Job Interview - Are Leggings okay?

There are 3 main reasons for this.

    1. I find the band at the top of tights rather uncomfortable.
    2. I'm usually wearing them with boots, so I like to be able to wear a pair of socks instead of tights.
    3. They can be warmer than tights.

These are exactly the reasons I wear leggings. Another is that they are more breathable than tights so in the summer my legs don't get all sweaty. I get the high denier look without the sweatiness.

When I wear them with boots it would be very difficult for someone to tell weather I am wearing tights or leggings without looking really closely.

Fairy enough if you don't like them thats fine, but telling somebody to rethink their wardrobe because you don't like them is the height of arrogance.

But sure your opinion on a subjective matter is no better than my own. What makes you an expert on "what looks good"? There is no objective truth, there are only subjective opinions.

Why would I rethink my clothing choices based on a what I believe to be a silly opinion?

Exactly but it's a public forum and therefore within my right to express my opinion. If my opinion happens to differ from your own well and good.

I think they're hideous. You don't. Fair enough. Jog on.

*p.s. I can see your knickers through your leggings as you run past!

This is getting a bit too personal now. We can discuss the pros and cons of leggings without getting personal.

Highly unlikely if the top covers the bum! (which is how normal people wear leggings. Young wans wearing them as trousers are a separate matter).

Leggings have a time and a place but a lot of people seem not to know where the line is. For example legging are not acceptable for a business casual dress code as a lot of the younger girls I work with think.

You're entitled to an opinion but your opinion is not fact. You can't make blanket statements saying "All leggings are awful on every single person on the planet" and not expect reactions.

And also, no one asked for your opinion on leggings, what was asked was whether leggings were suitable attire for an interview.

You are not the holy grail of fashion and thankfully your opinion is just that - an opinion. Not fact as you seem to think :)

And also, ANY form of pants would look awful if worn too tight and was see through. This applies to trousers, skirts, and jeans too.

Good quality leggings are not see through.

Meh. I like leggings. They're ridiculously comfortable. I find jeans just dig in everywhere and I hate the feeling of tights.

They don't suit most people who wear them. If you are wearing something long enough to wear it with tights then tights are way more flattering than leggings and if you wear them with something that is too short for tights then you shouldn't be wearing leggings either. They are handy for pregnant women though. But that is about it.

I'd hate to be such a fashion victim that I'd completely forego comfort. I often wear leggings under dresses/long skirts in winter, with knee length boots because they're comfortable and warm. Yes, tights look better, but that's not enough to make me want to wear them every day.

They're not totally grand. That's what a few of us are trying to tell you. You may think they're 'grand' but they're not.

Re-think your clothing choices if you happen to like leggings. Honestly.

I'm sure you wear things the rest of us think are hideous. I wouldn't consider leggings high fashion, but to me, they're grand for heading to the park/beach/supermarket/cinema along with a long top. I don't see how they look bad once they cover my bum. I wouldn't wear them to an interview, but for every day? I don't see how they're that bad.

I wouldn't describe myself exactly a fashion victim because I don't necessary follow fashion if it doesn't suit me. I guess that's the reason I don't wear leggings either. :D

Leggings aren't exactly in fashion though, are they? That's the point. Most people I know wear them mostly for comfort. I don't care what other people think I 'should' or 'shouldn't wear. I'm aware that leggings aren't the most flattering clothes on the planet (although I think they look fine on me), but I'm not going to force myself to wear uncomfortable tights because I'm worried about what other people will say/think.

If you don't care why it bothers you so much?

It doesn't 'bother' me. I just think it's tremendously rude and condescending to tell people what they should and shouldn't wear and insinuate that anyone who wears leggings is some sort of fashion disaster stuck in the 80s. It's just rude and unnecessary. Sure, explain why you don't like leggings, but why dictate to others?

Where pray tell can you purchase these non-see through ones!? Even some of the more expensive ones seem to suffer from the translucent look.

