whats the rules regarding shooting pigeons out of season ???some fella was telling me the farmer needs to get permission called a section 45 before you can shoot them for crop protection out of season

He might be referring to a section 42 which is authorisarion to shoot wild birds/animals out of season for the purpose of preventing damage to crops/stock.

It is necessary with deer to get this, but in terms of pigeon you can shoot pigeons under derogation (without section 42) if they are causing damage to crops. Under derogation means there is a partial revocation of the laws surrounding the normal seasons when such damage is being caused.

so i can decoy pigeons if i see 2o birds on my permission eating in the field i can set up and be ok on not get in trouble

For pigeons, yes. You can decoy if they are causing damage to the crops.

so what is damaging crops if there is pigeons in a field they still might not be causing damage

Suppose it's subjective.

If there are two pigeons then they cannot be considered to be destroying the crops. However if there are continuous flocks of birds, and the farmer/land owner wants them gone for fear of loss of revenue/damage to his crops then shoot away.

It's a decision i, nor anyone, can make for you

I always assumed they fall into the same category as rabbits and fox and can be controlled all year. What about them ripping plastic off bails does that count. Jesus were gona be over run if you can't shoot em all year.

As for the bales. Not sure. As above it depends on the scale of the problem.

Well as you probably no feed is running low and between greys and pigeon at what's left for nesting repairs one of my permissions has told me to "send their beaks out their arse" don't think i can redirect him towards boards.ie ha:-)

I think "shoot them" is adequate.

We're not the law. I'm not even telling you or anyone what they can or cannot do. I'm merely answering questions, as to the legal position, as best i can. What people do off boards.ie is their business.

oh ya i realise that i always appreciate sound advice thanks for the advice its just news to me regarding sessions for pigeon and such. I have quite a few friends i must enlighten. Are you aware of any regulations on trapping.

I have never shot a pigeon out of season but if I saw them pulling the plastic off my bales I'd shoot away as I'm protecting my assats, although I have to say I personally have never seen pigeons at the bales,crows yes but never pigeons but that's just my experience

Once the crows do the initial ripping the pigeons help themselves alright
