Average putts per round...???

I am really struggling at the moment trying to play to my handicap (11) and again today shot a 92 gross in the Intermediate Scratch Cup at Muskerry G.C. Although my overall game is poor enough at the moment I counted up my putts and had 38 today for 17 holes as I chipped in on one. Basically I am averaging somewhere around 2.25 putts per hole at this rate which seems awful. What should an 'average Joe' be striving for as I am sure this is the single biggest problem with my game. The frustration is mounting following last Saturday's 96 in Tralee and Thursday's 95 at East Cork........again on both days putting was the major issue..!!, is it time for a change of putter, length of putter, grip, lesson, etc. or all of the above. Or is it simply that my confidence is so shook and if so how do you repair this?

Well its hard to actually tell if its all down to putting but you should be averaging around 30 putts per round and at worst 32.

You should buy a putting mat to practice 6' putts at home. Watch some putting tips on youtube or wherever you can find them. I always thought that Dave Peltz was great and really helpful and Tina Mickelson is pretty good too.

Go through their lessons and if that doesn't work then have a look at your putting grip.

I average 1.84 putts per hole, I enter all my cards into golfshot which is great for keeping track of stats. Remember if you putt from the fringe that doesn't count as a putt it's an approach shot.

Putting is a funny stat. If you are hitting 18 greens per round but more than 20 feet from the hole then 36 putts per round is great and better than PGA tour average. Putts per GIR or putts from certain distances are better stats to keep.

I average 33 putts so far this year. What seems to happen to me is when every think else is going well the putter lets me down.
    Eg last 2 rounds

    83 strokes with 32 putts
    85 strokes with 38 putts

Have to learn not to aim outside the hole for those 3 to 4 footers

Here's your brother. I'm averageing 36 putts per round. I hit driver, hybrid, hybrid into a gale today to reach a Par 5 in 3 and walked off with a 7. May start practicing at home on the carpet simple as that.

For comparison, I have the same handicap as yourself - my putting average is 1.81 per hole.

My average this year is 35, my target is 31. My handicap is 8. I would love to see others average putts, expected putts and handicap. It is a game within a game.

I'm 1.88 per hole and 2.04 per GIR off 8.

1.84 per hole and 2.0 per GIR off 14

1.90 putts per round and 2.00 putts per GIR off 7.

Really struggle at times, have good days and bad days, try and tell myself before every round that I'll have no 3 putts today, have gained a lot of confidence using a Super Stroke grip from about 10 feet and in.

1.66 per hole, 1.90 per gir, hc 4

Anything below 2 per GIR is good. For me, any round below 33 putts is decent as i do hit a lot of greens, my irons being the strongest part of my game. Actually puts an amount of pressure on my long putts, which sometimes results in a nasty 3 stab as a consequence. Long game generally remains pretty constant, difference between good scores and poor scores is all around the green. Off 9 at the moment. Would love to have my time back as a junior again, I'd spend almost all of it around the green :D

I used to use statdoctor before I started using GolfShot Lite. It was very good mainly because it compared your stats to a "bogey" golfer which I assume is 18 and a scratch golfer.

Anyway, for putting they reckon you should be looking at:

    0 handicap = 29.88 putts per round
    18 handicap = 33.84 putts per round

They also have similar grading for other stats and I have attached the screenshot.

I am not affiliated with statdoctor, just thought it was a practical guide over time.

How do you lads manage to keep track of putts per round? How is GIR calculated? Surely that's not 2 shots to get onto the green given 3.9 shots per hole would leave you with a score of 70 or so per round? Not questioning your numbers just how you keep track of them!

I personally use golfshot to track all my stats, which gives you putts per round and putts per GIR. All averages.

Many of us use something like this http://golfshot.com/ to keep a record LB.

GIR is hitting the green in 1 (Par 3), 2 (Par 4), 3 (Par 5).
Having an average of 2.0 putts for a GIR means that someone is getting a Par on every hole (on average) where they hit a GIR.
If Yaya hit all GIR's then he would be shooting Par.
He isn't hitting all GIR's though (he mustn't be that good at all :D), the best GIR stat on the PGA tour is 73%.

He's playing off 7 so he isn't a million miles from going around in par, where he is gaining the 7 shots is in the holes that he doesn't hit a GIR.

It's more likely that your putting numbers will be better for non GIR's as you are taking an extra shot to get onto the green... this extra shot will in most cases be taken from closer to the green so, in theory, you should be getting it closer to the hole and take less putts as a result.

I don't know all Yaya's stats but this may look like one of his rounds
9 GIR's and 2.0 putts per GIR = Level Par for 9 holes
9 Non GIR's and 1.8 putts per non GIR = 7.2 over for 9 holes... 9 holes multiplied by the additional 0.8 he is taken above par.
(Over the course of that round, his average putt would be 1.9 as he stated)

A lot of assumptions there but hope it gives you a feel/understanding of how it works.

I had 38 putts in my last round - just counted them up there - so an average of 2.1111 which isn't great. That included a single putt for birdie from about two feet (Unfortunately, I wasn't in the twos that day!).

My problem is just not putting the ball up to the hole. Its something I really, really need to work on. Especially with the Heritage coming up!!!!

Man, I wish I'd never opened this thread :o

I don't log every single round on GolfShot but going back over the last 20 rounds or so that I have logged, I've averaging exactly 2.2 putts per GIR... an astonishing amount of three-putts (and one four-putt!) in there...

For us average Joes though thats expected.
When we are hitting GIR typically we are miles away.
The lower PPR comes from the fact that we miss greens and then chip and putt.

Very true, I must admit though, I always feel extra pressure when putting after hitting a GIR... give me a 30-foot Par putt and I'll likely two-putt for a steady bogey more often than not... but a 30-foot birdie putt seems to bring the Golfing Pansy out in me!

Just delved a little deeper into my GolfShot stats actually (the boss aint here)... for my last 20 rounds, my putts per GIR is 2.3, but for the last five it's exactly 2.0 so that's a good sign, I guess... hitting some red-hot form on the greens! :D

I also hit over 26% of greens which, for a career mid-handicapper is decent, right, one-in-four? Just shows, it's the short game that's holding me back...

Or you could look at it another way and say that you're due to average 2.6 over the next 5 rounds :)
