Why has BSkyB got a copyright on the word "skybox"? Are their receivers actually branded a skybox? I always thought they were called sky HD box or sky+........

These boxes are sold as free to air boxes anyway. Anything can be modified for a different purpose after its been sold!

I really dont know but do agree with you, they were stopped and thats that, there is talks going on between importer and customs but that's all i know for the moment

A large consignment of "Skybox" branded receivers have been seized at point of entry into the uk.
Apparently this is over a copyright / Branding issue with them been branded as "skybox"

Importer has said the manufacturers have now or are in the process of rebranding the receivers to another name.

So this could be seen as a sign of things to come,

    Sky acting the maggot :(
some thing similar to apple, did they not take a cafe owner to court as he had used the word apple in the cafes name, this will become very interesting in the future when the lawyers seek income over this.

How can you call this Sky acting the maggot if they are trying to stop companies pretending to be them?

Probably because these boxes can be used for freeview and the fact they don't use the exact word "skybox"

What could loosely be described as a pub in my town is called McDonalds, wonder how long before they are in court:P

So many FTA boxes can be patched to do stuff they aren't really meant to do.This has been going on for years and will continue so long as there's demand.I even know pensioners who are using them.

You should see what the poor bastards are getting for €30 a month from UPC down here, the sum total of 16 channels or if they are lucky a digital service that packs in almost every day.

So now I know what they are discussing on pension morning outside the post office: "do ya know where I can get one of them box yokes for the stations? Shhhhhhh, don't let anyone hear you but here's a number, this fella will sort ya out, don't get caught 'cos I was told you'll get life in prison for doing it":pac:

There's a whole pile of case law regarding the tort of passing off, though if HMRC are involved its more likely they were treating them as counterfeit goods.

As for this thread, I think its really run its course at this stage. If anyone really feels like it should be re-opened I'm open to representations but I really think the potential for abuse is too great and its sailed close to the wind of few times.
