Hi everyone I got Saorview working. I got the correct male to male cable 5m extension. I used this along with a "Mercury" Amplified indoor aerial which was situated facing south east on a window ledge inside.

For some reason the "one for all" aerial wouldn't get a signal doing the same as above.

All this did the trick and I got Saorview on the TV.

I want to thank each of the posters for there suggestions and patience in helping me get the signal.

    All the best :)

Do they have to pass a cable all the way from the attic into the back of the tv?

    Yes.

If you have existing satellite cable (not SkyQ), the aerial cable can be combined with that satellite cable in the attic and split again before connecting to the TV. Otherwise it needs a cable from aerial to TV.

Run a cable from the VM socket to the TV and try tune in using the cable tuner (as opposed to the terrestrial tuner), there might be channels available without a sub to VM (the analogue cable channels might still work although VM might be turning that system off soon).

If there's no channels, then try the TVs terrestrial tuner and plug the aerial back into the socket in the attic. If there's more than one socket on the VM outlet, try each in turn with the TV tuner.

Regarding the satellite dish, the cables for that are probably routed through the attic to a socket at a TV point. There will be threaded F connectors on the satellite connection socket on the wall, whereas cable and terrestrial sockets are push on coax.

Yes the cable that you coiled up. Is it just a small socket type unit or is it a box with a power input?

Check the connectors on it first to make sure it matches the TVs input socket.

What make/model TV? Normally every TV has a tuner that accepts either terrestrial (via aerial) or cable (VM) input. In the TV setup menu it will prompt to pick which one because the TV tunes one or the other but not both. In any case there might not be any channels from the VM socket.

If you knew where each cable from attic and dish are routed, it would make it easier to figure out what the options are. An installer will just put in new cables from dish and aerial if they can't find the existing ones. It might even be the case that cables were disconnected from dish and reconnected to VM socket.
