    I am looking for that special formula which can be used to calculate how young is too young for a given man to go out with a beor/female.

    Half your age plus 7 I think, it's a stupid concept anyway.

    It was on the project maths paper this year. Surprised you didn't know.

    If they get up to offer you their seat when you walk into the room.

    It was probably wrong, that's why he's asking here.:pac:

    I really should post more in the mathematics forum.

    Below 18 its a absolute Max of 2 years. Above 18 and any things fair game.

    This is elegant maths. i need a sophisticated solution currently have x/2 +7 where x is your age. however I dont feel this takes enough into consideration.

    consider an 80yo... by this rule they may date a 47 yo. for me this is absurd and outlines a flaw with the current algorithm. any more advanced models out there?

    Sh1t man - i reckon there's only so many people who know the word beor - is it not slang very local to the midlands - we use it all the time where i'm from

    anyway - its half your age plus 7.........or over 18 if the algorithm aint working in your favour

    It's perfectly ok if you fancy your gran.

    And think of the inheritance.

    Everyone is very witty and whatnot but I am yet see a sophisticated, new approacj to this solution. can someone explain the significance of 7?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,026 ✭✭✭Leaving Cert Student

    Actually taking that "Half your age plus seven" thing as gospel is thick. What if they're half your age plus six? Will you die if you go out with them or something?

    Exactly, stop trying to argue and brainstorm solutions.

    Girls start getting hot at age 7.

    (I am joking)

    Why? What will you do if she doesn't?

    I think the idea of adding a constant is ludacris. A percentage depending on the age would be more appropriate. Perhaps growing exponenentially?

    I think growing exponentionally should be left to the man ;)

    18+-(how much the neighbours snigger)/2+X(y) where x is if she's 18 or over it's ok as long as you're OK with people thinking she's only with you for your money if y>10

    :confused: I'm not waving any authority around, just thought the post was a bit rude.

    Is it not half your age plus 7 or divided by 2? or half your age and then plus 7 or minus 2? Something like that. :/

    Interesting approach. perhaps a formula devised to give parameters both sides of one's age makes more sense? though.. in general... one can go with someone many years older while not necessarily many years younger. Do we have mathematicians?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 387 ✭✭DaveDaRave

    if (age > 17)
    {
    bang();

    (x-17) > 0.
    After that it's just a matter of opinion and taste.

    I think x/2 + x/3 is more appropriate. open to feedback.

    I always work off the half your age rule.

    Algorithm be a maths calculation if you a leaving cert student if you college student + algorithm could be either a maths calculation or a form of programming code as per above with parameters.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,491 ✭✭✭looking_around

    gosh.. I don't take age into account at all.
    If I meet someone and we hit off, great. If he turns out to be older or younger than expected why would that matter? (so long as you're both adults obviously)

    People put far too much emphasis on age.

    CheckOutGirl(Minx m)
    {
        if (m.getAge() < 18)
        {
             throw new Exception("Too young, back off");

    This is elegant maths. i need a sophisticated solution currently have x/2 +7 where x is your age. however I dont feel this takes enough into consideration.

    Formula: Y=AX^B

    Variables;
    Y=Result, if less than 17 then younger age is too young.
    A=Older Age
    X=Age Difference
    B=Log(younger age as a % of Older age)/Log(2)

    Parameters;
    X must be a whole integer (the higher it is the lower the result),
    Y must be rounded to the nearest whole integer
    B must be negative and less than 0 (round to 4 decimal places max)

    Example: 21 year old and 17 year old
    Y=21*4^(log(0.81)/log(2))
    Y=21*4^-0.304
    Y=14

    I'm aware this won't produce an ideal result for every scenario (older people with an age gap of >8 years) but it's 3:30am so frankly I don't care!

    A fascinating idea. The conclusion in general seems to be "if there is grass on the pitch, play ball".

    While this is a wise motto, I feel it is necessary to find a numerical value or means of expressing this pre-pubescent/post-pubescent theory. As we all know, this phenomenon is not constant and must be delicately estsblished.

    God everyone is just trying to crack jokes here! Can I get a serious response to this age-old problem or is this indeterminable mathematically? I am going to try a geometric approach.. i will update soon

    You can take it as a certainty everyone is treating your question with the respect it deserves.

    How are you going to factor in societal values? Are you going to apply a variable to all 200+ countries and countless sub divisions of each country.

    You're the one that's coming across like the two guys in weird science. Btw, you realise you posted this in After Hours?

    Not a joke, just an observation.

    You're going to model it, eh?

    What research do you propose to find out what society considers acceptable? Are you going to do this before or after your psychology degree, masters or doctorate?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,659 ✭✭✭CrazyRabbit

    I'm not sure really. But younger than 5 is a really bad idea. They can't keep secrets.

    The comedy keeps on coming... desperate for the virtual approval of your army of boardsies are we? craving that special "thanks", lol. I will take the age of consent into consideration of course and I will structure some mathematical method of incorporating the idea that with increasing age comes increasing acceptability. this is not proportional, however, and there lies our problem.

    You're now seeing jokes where there are none. I simply pointed out how inadequate you are to model.

    For your sake and anybody with an sense of humour I suggest you take this to a science forum.

    Mathematician here. The answer (which I have derived by a formula far too complex for you to grasp, so I won't bother you with it) is whatever you're into, as long as it's legal.

    Something about a moderator of an online forum calling me inadequate that I am struggling to take seriously.

    I have received some great insights on this forum and I intend to keep it here.
