Minimum Alcohol pricing

Just a quick question. Since the gov wanted minimum pricing on alcohol, prices have been going up weekly in our local Tesco. Is there a new tax? were is this money going ? please don't say just to the supermarkets.

I used to drink Tuborg up until a month ago and that used to be €6 for 6 cans, now it is €8.75, insane for that cheap made drink. It's dearer than budweiser even. The money is going to the greedy producers of the alcoholic beverage.

I think drink companies want higher profits since the economy isn't as ****ed as it used to be, but still is pretty ****. Like superquinn no longer stocks the bargain €5 wines as they said its customers wanted higher quality €8-10 wines.

I kinda have gone off pissy beer at a stupid price. €1,90 for a can a beer that is barely drinkable or €1,25 for a can of eastern European beer that isn't drinkable, but at least it's cheap

hmmm so no extra tax that at least could help the hospitals ? what's the point then. Thought putting up the price was under the guise of being good for you

Aldi have the best drink they do a lovely bottle of red/white/rose wine for 3.99 with no added pretentious ****e

the pear cider is nice too

Tesco can go f uck them selves with their price rises only then to pretend they have a "sale" when they have been ripping us of all along

They put the price up originally to stop young people purchasing it, but we all know that was a lie.

I think they're going for "the good for you by being more expensive so people should be buying less, but really, some people are probably just going to buy their kids less food instead and we'll ignore that instead of doing some actually effective" approach.

Having a minimum alcohol is not going to mean that people will drink less. that's like saying the people in Dublin would drink less than the rest of the country because it costs more in general to drink in Pub's in Dublin.



I know some pub in Dublin are cheap like Dicey's

What gets me is every month or so you see a deal say in Tuborg for 6 for €7 and the following week they up the price to €8.75 lol thinking people will still purchase it at that price.

It's the same with all cans of beer. Well Tuborg just lost another customer as i won't pay that price and most folk won't either, this is what greed does to them

However, Tesco drove me to Aldi, where I see considerably more stable pricing.

As already posted the Tesco prices I can concur. Now you might or might not like Aldi's beer, Galahad is just under €20 a slab.

I used to drink Tuborg from Tesco at exactly €20 a slab but left when it then to €30

And we are all being hoodwinked as my wife got Heineken from our local pub off license for a €1 a can last weekend.

That effectively means that Aldi are charging a premium for "cheap" beer, given that I think everyone would consider Heineken a premium product and your local bar should be the MOST expensive ~ it's a question, so it hangs there.

Have to say I was home recently and FFS, the price of drink is astranomical.

I have to say when it comes to pubs, where I live (the netherlands) it's pretty much like for like, maybe in some places a bit more expensive in Irl...

But off license drink is a rip off. I can get a crate of beer (24 bottles) for between 5-13 euro depending on the brand, and the 5euro stuff is still good stuff. I bought a box of 20 Bavaria (which is make locally for me) in Tesco and it cost me 13 euro, here a crate of 24 costs me 8euro.

Now granted we have to pay what is know as Statie Geld, but that's deposit money on the crate it amounts to 3.90euro, and you get that back when you bring the bottle and crate back so you have the statie geld for your next crate.

EDIT: I should also say, that in Lidl, the 6 pack of Perlenbacher (nice beer) in Irl is 6.99 here it's 3.95

Dicey's in Dublin sell's bottle and pints for €2 on Sunday night even Desperados for that price, you pay that in Tesco for Desperados on offer. If one pub in Dublin can charge this price for pints and Bottle why the hell do most charge 2.5 times that or more.

My local sells a pint of tuborg for 2.70! Tesco were nearly selling drink at wholesale prices for a while even if they made 5c on a can with so many stores they'd still make a good profit

seems the cheepo larger/beers are now becoming more expensive than the so called premium ones. I remember when Huzzar came out it used to be the cheapest vodka you could get now it’s similar in price to Smirnoff

Prices in Tesco have been ridiculous for the past few months. This time last year their world beers were 5 for €10. A couple if months later the same beers were 4 for €11 and since March they've been 3 for €7.

The price of cans have had similar increases. 4 cans of Miller were €5 for a long time and now they're up at €2 a can.

Alcohol in Ireland is cheaper than it has ever been.
Ten years ago it was €2+ for a can of any half decent beer with the cheap options being six dutch gold for £5.

Now you can regularly get a crate of Carlsberg etc for €1 a can and can get various other six packs for 6-7 quid. How much bloody cheaper do you want it? 50c a can? 25c a can?

And this is without even talking about the selection of decent craft beers available at reasonable prices in various places nowadays

We have high excise rates.

We have a relatively high cost of living.

Try visiting Scandinavia if you want to see expensive alcohol prices.

Bud, Heiniken, Carlsberg, Stella, Amstell, etc etc etc, they all cost about the same as Tuborg or Dutch Gold or Hackenburg, sweet f*ck all, to produce.

The only reason you'd pay more for budwiser than you would for Tuborg is because a lot of advertising is spent on budwiser telling you it's a quality product.


Reality is, they are all ****e beers made from the cheapest ingredients that Diageo/inbev/western/molson-coors and the rest can find and pumped out at massive volumes, sold ad stupidly high prices and designed to get idiots hammered.

Rather than change their business models and adapt to a changing market the VFI feel like the rest of the country owes them something and should subsidise their lack of business skills.

But the barley he is talking about is contract grown for use in animal feeds, not for beer.

Diageo and Heiniken do pay **** all for their barley though, they have exclusive contracts with farms so that they can only seel their grains to them.

Ah yeah, but I can imagine it wouldn't be great. Astra have promotions here every so often, especially around football tournaments. Usually you could get an 8-pack for €2. But I would rather throw an extra 1 or 2 €'s for something I like drinking and not the bud, heineken, tuborg type beers that are bland and tasteless.

I live in the UK and I can't seem to find 6 packs here, only 4 packs, quite annoying.

I hope they bring that bottle deposit here. Bottles left on the beach,in the parks and ditches. If the lowts who leave the bottles lying around won't go get their money back,I will gladly bring them in and claim the money.
