    Just going to post the track if people aren't familiar;

The beat is astonishingly good. The sample flip and chops are ridiculous.

Average rapping though, and i've said before, they don't ride the beat to it's full potential. Justin Bieber kills both of them with his 'freestyle' over the beat.

That says a lot of justin bieber kills the two of allegedly the best rappers out there!!!

Not saying Bieber is a better rapper, I'm saying that he raps better over the Otis beat. Kanye and Jay-Z both didn't rap over the beat properly. This is merely my opinion. Bieber flows better over the choppy bits, whereas K & J kind of leave a silence.

Possibly the best beat on the album and didn't kanye make it in like 8 minutes?

  • Moderators, Music Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 25,730 Mod ✭✭✭✭Boom_Bap

The story goes that No I.D. listened to the album before mastering and started to give out to Kanye that he didn't produce anything on the record. So in a huff type moment, Kanye fired up his gear and knocked out Otis pretty quickly.

But there is also a rumour that he had given a demo of the beat to Pusha T previously which he turned down.

So i reckon it wasnt start to finish in 8 minutes, more a case of polishing the demo and laying down his vocals.

My watch must be wrong, is it still 2011? Does this really merit its own thread?

So what is it, is there a time limit on what people can post??? i taught this was a hip hop forum... Where people can post about hip hop, old, new and present...

With regards to the beat being made in 8 mins, proves my point "FOR ME" its not a great rap song, basically its a sample of an old record with two egomaniacs rapping about the paps following them... (Obviously years apon years of practice has given kayne the skill to sample this song in a seriously catchy and professional production)

Now before people start shouting and roaring about how stupid i am, my point is this do i think jay z or kayne are **** rappers!!!??? NO!!

i just think they have lost themselves in the money and the fame...

Jay z and kayne are serious rappers, producers and everything in between... But..... You don't hear serious meaningful songs from them anymore.. And that personifies itself in the song "otis"....

Now different tastes and all that comes into account, i prefer rappers to rap about something, a cause, something meaningful...

Akala for example or the new-be macklemore...

You've made and debated these points elsewhere. Why start a new thread on a single song released two years ago to just make the same point in a more roundabout way?

  • Registered Users Posts: 900 ✭✭✭danbrosnan

i want people to tell me why otis is a good song....

Explain the lyrics why they find them good, the beat, the sample... Boombap told me something i didn't know about the song, about how kayne chopped up the sample, etc... and i went back to listen to it and you know what i have a better appreciation for the production...

But rap is all about lyrics and for me the lyrics are cat on this song...

  • Registered Users Posts: 411 ✭✭LUPE

You could do this about hundreds of thousands of songs. You've done this to death in that Macklemore thread.

No one has said you have to like Otis, or any other song ever made. Equally, people don't have to justify why they like a given song.

Move on and maybe get some fresh air.

I cant get enough of fresh air... too much fresh kerry air to be honest...

if you cant explain why you like the song thats fine..

Didn't I show you that song New Day in another thread when you said pretty much the same thing? They're rapping to their unborn children, not their cars or their watches or their bottles of cristal.

Thats very original rapping to there unborn children.... I did listen to new day, about ten times actually and low and behold first rap lyric on new day is:

"I never let my unborn son have an ego"...

Never said it was was a bad song but the lyrical content has been repeated over and over and over again...

I mean jays verse is the same after:

"Cause you ain’t even alive, paparazzi pursuin’ ya"...

    Some lyrics from "otis",:

"Popping' bottles, puttin' supermodels in the cab, proof" and

"They aint see me cause I pulled up in my other Benz, Last week I was in my other other Benz, Throw your diamonds up cause we in this bitch another 'gain".

I gonna finish on this, i love rap music always have, i didn't say otis was a bad song, i asked "tell me how its a good rap tune? As in good RAP lyrics, and in the end thats what rap is, lyrics...

i just feel rap, especially by the top rappers has gotten drained and mutated by money, fame and success... 50 cent is another example he cant rap about noting but his money, his fame, his ego and again how rich he is... Noting about the fact people all over the world are committing suicide from drugs, people starving and the world is generally a ****ed up place due to commercialism and general unfairness...

