Hi, how's the telly? And what's the finall postage costs? Thx, Arthur

I finally managed to get my dirty paws on this telly.

First impressions: The box is huge. It's almost as tall as the wife on it's side (the box, not the wife, hope she doesn't see this now..). Box is incredibly thin, so is the TV inside when it came out. It still felt nice and solid, no flex or anything. It's white. Err.. hmm. It's obviously white. However, once set up, it's barely noticeable. The white bezel is only 5mm or so, and I am going to wall mount is, so no stand either. Even if I were to leave it on the the stand as I have set it up now, it should be fine as I already got used to it in first 10 mins, so it wouldn't bother me the least. What would bother me is the remote - that is also white! It feels a cheap-ish, but then again it probably will never get used once I figure out what Sky button does what for the TV, and then there's the Android app remote etc too.

As soon as booted up (see.. smart tv right?), it connected to WIFI straight away, and was downloading software update in minutes. There's a whole bunch of stuff going on at the "Home" - various stuff, premium apps, other apps, app store, this that etc - will take me a while to get used to this.

Connected the antenna, and it straight away auto-tuned up 50 odd channels between DTV and radio. All sorts of stuff like BBC, CH4, RTE One, RTE TWO etc - some HD too, and I have full program guide as well - so I guess it's fair to say that this TV is good for Saorview? Connected Sky, everything normal as expected. I haven't tuned the picture yet, so it looks a bit meh at the moment - also every time I move from a smaller to larger display, I need to get used to the picture as initially everything looks a bit lower def or something.

TV came with 4 Cinema 3D glasses. They are very simple, very plasticky and feels very much like the glasses you get the cinema for a euro or so (didn't try if the work with the TV, will try this weekend). Put one on, and wandered on to the 3D area, and tried the 'Top 5' and the first one was 13 minute clip called 'Insect Talk'. It started off with an annoying animated monkey professor talking and I was absolutely gutted because I couldn't get the monkey in focus properly. I was wondering if the set was broken for a few seconds, but then as I let my brain get fooled by what my eyes are telling it to see.. slowly but surely my brain started accepting things like you can actually see a monkey in professor outfit closer than where the TV is. What sort of black magic is this? Burn it with fire..!! And then slowly but surely it really started working - and WOWZA!! Soon I had a small dog sized bee hovering rather menacingly in the middle of the room half way between me and the telly. I have seen plenty of 3D movies in last couple of years, but I had never ever experience 3D to this level. I am sure the clip I was watching is probably the absolute best of the best of the 3D capabilities this TV can do as it's a deliberate set up to trick your mind into feeling the depth - but wow, what a show it was - soon I had bats chasing moths in slow motion right in front me, right over the rug littered with my daughters toys (Note to self: tidy up..). I am absolutely thrilled with the 3D effects that this telly can do. Sure, such good 3D content is going to be few and far in between, and even these tiny clips off the web is funny because at one stage I had this bee frozen in the middle of my living room while the video buffered in the background. The pleasures of living in the stone ages of Interwebs aka Drogheda. Tried another clip - Kyle's stage performance, and this time however the effect was simply to add depth to the stage, nothing was coming out of the TV, and just as well because it was full of poorly (as in badly AND barely) dressed men thrusting their junk at you. You would think Kyle show would be aimed at men, wouldn't you? Or may be it is.. hmm.. Quickly tried 2D - 3D conversion, and I think it was Hurt Locker on Channel 4, and have to say there was absolutely no effect. I guess it really depends on the content.

Booted up the PS3, and it immediately recognized the new display, and asked what size 3D is it - and the option starts from 71"... scrolling down to 47 was quick but it did hurt.. I quickly launched Super Stardust HD - double tripple WOW. A-M-A-Z-I-N-G! Absolutely mind blown. Incredible depth and incredible graphics - such a fun game! I am really looking forward to trying out 3D with rest of my games collection - sleepless nights ahead!

    Any questions, fire away!

    Oh, and some photos:

Out of the box, on the stand:

    Autotune on antenna:

Future EPG listing - this is complete Saorview feature set right?

Getting HD on antenna - RTE TWO I think it was.

I am yet to try DVB-S2 tuning with the Sky dish. Between that, Saorview, Apps and DVR recording feature of the TV, as soon as I get a better internet connection, I might consider giving Sky the boot - potential saving of €300+ a year.

This set has gone up in price at Amazon.de. It was €649 when I ordered it last Friday, but €699 now I think - worth doublecheking. Amazon.de charged €13.xx delivery to Belfast, and ParcelMotel charged €7 for oversized parcel collection. Total damage of approximately €670 or there abouts.

Great review positron - just to check with the saorview. Were you able to pick up RTE 2 HD , RTE1 +1 through the ariel.

go to youtbe on the lg, search for 3d and check out the guy with the sword. its usually the first one that comes up.

I'll confirm the cinema 3d glasses work perfect with it as theyre the same passive as opposed to the samsung active ones which are a lot more expensive. Mate of mine has the samsung active 3d, I cant tell the difference having watched 3d in both..

