I hope we dont get snow, after a mild start to October I went for ContiSportContact 3 which I then found out are only summer tyres, not designed for use under 0 degrees:eek:.
If they have lots of thread left and the temp doesnt go much under 0, you will be ok with some care and preparation.
If I get winter tyres are they better on the front or back if I want to be a cheap bastered.
While usually a great way to start an argument, on a RWD its pretty "safe" to suggest put them on the rears so the ass doesnt swing out and you get traction for movement. I did this one year and it was fine, but mixing tyre types is not recommended as it can lead to unpredictable handling.

In that scenario your braking and handling will be far worse than your power putting down ability, leading to a seriously understeery yet unsteerable car in bad weather if you push it on.

Braided brake lines for 60 quid for the alfa.
    Yay or nay?
Probably won't be going on a track, but it will be getting ebc green stuff pads and groved vented and drilled disks so thinking it may be worthwhile.
Anyone got any opinions? Plus experience?

Do it online man, I'd rather set myself on fire than go to the tax office:P

Doing it online is very simple these days. I done it a few times for my mother online (she not great with computers). It only takes a few minutes and they send out the discs. On subject of tax does anyone here get a text to say there road tax is nearly up. My mother got one the other day and I thought it was weird and she said it was for my dads car so I don't know why she would have got the message. Unless she was just mixing up the two cars them being the same model colour and all that :pac:

Saw one of the strangest sights of my motoring life yesterday.

I was tootling along a dual carriageway in light traffic in the afternoon. I'm looking ahead and realised something wasn't quite right. There was a car-less wheel trundling at full pelt (100km/h+) down the road about 150m ahead not far in front of the car ahead of me.

After the inevitable 'pinch me' feeling I realised it had come off a double axle trailer ahead and was now trundling harmlessly into the bushes of an embankment before a flyover. I chased the owner of the trailer down and told him what happened. He seemed somewhat sceptical. He probably thought I'd pulled him over to beat him up for some reason:D

It was weird to follow a loose wheel for about a quarter of a mile!!

I'd get the braided lines before the discs. Better off with standard discs. More reliable last longer and are quieter. You need to be driving illegally regularly to get use of drilled/grooved discs.

Does anyone know of any Honda dealers in Dublin that supply Legend parts new?

I've got the disks and pads.
I've drove an alfa v6 with the same break set up and was seriously inpressed with them. Then got the disks for a serious bargain!
Saw the lines pop up for a reasonable price so I'm tempted to get them as well.
    Seems like they're worth it!

Could be worse, could be the time I was pelting up the M7 around Newbridge, only to encounter a driver going south in the outside lane

I'd give them all a call tbh, they should be able to source them.

Todays commute was a pain, went fine until I hit Hillsborough then twelve miles in a three lane carriageway took an hour and ten mins :(

I'd also forgotten some of the rules of driving up North which to me are as follows:

    1. The speed limit is actually the minimum speed other drivers will tolerate, go slower and you will spend your life being overtaken.
    2. As there is no proper motorway on the N1, it is not unusual to find incredibly short merging lanes, and/or traffic in the middle of the north/south lanes trying to get across/merge.
    3. When stuck in traffic in a multi lane road, signalling to indicate is not a declaration of a wish, rather it is a declaration of intent, so don't expect the signalling driver to wait for you to make way.

Once I remembered all of the above, I quite enjoyed my trip. On the way home, I got from Sprucefields to home in an hour twenty :)

Biggest thing that strikes me difference wise in terms of Northern/Southern drivers is there is a much greater willingness to be accommodating amongst Northern drivers, give way to people etc, that you don't find down here.

The A1. What a dire road.

Short merges, bad junctions, kerbs that basically appear *right* beside the outside line, people flooring it across the carriageways to get to a junction, hard shoulders that reappear and disappear at will, ****e signage and a speed limit of 70 :pac:

I actually dread to think how anyone hitting it early morning rush hour who has never hit it before deals with it. Now I realise I was once that person, but by jeepers I learned quickly.

Keep the speed up, move over to the outside lane well before any junctions, ignore that traffic sitting in the middle of north/south lanes, and basically you are ok.

Otherwise drive it at your peril.

If they invested in decent junctions/a few flyovers, it would be 100% safer.

I suspect your average Southern driver who has never encountered such a system would have a breakdown upon doing so.

I remember due to lack of signage asking several people what the limit was. Everyone said it was 60 (mph for those used to kph) yet you come across 60 zones where if you are lucky the inside lane are still zooming along at 75 + and god knows what the outside lane are doing.

I genuinely think it's the greater discipline Northern drivers seem to have that stops carnage up there, if we'd that system down here there would be widescale catastrophe.

And then as you get close to Belfast people randomly changing lanes across five lanes of traffic!

edit : I forgot to add that going South the lunatics/powers that be have imposed a 30 limit coming out of Belfast, it's hilarious seeing those obey it versus those who don't and their behaviour, you literally have to keep your eyes peeled!

You learn quickly alright on that road. Another thing is you learn to realise how good the average N/M road is down here.

    040924_cb_mp_comm_sign_001.jpg

Once you see that sign, it's 70mph on a Dual Carrigeway and Motorway and 60mph on a Single Carrigeway unless your in a town and it's 30. Though usually they have 30/40 signs for built up areas.

Thank you, first time I've gotten an answer to that question, before it was a blanket 60 mph regardless! What is the red sign with the white stripe in the middle? (sorry if I sound really ignorant)

I was just thinking tonight as I drove along the A1 how awful the road surface is, my car has a fairly stiff suspension and at times I literally felt like I was being shaken around the car, between differences in camber, road surface and road condition.

You get on the M1 down here, and you almost know it due to the difference!

    I love that feckin sign.
The road I'm on has gone from 100 km/h to 60 km/h and now has a "go safe van". Bring back the old speed limit as there was never an accident on it.

For the unitiated who are used to driving down here though that's the sign you have gone through a limited zone and are now back on the national limit, which is different depending on the type of road here compared to the North.

So they end up going at what they thing is close to the max, e.g. 55mph and are blown out of it by people overtaking them at 80mph plus on the A1. I see it everytime I'm up there, can't tell you the amount of southern cars I passed today who were doing no more than 50mph

I know! It's not actually that long since we've had rid of it. There is still a few of them knocking about with a new sign stuck over it.

The standard speed limit is different for different vehicles, even vans/campers and then heavier goods vehicles. Can't remember what they are though.

Yes that thing, no entry sign to what? Up North they seem to use it as limited speed limit sign?

Northern Ireland Water. Very fond of the auld Daily vans so they are. You'll be looking for a faded southern reg one with the decals missing, amber beacons, 2 way radio aerial, glass on the rear doors and 2 very disgruntled gentlemen in the cabin :pac:

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 959 ✭✭✭guttenberg

Not quite sure then, I only know it as a No Entry sign to stop you going into a one way street/junction the wrong way. They have quite a lot of flash for cash vans around Belfast so keep an eye on your speed!

So, good chance of a job next week. Was talking to the manager there today and he said he'd call me during the week to come talk to the owner. We talked about my previous experience and then handed me a drinks menu to take home and learn off. New bar/restaurant opening up that my bro-in-law's been building.
If I do get it I'm insuring the MX5. :D
