I'm quite devastated by this news...
With Community all over the shop this year, Parks & Rec was my rock... I don't want anyone to leave... Wonder if they'll replace them with new characters or just give more airtime to the rest...
I hope they get a decent send off at least...

This is LITERA... ah it's been done...
That's sucky news to wake up to though: I'm going to go ahead and guess that when Anne's baby pops, herself & Chris will simply leave Pawnee to take care of the kid.

While Rob Lowe disappearing is a definite minus point - though Chris was a one-note character he was an awesome one-note character - I'm in a bind about Rashida Jones leaving: on the one hand Anne was intentionally the straight-man amongst the chaos & as such was something of a character vacuum (I always figured the baby plotline was a desperate attempt to give Anne something, anything, to do). On the other hand, I did enjoying looking at Jones, Leslie's "beautiful tropical fish" :D

I love this show more and more with every season that passes, I will also be sad to see Rob and Rashida go, but tbh this show has such a vast array of fantastic characters, there is literally not one I don't like that I think it will do just fine.

Even Mona-Lisa Ralphio? She is the one character I would love to see the back of.

Okay yes I will give you that one.

Rashida Jones has had almost nothing to do on P&R for the last two or three seasons, they've just been manufacturing ways to keep her in there. Can't say I'm too bothered about Rob Lowe going either, he got some laughs but was repetitive.

Now if Nick Offerman was to leave, thereby depriving us of the Greatest Character in TV History, then there'd be trouble...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 14,748 ✭✭✭✭Lovely Bloke

Now if Nick Offerman was to leave.

Don't ever say that again. Ever.

I'd watch that show if it was JUST Ron Swanson.

I don't mind Lowe and Jones leaving, because they weren't essential to the laughs. Sure, they got them when they were on screen, but the rest of the characters (yes, even Mona-Lisa and Jean!) are enough by themselves, so their presence won't be missed as such.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,990 ✭✭✭squonk

It's a real pity they're going. I know Ann was just holding up the scenery for a very long time but it was nice having her there. Initially when Chris and Ben came onboard I wasn't mad about the pair of them. It thought the show was better without them but after a few episodes I really warmed to Chris and while you know what to expect from him, it's still great to see him on screen. I'll miss him. I'd prefer if Ben left tbh. Not that that's going to happen now of course.

When P&R goes to the great cancellation vault in the sky, I really hope there'll be plans in the works for a Ron Swanson spin off!

I think people are underestimating the importance of Rashida Jones character and the imortsnce of the "straight man' in general. You could argue that Adam Scott will provide that but I'm not so sure. who will Leslie play off of now?

Rob Lowe on the other hand will be no great loss imo. He was only meant to be a guest star initally and that's the way it should have stayed. He's a one trick pony if ever there was one.

I'm surprised people are suggesting thst this show is getting better and better. I thought last season was bit stale tbh. Still funny and charming but seemed to be stuck in a bit of a creative rut. It needs a bit of a shake up in the main cast imo. Andy and April haven't been interesting or funny for over a season. The only thing reslly worth exploring now is Ron's family life but the casting new for the new season doesn't suggest that's likely.

It's been the best comedy of the last 3 or 4 years but I wonder if it's coming to it's natural conclusion. The Office (US) and 30 Rock both started to deteriorate in quality around this stage of the show and I fear P&R will follow suit.

just finished blowing through this the last few weeks, some great stuff in there, i heard about jones and lowe leaving when i was about halfway through season 3, and with that in mind i kinda payed a little more attention to them, and being honest if they can expand the other cast members a bit more they may not be a great loss, you also have rons baby, which will probably bring his girlfriend into it a bit more, and you have the rival business to rent a swag, and also april probably going to veterinary school, although with the other 2 leaving that might get scrapped, or maybe she goes till they leave and shell be back running animal control again,

anyway im looking forward to its return already :)

There's a trailer out for season 6 (region blocked for now but I imagine it'll pop up elsewhere soon) and ... wait for it ... the department is going to London  That tired, dilapidated cliché has been hauled out of storage once more. Don't get me wrong, Parks & Rec. was hardly genre busting in the first instance, but it's disappointing to see they're pulling the "cast go to Europe, cultural shenanigans ensue" schtick. I feel Poulter & co. are better than that...

Just watched season openers. Great Ron Swanson episodes. Good Andy scenes with Peter Sefanowisz (sp?).

That was a pretty excellent opening. Absolutely loved Ron at the end, reciting the poem. On paper, it sounds cheesy as hell, but it just worked so brilliantly.

Jean Ralphio stole the show for me in the season opener, he even took the limelight away from the Fonz. Such a brilliant character.

Amazing the nuances in Ben Schwarz's acting that make JR a likeable tool and his character in House of Lies such a monumental asshole despite them being so similar.

Ha, it's been pretty good so far, though Andy's disappearance (to cater for Chris Pratt's film commitments) was a touch too glib. The London episode wasn't as cringe-worthy as I feared it might be & the coda with Ron at the distillery was nice - Parks & Rec tends to straddle the line between sweet & cloying very skilfully.

I will be honest though; sometimes the use of all those Pawnee / Eagleton caricatures makes it hard to believe that someone like Leslie would want to stick around & help any of them. She's kinda wasted on those goons :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 44,200 ✭✭✭✭Basq

Wasn't a huge fan of the recent Pawnee Vs Eagleton episode..

