same price range as the cheaper models of other brands such as Savage, Remington, Marlin, etc. So the price tag of €1,500 for all the gear new is a decent minimum to keep in mind.

Second hand you are looking at the same price tag, but for a slightly better brand or model. Cannot think of anything else so if you have any other questions lash away.
