Travellers have just moved in up the road

    Hi Lads and Lasses,

This morning much to my surprise and dismay a large number of caravans and vans have moved in within 100 meters of my house. Ordinarily i would not care, but due to the secluded area we live in it is of great concern to us and our neighbours.

Now before i get the army of bleeding hearts coming on giving me grief, i should clarify a few things.

    1) they illegally entered the land
    2) in our area there were other tinkers responsible for about 10 burglaries
    3) They are now camped right next to the luas line

So i'm on here asking if anyone has any experience of this, and how we should go about trying to get them to move on? We have contacted the property managers and all the rest of that so we have to see what they say.
The Gardai notified me that they have had around 10 calls about them since this morning. They moved in last night.

The really big issue is that the field they have moved into is feckin huge and the idea of a mass migration into it is terrifying.

P.S. If you come on saying i am over reacting or that "they are people too "etc....or not all tinkers are criminals blah blah blah. I agree with you for the most part but you try having a van load of tinkers sitting outside your gaff for a week straight waiting for you to go to work so they can kick your front door in and then we'll talk. (This happened last year in the same house)

You wouldn't happen to live in Sweden, particularly Stockholm University?
Stockholm University exchange students have been told to leave their accommodation immediately after a community of travellers set up an illegal camp nearby, raising concerns for the students' safety.

If they are camped on private land, it is a lot easier to get them moved. If they're on Council land - more difficult.

In the meantime, have you considered getting your driveway paved?

This wouldnt happen to be the luas redline is it, because i was driving around last night and there was more than your average travellers floating around the area with UK reg vehicles x2 of them drove right on through a set of red lights in front of me.

Unlikely, unless the luas expansion programme has lost the run of itself
    3) They are now camped right next to the luas line

I reckon the OP would literally have to leave Europe if they literally tarred a group of people with the same brush. At least use a different sterile brush for each person.

In theory FB, in theory. In practice it can get intimidatory quite quickly.

Its always very hard to move them. If they parked in the middle of the m50, you would still have a job to move them

To get them moved on, Ring the council and the Gardai, they will be slow to do anything though unless they're blocking gateways

What's wrong with 'tinker'? I thought the 'k' word was the bad one. Someone told me that tinker came from the tinkerman, people who would pass through places buying and selling tin and other metals?

Tinker comes from fixing tin, a job they used to do. Some people find it offensive, maybe they don't like being associated with working? :pac:

I take everything you have just said and filed it under things that i couldn't give 2 flying fecks about. Tinkers, knackers, itinerants, wildlings etc etc.

I would prefer for my entire post to stink of prejudice than my road smelling of stale cheese sandwiches.

most old people call them tinkers, as that what most travellers were around 50 years ago, i.e. people that work with tin

Or they are concerned about how this situation may develop going on previous bad experience? While most members of the Traveling community are not involved in dubious activities, it would take naivety of the highest order to suggest there wasn't a rogue element among them and an active one at that. Living beside a new encampment would raise concerns with most people in the real world.
The term tinker is a derogatory bigoted term and your entire post stinks of prejudice.
Actually it's a very old term for traveling metalworkers. It may have negative connotations today, but was perfectly acceptable a description not so long ago particularly in rural areas and among Travellers themselves.

FWIW,Briantwin's PS would appear to deny the simplistic "bigot" accusation.

They could be hoping the council or community makes them a cash offer to fúck off.

Which is a pity as it's a subject that warrants proper discussion and measured debate. Sadly with this subject the latter can be rare elements indeed, hence the usual lockage. Like I say, a pity as it makes the whole subject a sacred cow never to be spoken of and that's not a good thing for any society.

It's actually completely different depending on where they are parked.
On Council lands, the Housing Act would be used to move them on, but the Council must demonstrate that alternative suitable traveller accomodation is available.
If it's private lands, trespass law can be used - no alternative accommodation is required to be available.
If it's in the middle of the M50 (or any other busy road), section 69 of the 1993 Roads Act is used - they would be reomved very quickly under this if camped dangerously.

Are you sure about that? Tinker arises from their past when they fixed up tin/metal items for locals.

Use that term in front of Travellers and you won't be long being corrected. "Tinker" is an archaic term that is now considered patronising and is often used in a derogatory manner. Groups are entitled to define themselves and what they wish to be called and tinker isn't on the list to be honest.

your entire post is a load of bollix. the op has good reason to be concerned. lets say maybe 5% of the general population(not just travellers) are scumbags, and lets say 100 travellers have parked up beside the op that means there are 5 scumbags who Will steal from the op at the first given opportunity.and before anybody jumps in and says what about the 5% of settled scumbags already living in the op's neighbourhood, the old adage rings true, you don't dump on your own doorstep.blatant trolling.

Also threads like this get locked because of the sheer nonsense, hatred and bigotry that people come out with. Already on this thread we have several references to burning people out of their homes. These same people will then moan they aren't "allowed a reasonable discussion" when pulled up on it.

    It's gas.

Some moved in beside me last summer for a few weeks. I was talking to the girl that was one of the people staying there. She told me she has a house in XXX town and only moves in to the caravan in the summer.