.. but Nick Offerman continues to knock it out of the park!

Travelling around the US at the moment and picked up 2 Ron Swanson t-shirts in the NBC store in NY a couple of weeks ago... Been getting so many high fives, thumbs up, compliments and even discounts when I wear them... So much win...
Loving that it's back... It's unfortunate about the lack of Andy at the moment, but I think they're giving us more Ron to make up for it...

Hey, do you think they have a deal with Microsoft on this show? The number of blatant shots of Windows 8 screens is pretty nuts.

Loved alternate-universe Ron (the casting of Sam Elliott was inspired)
Also, Leslie's conflicted facial expressions as she deals with Anne's announcement of leaving, combined with the plate of waffles in front of her :D

Are you referring to the nurse? I wouldn't say she's the "New Anne". Tom's had girls pop up in the past, which only last a few episodes. She's meant to be leaving in about 2 weeks anyways.

I'm not sure why but after years of loving this show it has gone off the boil for me. I think it had a bit more spark before they all paired off. There's something very dull about Lesley and Ben as a couple particularly.

Did they even have a scene together this episode?

Good episode i thought. Ron was great once again. "A joke is another word for a lie, I don't lie therefore I don't joke":D

I haven't seen this ep yet.

As far as the relationships go I suppose I'm getting tired of it being entirely about the political future of pawnee. Sure its funny at times but it gets a bit hard to care. I think the characters need a bit more of something personal going on.I need to be rooting for something other than leslie's career and the future of Pawnee.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,159 ✭✭✭✭phasers

Everyone in Pawnee is a total jerk and I'm getting really sick of the town. I miss Andy.

I don't think Leslie has been as funny this season, she's just been frustrated a lot which is kind of depressing me.

I don't like Ron with a wife and kids, although I did like their wedding when she said her middle name was Tammy :D

So far this season hasn't been great, but I still love all the characters and hope it picks up a bit soon. I'm looking forward to more from Jean-Ralphio's family!

The lack of Andy is just bringing me down I think...

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 36,711 CMod ✭✭✭✭pixelburp

Yeah, I think Pawnee itself is becoming this show's biggest weakness in many respects. For the most part, the broad strokes that its population was painted with were broadly amusing; you could generally see why Leslie was so keen to work for this town, despite peoples' obvious buffoonery and narrow-mindedness.

This gag though has become incredibly overused, a crutch for the writers to fall on - oh isn't smalltown America so crazy?? - to the point where Pawnee now feels like a horrendous town to live, with the Parks & Rec department the only place of sanity in this hell on earth. In particular, Councilman Jamm was funny at first, but the writers decision to jettison any subtly with that character, with his constant public announcements at how he was wasting everyone's time, just made the joke far too on the nose.

Leslie's rant at the start of the season hasn't gone away, it's still looming over her character, and I wonder if this is going to be part of her own arc; that she follows Anne/Chris and leaves Pawnee. It feels like she's losing the faith a little, and it'd be terribly depressing if a show that for the longest time championed the idea of positivity and community spirit, ended with its main flame of hope snuffed out by Pawnee's petty caricatures. It'd be bold to finish the series with a "can't win, give up" message, but it feels like it's heading in that direction.

    Probably.

It just sucks more that they are doing this to a show that, as far as I'm aware, has received critical success, for a show that has seemingly been panned?

If this is the end, they better let the runners and writers finish the show the way it deserves. Lots of happy endings and Leslie Knope for President in a coup.

Cancelling a show because it won't grow its audience to then make a new one with an even narrower appeal?

    I've heard worse ideas :D

people would wanna relax, its the end of october, realistically only 4-5 more episodes would air between now and chirstmass anyway, they are gonna air 4 episodes between now and then, its just their planning on airing them as double episodes over 2 weeks instead of 4 episodes over 4 weeks, and generally most shows take a break at the end of november start of december anyway, and then the show will return in january or february doing it normal thing,

from what little ive read it seems NBC want some new show Shaun Saves the World to take off in the ratings, moving Parks wont help a a **** show succeed so the sooner that show bites the bullet the more likelier that parks gets its deserved renewal :)

The show isn't in any danger right now. For the moment it's more likely to be renewed for another season than cancelled. It's only being moved around on the schedule at the moment, because NBC have nothing to pair it with until Community comes back in January, so double episodes until then just works logistically.

My Speculation (which has been pretty spot on in regards to NBC for the last couple of years): right at the moment for either Parks & Recreation or Community to be cancelled by the end of the season, Michael J Fox Show and Sean Saves The World needs to see a substantial increase in ratings, which I don't see happening anytime soon. So one of Parks & Rec and Community should get a full season order in May and the other will get a 13 episode order and be held on the bench until the first of next year's new comedies fails. Because The Office and 30 Rock ended last year, NBC are sorta screwed with returning comedies and I don't think they've got the balls to cancel all of their comedies this season and start from scratch next year like ABC did in 2009.

Its just such a high quality show. Some of the gags are so sharp and quick that you can miss them at times. It saddens me that awful shows like Sean saves the world, Mom, Dads etc get higher ratings. Ron Swanson is one of the best sitcom characters of the last 10 years.