50 cents new song with Kendrick lemar is serious, i love it, but the lyrics are the same **** again... thats all my point was, i wasn't trying to get on anybody's nerves or anything like that...

Buy maybe lads its just me, i am a bit of a deep thinker and not the dancing type so maybe thats the way raps gone, dance and poppy... i must go fishing and quote on quote get some air...

danbrosnan i've learned something quick enough when i first joined boards, its not to be a stubborn pr!ck and judge other peoples music, you don't like it, so what get over it, who cares, id say you listen to a lot of stuff other people hate, but they wont be starting new threads on it.

I dont want rappers to be bono, just trying to find out why people liked the song, and i got one answer and that was the beat... and i admit it a class sample.. Thread over...

Dont agree with you at all just go back through the hip hop forum, nearly every thread is about some artist, criticising, admiring and even loving there music... Sure if you love or hate a song, you have the right to an opinion... You don't have to get over and stay quiet and not try to educate yourself into why people may like or dislike an artist... You have mistaken stubborn with opinionated which is quite common in ireland... Thread over...

Well maybe that's because he can't relate to it, or maybe he just doesn't give a shít about it, it's not as if he's obliged to.

I know where dan is coming from in fairness but like paddy said not every rapper is bono and the fact is most of the rappers who have made it big commercially to the extent where there multi millionaires have kind of followed this trend.

You could argue there's exceptions like nas but imo even the great nastradamus often spits repetitive bars about women, cars, money etc.

50 has been actually feeding people in Africa and America. His headphone/boxing brand SMS is geared up towards feeding poor people aswell as his SK drink brand.

He's the only rapper I know of that's that big and actually cares about the state of poverty in the world or at least is contributing towards stopping it.

I'm hoping his latest ventures will transcend into his music as he's my favourite rapper and even though his new stuff shows slightly more substance and hunger I still know he's a gangsta rapper and has always made a point of staying true to the sub genre even though he could grow a lot as an emcee if he started rapping about how he wants to try help to stop poverty instead of just doing it through interviews etc.

On Otis , I actually don't mind the song. I just take it for what it is which IMO is a good song.

OP - yawn. Your axe is well and truly ground. Your just left with the wooden handle at this stage

I seen that on hard knock tv... and 50 cent is a genius and a good rapper just sick of the same rap over, and over again..

Macklemore like everybody else will get repetitive too mark my words, he's relatively new on the scene so there's a lot for him to rap about for the first time but it's only a matter of time before his stuff starts sounding too alike to his previous work, there's only so much one man can rap about

  • Registered Users Posts: 900 ✭✭✭danbrosnan

tbh before he gets repetitive he will pack it in... He has stated that.. But i am glad you agree with me... :D

Lol. Don't believe everything that comes out a rappers mouth Stanley.

Jay-Z was meant to drop one or two albums then stay in the board room (Bleek's Hand it Down Intro on Hard Knock Life I believe was meant to be the passing of the torch). And of course we all know about his retirement.

Lupe, Nas, Game, Frank Ocean and a whole bunch of other rappers all talked about leaving the game after on, two or three albums too.

But the allure of the game, it keeps calling their name. They ain't going anywhere soon.

Just a note on the song, never thought it was much cop. Don't think the use of the sample is good either. Not an inspired choice.

  • Registered Users Posts: 7,450 ✭✭✭Blisterman

Picking out random lines as some kind of proof that an artist or song is crap doesn't really prove anything. You could do that to anyone.

"She loves you, yeah, yeah, yeah"

God Lennon and McCartney were crap lyricists.

Pusha has turned down a lot of dope beats - Super Thug, Niggas in Paris and now Otis!

Thanks god he didn't let the Grindin beat pass to Jay-Z, as apparently was close to happening!