Is it just a bog standard aerial for Saorview?

Yes, I think I saw RTE 2 HD there this morning. I'll double check tonight and report back.

This is great, because two of the four glasses LG have included is green and blue or something - a bit too Elton John-ish for my linking. I have a few half-decent looking Real Cinema 3D glasses lying around, and might pick up a few stylish looking ones online some day.

Yes, mines 17 years old. :D

arturcreo, you could probably look into getting the 2013 versions for a little bit more? Not sure what's better, but they are not too much more than 699.

The LG 47LA6608 looks like a good option for an extra €100.

In built Subwoofer and magic remote. Not sure what else is different in the 2013 model for the extra money.

    Hey,

Just as a second confirmation, Parcel Motel have my package ready for collection in the Finglas Depot.

I also got the below respoonse re P&P charges.

    Amazon may package it differently.

Have to say great service from Parcel Motel so far I really cant fault them. If only UPC/Vodafone could delivery this level of service Im be a very happy man:)

    Hi mark

Just had the lads measure that parcel again and it is 14cm x 132x 81cm so 49.89kg unfortunately the €10.50 is correct , so still not sure if <snipped> delivery was packaged differently or measure incorrectly ?

    Regards
    Ruth

KingKong, measurements sounds right - they must have measured mine smaller than what it was - I was expecting to pay €10.50. Wonder if I should drop them a mail to see if they want to correct the measurements and take another €3.50!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 562 ✭✭✭Kingkong

There so sound, I have to say.

Do you have any tips on setup up the TV.

    Cant wait to unbox later:)

Need to downlaod some 3d stuff later too

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,472 ✭✭✭positron

+1 to that. ParcelMotel came back to me saying they won't take any more even if I am offering as it was their own mistake for measuring the parcel wrong.

You're too honest positron. As a small query, on Saorview, can you get MHEG5 aertel pages and did it automatically set up channels in the right order when scanning?

Yes, I can get the aertel pages (like this screen shot online) when I select TEXT while on RTE One.

I am having a bit of bother trying to get the image to look right though - even usually brilliant BBC HD looks a bit off and have already tried the recommended settings off the web, while that greatly improved the picture, something is still not right - for instance I get some grey/bleached/over-exposed type look on the nose/cheeks of people for example. And over all the picture is still a bit too warm as well. I wonder what other's are getting?

Hey Positron what type of remote did ur TV some with. Dont think mine came with those Smart Remotes.

    God, this thing is big:)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,472 ✭✭✭positron

Yep, normal "dumb" remote here too. It's good enough though, especially since you can use your android device as a remote too.

Is that BBC HD through your aerial (presumably picking up Freeview HD from NI) or via the Satellite connection, or via Sky HD box?

If it's BBC HD via the aerial connection (getting Freeview HD from NI), then I suggest trying the Satellite version, as it will have a higher bit-rate than terrestrial signals.

I have tried both antenna and Sky HD box and you are right about more detail on BBC HD thru Sky box. I have different picture settings for both antenna and HDMI1 at the moment, but neither seems to be right - watching alpacas in Peru, alpacas looks bleached white as if they are luminous, and people's faces look ash/washed out. I am crap at explaining this, but its just not right.

Perhaps the contrast levels need to be lowered ?
Some sets have shop display settings and home settings .The shop settings are far brighter and make everything look washed out.

I often find the recommended expert settings can be too bright .
You could also try increasing the gamma settings if that is feasible.

Yes. €719 now. I can't seem to edit the first post - May be someone should mark this as [Expired]?

PS: Going to get in touch with Amazon.de tonight about my TV - everyone still looks like they have a bad tan. :(

    Hey Positron,

I was looking at a thread over on AVForums.com and here are some of settings that one of the forum members uses on his tv.

Could be worth a punt to save you having to send it back.

Also someone else mentioned in the thread a firmware update.

Thanks Jimbob, I am on that avforums thread too (part 2) and have posted a number of video clips of what I am getting despite trying these expert settings. Last night I plugged in my old LG and the difference was day and night - the new set is definitely faulty.

I emailed Amazon.de last night, and they have ordered a new set for me (again to PM). And have asked me to print the return slip and send this TV back within 30 days - but the address to send it to is all the way back to Germany. I am not sure how to go about this / which courier to contact and who pays what etc. I will email them as ask (can't live chat as I don't know German and they refuse to chat in Engerblish)

Quick update: New set arrived from Amazon and as soon as the TV tuned first picture we could see it was normal. People look normal again, blue eyes are blue not bloodshot, while skin is white not badly sun burned, black people look normal unlike miners coming up after a long shift etc etc. This is with standard setting. Once I applied expert settings mentioned earlier to Expert1, everything looks really natural. Really impressed with the picture, and features.

The first set was clearly broken. Amazon want me to send it bad TV all the way back to a Germany, now to find out who can do this for me. An Post perhaps - will try tomorrow.

Do you have to pay this or does Amazon pick up the tab for postage ?

Well, Amazon UK pay for the return to them. I'd fully expect Amazon.de to do likewise.
