Huge power, relative economy, comfort, relative reliability, handeling, gagets we need, and safety unfortunately are not compatible with the old ways. Nostalgia of older cars often makes you forget their problems and just how much better the average modern car is. I have driven a e30 m3 and its fun, but only in small doses.

Nonsense; with the possible exception of economy, which I couldn't give a toss about anyway. I've owned 2 old beamers and still drive one, and they've all had ample power (huge in one case), plenty of comfort, great reliability, great or good handling (the e38 was a tad wallowy to be fair, but what barge isn't?), loads of useful gadgets, and I'd be very comfortable with the odds of coming out better than an NCAP-rated econobox, which would account for a stupid percentage of Irish cars.

My current car isn't a beamer, it's a 1996 Volvo 850R. It has electric windows, mirrors, sunroof, electric heated seats, 8 speaker sound, ABS, traction control, fold-flat seats, an enormous luggage compartment, a towbar and roof bars because I can, and again, I feel pretty safe in it; safe enough to stick my two smallies in the back. (And their buggy, changing bags, kitchen sink, dog, surfboard, etc.) I haven't had any major problems with it in a year, it's dead easy to work on, it only cost two grand, and it goes like stink.

I'd like an E61 M5 please (my Volvo may be blown, but it'll be a long time before there'll be a blown beamer in my driveway, particularly one that's acoustically adjusted) but I'll keep the 855 for Monday to Friday, thanks all the same. Add in the 750iL I crave, and I'm not sure how much time that modern V10 would get on the road. And I'm terrified of iDrive....