There's nothing wrong with leggings, with the right outfit I think they look fab...anyway even if someone wears them and they don't suit them it's none of my or anyone elses business, there's plenty of other things that people wear that I would never wear and that I consider unflattering but why would it bother me what other people wear?

I would never tell them to throw them out because I don't like that, that's just ridiculous and like someone said earlier it's a very arrogant attitude to have.

You're probably just ragin' that leggings don't suit ya ;)

On topic, I think they're never going to be appropriate for a job interview. I can understand dressing in trendy clothes for a fashion shop, but I still wouldn't recommend leggings even then!

As for leggings themselves, I know people they suit and people they don't. It seems to me that if you have wider hips, they're less likely to suit you. I've a friend who's 5'8, very thin, but pear shaped. She wears leggings and flat shoes, particularly little lace-up brogues, all the time and it looks awful on her. Regardless of the length of her tops, her legs look stumpy and her hips look huge. On the other hand, I've a much shorter friend who looks lovely in leggings - perhaps because she's petite in general, perhaps because her hips are relatively narrow. She also never wears leggings with shoes, only boots.

I hate the look of both leggings and skinny jeans with light flat shoes (ballet pumps, brogues, those canvas shoes...) because I think it makes a person look stumpy, no matter what.

I'm not a fan of the regular black leggings that most people wear but I do love Black Milk leggings. They defo aren't see-through anyway.

An interview is not a disco. just because it is described as a chat does not mean everything will not be observed. Wear something your oldest aunt would approve of.

Have you decided on what to wear OP? I think ties and nice black court shoes with a black blazer would look nice with that dress.
Something like this would look smart with a good black heel. http://www.nextdirect.com/ie/en/shopping/women/tailored-looks/97/9

She already got the job about 60 posts ago. :D

Now we are just bitching about leggings. And people who (don't) like them.

I saw a girl in town before and it was about 2pm , she was wearing the see through black leggings as pants..as one does..? No top covered the top of them .. all you could see what a MASSIVE hole in them on her ass cheek and and I hope she was wearing a thong because you could see nothing but flesh. So not a good look - to make it worse she had a shops work t shirt on & a blazer!!

And yet this girl would probably come on here and swear blind her leggings are not see through.

I went out before with leggings on and thought they weren't see through.
It turns out i was wrong though.

Why didnt you just, ya know, turn the aul head to the side and look over your shoulder at your butt in a well lit mirror before you left the house? Tends to work for me.

I'm not getting into the whole see through debate but it is possible not to see anything at home and then you get out into the strong sunlight or there is strong light somewhere and the result is completely different. Especially on the parts of your body where the material gets stretched a bit more.

Thats why I suggested a well lit mirror - lit by natural light would be best. Another option is to get someone to take a photo using a flash of your butt - the pic will tell you if youre wearing see through clothes (of any persuasion).

I tend to find common sense prevails. I have a variety of pics of myself over the years where the flash illuminated the fact that some article of clothing was see through in very very strong light. Chances are it would not be visible outside of a camera flash.

On the other hand, people are complaining about seeing through leggings in ordinary light - so check in ordinary light - the buzzfeed article linked to showed the see through lady indoors - so hardly the need to extraordinary measures to ensure no see through before going out - simply look in a mirror.

Its not really rocket science, just check if the material is see through in sunlight, seems simple enough to me.

To each their own I suppose. I certainly wouldn't hire someone who wore leggings to an interview though and clearly others here wouldn't either so I was advising anyone else I'd stick with being safe and not wearing them.

Even if they were the strongest applicant.........you would over look them if they wore leggings ??

Quite possible THE most ridiculous thing Ive heard anyone say in a long while.

There are many people out there who won't hire someone if they don't wear a tie or a suit or if they feel they haven't made an effort with their appearance in some other way. Rightly or wrongly, appearance is massively important in interview situations and people will read something into how you have decided to present yourself. That's why it's important to make an effort no matter what the job.

I would imagine that the post you quoted is a commonly held opinion.
