Watched Season 1 over the weekend. A really engrossing piece of TV, you get hooked from the start, saying that very little was resolved in episode 8 so I felt it ended on an anticlimatic note. The soundtrack is top class as is the alpine scencery.

Top notch TV series. Watched the whole thing over the weekend.
    Roll on season 2.:D

Only a matter of time I suppose, before US TV copies it.

AMC no doubt....and they'll fluff it up like The Killing

    Brilliant series.
Those involved are fans of Twin Peaks (according to the Channel 4 site) and it shows!
Fingers crossed for Series 2 being even half as good.

Is the 2004 movie "Les Revenants" worth watching?

You're right, a US remake is already on the cards. ABC has commissioned a pilot.

UK remake too - Paul Abbott bought the rights.

Have just watched this today. Got it on DVD from the library, thought it would do me a week or so, watched it all in one go.

It seemed like the first series was written with the intention of there being a second series so I wouldn't worry about them running out of plot or it going too far from the formula that worked for the first one.

So many questions left to answer too so I'm really looking forward to a second series now. Just in case....
Who is Lucy and why is she there? Was she already dead when she first showed up? What happened with Léna and her Dad that she ended up in hospital for? Who was the other guy that actually shot "Victor" and his family. Is the Helping Hand really just a wacky cult? Where did all the police officers go? Why did Victor latch on to Julie? What's up with Adele's baby and why do they want it? Have the "zombies" just vanished and what about the two living people they took with them?

I agree with all the grumbling about US/UK remakes. I really don't see the point. American TV is weird though. They usually only show things they make themselves. Doesn't make sense to me. How much would it have cost Channel 4 to make a show like this compared to how much it costs to buy the rights? Seems like smarter business to just buy the shows as they are.

The success of this on Channel 4 and the success of Generation War on RTÉ recently show that there is an audience there on the more mainstream channels for good TV, not just on the more specialist ones like BBC 4.

I've just finished watching through the series on Netflix, and I can only rave about it. It is what is IMO lacking from even much of the great TV out there: cinematic. Forget the plot itself (which is consistently intriguing), it's the way that it's told that makes The Returned so memorable. Mogwai's impressively atmospheric score and a deeply calculated visual style (which, especially in the last few episodes, understands the power of a good long take or slooowww pan) give it a serious edge over most if not all of its contemporaries. The episodes are as much about atmosphere as they are about driving everything forward - the last couple of episodes particularly are immensely creepy affairs, full of disturbing sights and a deeply rooted air of unease and surrealism. It also puts an admirable amount of effort into characterisation - happy to drip feed revelations and information at a delicate pace. It's refreshing to see a show that is in no rush to get anywhere, and is instead happy to give subplots the space they need to breathe. No-one felt shortchanged here, which is great, and there's plenty of subtlety in relationships and themes.

I loved it - The Returned IMO offers that extra layer of artistry that separates a great show from a merely good one.

Working my way through it. think I've sat down to watch the pilot about three times and completely forgotten to go back to it. Looking forward to getting through it.

Those last couple of episodes are particularly strong. Overall, I found the show creepy, atmospheric and affecting. Certainly, more so than The Walking Dead ever will be despite the similarities - grief, loss, uncertainty, mistrust and weird stuff going on.

    Also,
bit of a Close Encounters of a Third Kind vibe going on, maybe?

I recently started watching this again, as the American remake is beginning to turn up on Netflix (there are only 2 episodes up so far, I think there's a new one each Tuesday or Wednesday - possibly only on US Netflix, though, I'm not sure). I thought I'd watch them each episode in turn. The American remake is very faithful, if a little bit shinier looking and a lot less atmospheric than the French version. The small differences are interesting to note.

Just saw an ad saying season 2 was coming soon. Sorry if this is not news! I know it's starting in France this month but I thought it would longer for us to get it.

More4 not channel 4 are showing the new series - so if you are on Freesat no HD for you! :(

More4 is now the home to all Channel 4 subtitled drama - Mammon, Le Resistance, The Saboteurs, etc

has anyone been watching the second series of this?

One criticism that I didn't find with s01, the translation into English is muck, I'm not talking about not tallying with the French but that the sentences make no sense

For instance s02 ep02 "We were offered a temporarily housing".... there are many other instances, i'll post some of the worst ones

other than that, I'm enjoying it

Where are you watching it with English subtitles already?

I doubt it's broadcast in France with English subtitles and it hasn't come back on English TV yet.

I don't really care where you're watching it. I'm just saying that may be your issue with the subtitles.

Not being smart here but did the French series win an Emmy?

Hot French zombie series The Returned won best drama at the 41st International Emmy Awards, held Monday night in New York.

That's great, though 'only' an international Emmy :P
I just thought it would be a turn up for the books if the foreign version won an Emmy over the US remake!
    Still good though!
