I studied gamekeeping at sparsholt college in england and as part of the course did the "deer stalking certificate level one". I've now moved back to Ireland and was wondering if this qualification counts for anything over here or will i need to do the Irish equivalent.
    Thanks

The only mandatory course is the Hcap and that is only if you are shooting on Coilte land. Other than that you do not need a course for private land.

I've been hearing that diddy for years now. Every year it was the next year.

Coilte demand the Hcap, but it is not necessary for private permissions. I'd like to see them try impose it.

Firstly the Government would have to impose such a law/SI to make it mandatory for everyone seeking a deer license to have a Hcap. Then the NPWS would be charged with making sure a course is put in place that covers all aspects. Then find relevant bodies/groups, organisations, etc to run them. Then increase the number of rangers to make sure everyone shooting deer has the course which means they are not only looking for poachers, but previously legal shooters.

I don't doubt that some such stupid law would be implemented without consultation, but i doubt it for now.

So if you're only going to shoot on private land all you need to apply for a deer calibre is landowners permission? can deer calibre's be used for fox control aswell or is it specified on the licence that it can only be used for deer.

When you apply for a license always tick all the boxes. So target, hunting, etc. You must have the necessary membership to prove you are a member of a target range, and the permissions for land for the deer.

This way you are more than covered for using the rifle for dual/multiple purposes. In the off season you can hunt foxes and do target shooting.
