Ban unhealthy food for overweight people

At my lunch break I watched a man struggle to get out of his car and wobble into a Deli to get a full fry.

And I thought to myself there's a lad who needs a lot of things but a fry is not one of them. Should we make it illegal to serve overweight people certain food?

The sorts of foods I'm talking about are fizzy drinks, fast foods, junk foods, etc. All the **** you shouldn't eat unless part of a healthy diet.
The cost of Obesity to the state is an estimated 1.16 BILLION! Almost 40 per cent of this was direct healthcare costs and the rest was indirect costs due to loss of productivity, absenteeism and premature mortality.
    Link

We have people on here complaining about dole scroungers, people who add nothing to the economy etc. But what about the people who slowly kill themselves and drain our economy through healthcare and inefficiency?

Some people will call this a implementation of a Nanny state law but so what? If the law forces you to be healthier isn't that a good thing? If the law means you are statistically likely to live longer shouldn't it be praised?

    I'd take this:
It is now an offence under the 2003 Act to supply alcohol to a drunken person and to admit a drunken person to a bar. (A 'drunken person' is someone intoxicated to such a degree that they may endanger themselves or other people). Any licence holder that allows this to occur on their premises is liable on summary conviction to a class B fine for a first offence and a class A fine for any subsequent offence.

and turn it into something like this:
It is now an offence under the 2013 Act to supply Junk food (as specified in appendix XXX) to an overweight person. (A 'Overweight person' is someone who's weight is large enough that they may endanger themselves. Any supplier holder that allows this to occur on their premises is liable on summary conviction to a class B fine for a first offence and a class A fine for any subsequent offence.

Pubs don't breathalyse people to enforce the drink law as it can be clearly visible which obesity is also.

The upshot of the whole thing is that if you live a healthy lifestyle and eat within your daily limits you can break out and enjoy a coke with a Chinese and some Ben and Jerry's afterwards but if you are overweight you don't. If you exercise then you will need to eat more but again if the belly starts to bulge you should be set straight.

I'm sure initial roll out would be painful for some people but the long term benefits would be terrific as the next generation grow up with it in place.

Now don't get me wrong. I was technically obese up until a few months ago and am now only classed as overweight. This is something that I feel could have kept me from getting Obese in the first place, i'm sure I would have hated it if it was brought in while I was obese but it wouldn't ever be an issue if i was never let get obese in the first place.

So.. What do you think? I cant see any reason why somebody would demand being allowed to eat themselves into an overweight state other than people complaining about policing.

And yes I do know that being skinny doesn't mean your healthy but being fat certainly doesn't either and obesity is the major issue. Until we change how we look at food in this country we will never improve the nations eating habits.

We've had our daily abortion thread, our daily dole bashing thread, our daily girl bashing thread, our daily fat people bashing thread... Who wants to do the honours and complete AH's day by making the obligatory traveller bashing thread?

Discretion of the owner of the establishment, same as if you think they are too drunk for more alcohol.

    OP ...why stop there ...

why not ban doctors/nurses/anaesthetists/consultants etc because of all the medical negligence claims against hospitals.

Because that is completely irrelevant to what i am saying.

Some kind of Camp for these people....mmmmmm.

I get what your saying OP.

The people who abuse their own bodies, will then go on to clog the health system when they become unwell.

Remember reading where they've had to make Hospital beds wider and stronger to support obese patients.

    Fat Tax maybe....

you are saying ban fat people from buying fatty foods because obesity costs the state 1.16Billion ...the medical negligence cases before the courts cost hundreds of millions possibly Billions over time ...caused by the previously mentioned docs, nurses etc etc

the state is paying out using our taxes in each case ...so its not completely irrelevant

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,295 ✭✭✭✭Duggy747

What about if they order food online like a pizza, do they provide photo ID or do they hook up a USB weighing scales? :pac:

Applying my logic to your analogy we would ban negligent doctors. not all doctors.

Treat it like the smoking ban.

Fat people have to eat outside fast food places.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,668 ✭✭✭Corkbah

OP - can you give us a breakdown of the €1.16Billion ....the article claims absenteeism is one of the contributing factors ... is it not possible these "statistics" do not reflect the actual cost.

what does the state pay for in relation to obesity ? who determines obesity ? I'm 5'8 and 14stone .... technically overweight ...and obese according to international standards....yet my arms, legs are toned belly has a little pouch but nothing major.

so why not call for that then ... punish those that have a flaw or that make an error due to being overworked..... such a utopian world you want.

do you also want to only have children with blonde hair and blue eyes ?

where do you stand on people guilty of crimes ...do we get rid ? how about fraudsters ?...politicians that lie ??

You can gain fat eating healthy food and you can lose fat eating unhealthy food.

They can't stop people from snorting crack cocaine and injecting marijuana inside prisons.

So even if it was deemed ethical - trying to prevent fatties from shoveling cream buns and burgers down their pie-holes would be impossible.

Hordes of "big boned" people licking windows everywhere. We can't have that, the honest window cleaner will have no work then.

Understood, but it's a lot harder to gain it when eating the healthy food. I also know that eating healthy doesn't make you healthy. But something like this would be a pro-active approach in a country that seems to me if full of passive complainers. It also means that junk food is available to everyone in the right circumstance.

Yes because chubloids eating a Mc Donalds is a much bigger problem than junkies and skangers shooting up in broad daylight then harrasing the general public for money.

Although we could cover the junkies in Chocolate and let the tubsters eat them - problem solved (junkies are low fat)

Junkies may be low fat but I am sure they would be toxic with all the drugs in them, unless your cunning plan is to have the tubsters eat the junkies, and then for the tubsters to die out due to overdosing on the drugs in the junkies they have eaten. :) Quite cunning that,

Unfortunately people can fall into a habitual eating regardless of their level of education. It's always easy to say we'll educate our way out of this but I would guess that education in Ireland is at a level higher than at any time previous yet obesity is on the rise. It's habits we need to change.

WTF ??? Strawman ??? because I asked your opinion on what to do with other parts of society ... which I see flaws in !

you asked for opinions on what we think about effectively punishing fat people for being fat ...I returned the favour asking your opinion on other sectors of society

I have reported your post for accusing me of being a straw man ...or even associated with them - I am not and am offended by your accusation.

What about an obese person who has lost a substantial amount of weight through leading a healthy lifestyle but still has more to go? Say they allow themselves one treat a week. Would they have to get their Mars Bars on the black market or hang around outside shops until a skinny person agreed to go buy them a Mars Bar?

Kind of like giving a junkie a fix for giving up the Heroine for a while or giving an alcoholic a pint. It's not a step forward and it reinforces junk food as a reward.

The garda would be raiding tubsters houses looking for their stashes of mars bars and they would be arresting the dealers selling the mars bars to tubsters. :)
