    Over the course of 4 years, The Smiths wrote 70 songs or so. At least 30 of those were and are devastatingly brilliant. What`s their best? For me both How Soon is Now and There is a light that never goes out clearlystand above everything else....Am I right?

    Not Like Any Other Love: The Smiths
    Duration: 30 minutes

    It's 30 years since Manchester four-piece The Smiths changed the face of British pop with their debut single Hand In Glove. In this half-hour Culture Show special, fellow Mancunian and lifelong fan Tim Samuels sets out to find out why The Smiths have such a special place in the hearts of a generation of Brits. The Smiths were only around for five years in the mid-eighties, but to this day the sentiment their music evokes is strong. Samuels pays visits to a variety of dedicated fans including fashion designer Wayne Hemingway, poet Simon Armitage, Labour MP Kerry McCarthy and Oasis songwriter Noel Gallagher to analyse the look, the lyrics, the issues and the riffs that made The Smiths Britain's first, and arguably best ever, indie rock band.

    Impossible to pick just one. A few of my personal favourites are Suffer Little Children, Hand In Glove, Paint A Vulgar Picture, Asleep, Half A Person.

    Could name lots more.

    Was going to weigh in with 'William it was really nothing' as well..'the rain falls hard in dundrum town,this town has dragged you down' ..that lyric alone typifies what the Smiths stand for to me..a longing to escape small town close mindedness.
    How soon is now prob shades it though with its iconic intro and distinctive guitar riff.The Smiths have some great songs but some songs such as Ask me I find appalling.

    Surprised so many people are going for "How Soon Is Now" - good song but not one of their very best imo. Very hard to pick just one but "Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want" is 2 minutes of musical perfection.
