Straight sub will do it once they are both the same caliber.

I recently changed my O/U to a semi auto. Both 12g, and both unrestricted.

A friend of mine was in with firearms oficer 2nite and he said he would have to apply for a new licence as it was a different action, he has 12 months left on o/u but he will loose that and have to pay 80 for new licence. I am thinking of changing my o/u for semi auto also ,so i will have to do the same i guess. different rules allover,

Under the law it says like for like. This is purposely vague so it can be left to the discretion of the FO. However making that kind of differentiation is just being overly pedantic.

If i were you or your mate i would fill out the FCA1, tick the sub box, fill out the entire form as it necessary for a sub, and submit it. Sometimes Gardaí give wrong info that can deter you from applying. Meaning they do not have to refuse or process an application. By applying for it as a sub he will have to process it.

It is done everywhere else. This is the first i've heard of a new application being sought for an unrestricted, 12 gauge shotgun substitution to another unrestricted 12 gauge shotgun. It basically is the definition of "like for like".

As i said above it's beyond pedantic, but for the sake of argument i could possibly see where they are coming from with a sub for an O/U to a Semi. But from a SxS to O/U, and asking for a new application.

For Christ's sake it the same caliber, same unrestricted just the barrels are lying on the side. That is too much.:rolleyes:

I subbed my pump action for a o/u no hassle at all.

You could also ignore the FO and get onto the super. The FO may tell you one thing and the super another.

Going by stories you hear some FO´s havent a clue

    Where are you based op.

I wonder what would happen if you just filled in the form and handed it in. Does the FO have to put it infront of the super.

    West or city?

If its west you'll have no bother.

Yes he does, its not his job to make the decision so it has to go to the super

Unless the semi has a capacity to hold more than three cartridges when fully loaded it should be a substitution as it's an unrestricted shotgun for an unrestricted shotgun. I don't believe that the firearms legislation has any relevant content relating to types of actions for shotguns once the type of shotgun falls in the unrestricted category.
