Put up the umbrella, here comes the rain on parade day.

My guess is that's a rabbit in a freezer in a pet store destined to feed snakes.

Everyone starts thinking, rabbits = €€€€€€€€€€€€€€€€€€€€€€€€€€€€

    They don't.

    Why not?

You can't certify them disease free if you catch them by other means than shooting. If you do shoot them, they won't take them cos you can't guarantee they're lead/copper free.

Pet stores in Ireland get their rabbits from the UK where they're bred and certified specifically for that market.

    Why?

Look up the price of snakes, would you want to be responsible after getting €10 for the rabbit that killed one?

Back in the 90's I sold rabbit at £0.50 a head to a Dublin city butcher, it used to pay for my .22 ammo:). He sold them on to his older clients, rabbit was very popular in Dublin back in the day. After a few years the market dried up (regulations and lack of demand).

In the 00's rabbit became very popular in the upper market restaurants, this was when the price of prime meats began to go up and everyone was looking to turn a good profit.
We started buying whole rabbit carcass for €5-6 a unit and by the time the rage was coming to an end they where at €12 a head.

Just shows you what marketing and demand can do for a commodity:rolleyes:.

That's not destined for any snake. Rabbits sold for snake or lizard food is not wild rabbit nor is it skinned.
Majority of rabbits and rats for sale for snake food are calcium powdered and with head and fur attached. Makes it easier for the calcium powder to stay on the rabbit.

Your guess would be wrong then.

$20 sounds about right for a wild rabbit from the butcher, due to the mark up.
A wild rabbit in the supermarket is $15. It's is a bit of a niche product. Definitely seen as gourmet so its gonna cost more than regular meats. http://www2.woolworthsonline.com.au/Shop/ProductDetails?Stockcode=705161&name=macro-meats-rabbit-wild

But I think people need to understand that its a different currency and economy. Meat is more expensive in terms of $/kg in Oz.
For example, that rabbit above works out at $19.50/kg. A similar sized pre-pack of chicken breast is $15.50/kg. (sold loose its less, but the rabbit is prepacked ;) )
So thats about 25% more for rabbit. Probably doesn't sound as astronomical when you look at it like that.

A butcher in limerick was selling them over the counter for €12 a pop, very popular with older generation he told me when I strolled in ,anyway, i struck up a chat, he was so wary I was starting to laugh, once he knew I wasn't from any government dept he was grand, I told him I had plenty of rabbits and asked would he buy a few.He said if they were head shot and skinned he would give me €5 a rabbit and buy a half dozen at a time.
Took him in a good few over 12 months, but he hasn't rang me in a while so someone must have under cut me!! :-)
He is still selling them last time I was in the city I saw them on display.
