Expensive outcome for the claimant. Right decision though I think.

'Ciara O'Connell, 33, a sales representative, was dancing backwards to a Shakira song with a male work colleague'

    Sounds like my kinda place.

Great result and a sensible judge for a change. There was a time when cases like that meant an automatic payout. Will see ever pay the costs though? I seriously doubt it.

Why is THIS case being reported in the news, and not the hundreds / thousands of other litigation cases? It's not for huge money, it's not about "celebrities" suing or being sued.

Could it be something to do with the slightly sexual overtone of "Copperface Jacks"?

Very strange choice of news by the national broadcaster . . .

Of course she will, solicitors are experts at "retrieving" their fees from people. If she doesn't pay she'll find herself back in court soon enough.

Ah, too bad. If the floor had made her fall when she was dancing forwards she could be booking a holiday now.

Because, a bit like After Hours at times, our national broadcaster is a wee bit Dublincentric.

Not only a hugely mistake on her part but a hugely embarrassing one too with her name all over the news. Sucks for her..

I wonder how long it'll be before people start witch-hunting & linking to her Facebook account.

It could be seen as a very important case in future in compo cases. It's not the facts that are the most important thing but the principle.

Serious question, What happens if she does not have the money to pay the costs ? Do they check you financially before you are allowed pursue the case ?

My favourite quotes from the article:
Ms O'Connell and Mr Humphries were engaged in modern dancing "of the kind that takes place in night clubs and which is not easy to describe in terms that make sense".
The defendant denied liability and also claimed Ms O'Connell was engaged in dangerous and reckless dancing with Mr Humphries.

In some cases, you can be ordered to post a bond to cover some/all of the defence costs. It'd need to be a fairly no hope case as most recent attempts I've read of by a defendant to stymie a case using this tactic have failed.

Maybe because its allegedly one of the leading nightclubs in the country

THE COMPANY which operates popular Dublin nightspot Copper Face Jack’s has recorded another bumper year, turning an after-tax profit of over €5.6 million for the twelve months ending in January 2012.

Again, I blame whatever solicitor encouraged her and didn't run her from the office the first time she came in.
    All about the money.

Can't link the tv3 website but they said she'll have to pay near 100,000, seems excessive.

But this case was on the airwaves long before the verdict was known. If she had been awarded compensation there would be nothing new in that . . plenty of people sue and receive compensation in circumstances which are questionable. I'm fairly sure it's the reference to "Swayze"-style dancing, and the sexual overtone of "Copperface Jacks" establishment which made it 'newsworthy'.

We are being fed crap to keep us entertained.

If you go to Coppers sober and stand at the edge of the dance floor it is similar to standing outside an ice rink populated by buffalo.

It's newsworthy because the country is full of idiots and this is the type of story that keeps them chattering away while ignoring the important stuff.

Ended up on the broad of me back and bruised all over.I went down the next day to apologise, being a country pub they said "ah would you ever **** off you stupid hood!" Maybe this thing of suing for falling when there's drink on ye is a city thing

I suppose its true. Political central and all that. But a daft auld nightclub story that could happen anywhere shouldn't really be national news.
