instead of dragging an old thread up i will post a new one
when i bought my .17hmr off the local gun dealer a couple of year ago he had tape stuck to the stock and when he peeled it off some of the lacquer come away with it and it has been like this for a long time

    Nice overall finish.

Would ya mind walking through the process. From stripping the lacquer to how you finished the stock. Have an old stock lying around and have been meaning to do something with it for a while, but not sure where to start on stripping the lacquer.

Also is the finish because of the tru oil or was it your preferred finish colour? Any recommendations on a wood stain for a darker finish like the original colour of your stock?

i should have made a video of the process but its a bit late now but anyway i followed a 3 part video on tubelube
    part 1
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BkIDm_2lN1c
    part 2
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5l1sbMnjKmw
    part 3
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6laRr53ohSk

i used nitromors to strip the old lacquer off because i dont know what yer man is using in the video
i also decided i liked the look and colour of the tru oil on the wood so i went with that but each there own and wood stain available in any hardware shops would do for staining to a different colour i think the old stock colour was walnut but cant be 100% sure
i only put the last 3 coats over the checkering so as not to clog it up
and polished it off with 2 coats of carnauba car wax again not touching the checkering so as not to clog it up
all in all it took me about a week to complete but its not hard if you take your time
