Depends where he went in Ireland

I know for certain he was not whacked, he went into witness protection and is working in our local chipper, he works the same shifts as Elvis, it was Elvis he told me.:D

Of course not. The final scene showed that his life continued but with a heavy air of paranoia over it.

I've never watched The Sopranos but just bought the box-set. I don't think I want to watch it now...

That's what I used to think, but I remember reading somewhere that the director came out and suggested the opposite.

No, the final scene hinted that he was killed, it just didn't show it.

Allusion to The Godfather murder scene in the restaurant
Meadow makes 3 attempts before successfully parking - 2 unsuccessful attempts made on Tony's life thus far
Eating onion rings like communion wafers - last supper
    etc..

    It doesn't matter.
The point is Tony is going to be looking over his shoulder for the rest of his life.
Anyone who looks out of place could be a potential assassin.
This is the life he chose.

He's taking over the esplanade project.
He's hit by the guy in the Members Only jacket at the bar. They make a point to show him repeatedly glancing over at Tony, and then walking to the bathroom behind.

"At the end, you probably don't hear anything, everything just goes black" - Bobby

    He was killed.
    In depth analysis

He's taking over the esplanade project.
For me, the ending (and other clues in that episode and the conversation between himself and Bobby) suggested he was whacked but they just wanted to keep it open for a future film or series and also to mess with people's heads.

It was a brilliant and subversive ending. I was one of the idiots that was getting up to check the Sky box thinking it was on the blink when
    the screen went black.

Yeah, I love when someone interprets a piece of work and then sticks blindly to their interpretation even after the author comes out and says something different. What does he know, he only wrote it?

He's taking over the esplanade project.
He died. This was pretty much confirmed by the writer
In the final scene, everytime we hear the bell on the door, we see Tony look at the door and then we see from his point of view who is coming in. The last time, we hear the door and where we would expect to once again see from Tony's point of view is just blackness. The suspicious guy that went into the bathroom shot him on the way out and he is dead.

Dead I reckon.. The Bobby quote on page1 is pretty good and I hadn't thought about it.
Just finished it last week. The best of many great shows.

    The ginger cat has significance.
When Christopher dies a ginger cat is seen staring at a picture of him in Tony's office / store. This is meant to symbolise Adriana who was obviously earlier "whacked" herself.

Above Tony's head in the restaurant is a picture of a tiger (or a big ginger cat!) and represents Adriana's almost karmic influence over Tony's death

Can you even sympathise with the character though ?

He was a scumbag, and in the end he could have got his comeuppance.
