I've never understood some people's fascination with The Smiths, however I have detected some some sort of common indeterminable quality in those who are fascinated by The Smiths. I ask you fellow boards registered users to help ascertain this quality or qualities these individuals possess assuming it's not a figment of my imagination.

    You've detected a ghost!

But yeah, let's go in-depth into why people like the music they do.

Whooah slow down sunshine, we're looking for common qualities, not why they like the smiths.

I can't understand why people would stand in a field to watch Mumford & Sons or The Killers, but there ya go.

If it's indeterminable then how are we supposed to determine what it is? If and when we determine it, will anyone aside from you care? I'm not sure this is worthwhile OP.

Eh, maybe because they were very good and have a unique sound? Miles better than a lot of the cookie cutter rubbish that passes for music these days. The Smiths, The Cure and Joy Division EPIC.

Pretentious tripe imo, but I couldn't give a ****e if other people like them. **** knows the majority disagree with my musical preferences.

They are definitely a guilty pleasure of mine.

Myself and Morrissey would be the complete polar opposites in regard to beliefs.

I saw the Smiths play the SFX Hall in 1984 , great night out , lots of drunk happy people as I recall.

All music goes stale after a while though. Wish was my favorite album but it just sounds so dated now. Hated Wild Mood Swings when it was released but have recently found myself listening to that. I thought I'd never get tired of listening to the house music that was big around the mid noughties but that's starting to sound old too.

No point posting & slagging of a band when you don't even reveal your musical favourites. Put up or shut up & put your tastes up for consideration!!!

The Smiths aren't the greatest group of all time but they are somewhere near the very best, I would struggle to name 20 bands who are better!!! IMO! :pac:

Music is all about personal taste. Criticising people for their music taste is soooo gap year.

Why would that matter though? Why would it make them a guilty pleasure? You don't have like musicians personally to like their music.

I think they're great but it's dangerous to get overly obsessed with them. A friend of mine is also into those old 80s rockbands, like The Jam and The Smiths. It's a bit sad really. He's got two kids but he still acts and dresses like a teenager even though he's well into his 40s and grey as a mule. White Adidas Superstar trainers or Doc Martens, Beatle haircut with that weird thing where you grow it down on the sides to look like you have sideburns, mouldy green parka jacket, affected Manchester accent...

It's a bit of a joke when he meets up with his friends at the Free State Soccer League matches and they're all dressed the same, like none of them have moved on since their version of the 80s. Honestly, it looks like a Hallowe'en party.

I was looking for a job and then i found a job...and heaven knows I'm miserable now.

anyone who can write the above lyrics is alright by me.

added to that the sublime guitar of johnny marr, the vastly underrated bass of andy rourke and the unpretentious drums of mike joyce and you've got yourself some high grade tunes.

I never got it. Morrissey makes me want to weep and I don't get why people always talk about Johnny Marr in guitar circles.
Not slagging or anything I just never got it.

Do you mean the Smiths of Ventry Road, Bandon, Co Cork OP? I hate those c**ts personally.

Morrissey is undoubtedly a bit of a ****, but he can certainly write songs. Johnny Marr is an excellent guitar player in my opinion. He's done a lot since leaving The Smiths.

They're a decent band, very good lyrics and alright to listen to now and again. Morrissey being such a massive cúnt though manages to balance it all out nicely.

Some young people are so conservative and looking a "bit of a joke" isn't limited to eighties casualties.
