    LOLage
To continue to provide all the benefits of Ulster Bank current accounts, a monthly maintenance fee of €4 is being introduced on 1 July 2013.

Oh, no they di'int! Pack your bags, Ulser (see what I did there) seek to blag yer cash while 'benefiting' you with basic IT blunders that leave your account inaccessible for weeks.

Should rename to 'cool story bank'.

Do they charge monthly fees for using your laser/visa debit too? like transaction fees?

Is this one of those 'if you're too poor to deposit a huge amount of money every week, then we're going to charge you, you pov' things?

PTSB - Free and will pay up to €15 in interest per annum. Not huge, but better than the other way around.

However, if you pay €1,500 into UB every month then there isn't a charge. €1,500 isn't too hard.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,407 ✭✭✭lkionm

We have two waivers in place to help you avoid the fee. A waiver simply means that the monthly maintenance fee will not be charged to your current account once you meet certain criteria. You need to meet only one waiver to avoid the fee.

Would many of ye lodge/ get paid 3000 a month?

Or if you have 3k in the account all the time, which, for some people, may be a bit more difficult.

Yes it is, to anyone earning a small wage, it's €375 a week. I'm very glad for you that you have the best part of four hundred quid every week that you've nothing to do with, but for a lot of people it's a massive chunk of their wages.

Don't you need the 1500 for ptsb too?
That is pretty hard for some people (those on minimum wage don't get that much)
For most it is great and they should switch to there.

Over the course of the full year, they take 48 euro. I would like to know where you go for holidays on 48euro as that wont even fill my car with petrol.

Or go for the ufirstgold account and for €14 per month get annual travel and mobile phone insurance plus no charges.

Fantastic maybe this means i can finally close my Ulster bank account. Was working it down with the intent of closing it years ago until there was like 9 cent left in which they wouldnt give me as you need a certain amount to be able to withdraw, then when i asked them to just close it and they said that it costs however much to close it which i wasnt arsed spending.
So anyway ive been receiving quarterly statements of how my 9 cents been doing for the past 8 years, needless to say it hasnt really appreciated any interest but im hoping with all this they might just let me close it at last sans any fee or maybe my 9 cent will cover it

May be of use to people, but I have a Ufirst account with Ulster Bank. They charge me a tenner a month, but I get other benefits. The main one is insurance on my phone, but there are others (25% off ticketmaster, etc)

    It's 3k, not 1.5k

Anyway it's 3k total, if you have savings or anytihng, you can switch them back and forth to hit the target

All banks charge quarterly fees, just Ulster Bank will do it once a month.

Still bet than AIB who charge you for everything possible.

That's a single wage, my partner stays at home with the kids. Lots of people earn over that amount.

As it is, like another poster on the thread, I pay a tenner a month for the uFirst account. You get benefits that are worth the money, I saved over €100 just on buying tickets from ticketmaster last year.

Is there anyway to avoid the AIB fees at all, or reduce them? I left the country and had free banking with AIB (if you used your laser card once a month or something like that), returned after a few years and have started getting fee letters from AIB with ridiculous charges on them. I didn't realise fees had come back until I got this :(

So are there any banks left with no fees ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 126 ✭✭FamousSeamus

If you have an old TSB account there are no fees and no conditions.

The rest, only if you have a certain amount in your account or a certain amount lodged that month. One free bank account I have is a rabo direct savings account, something like 2.5% interest and can withdraw any time, they gave me 30 euro to open it. no visa with that kind of account however (can use paypal).

"Bank in charging for providing a service shocker!"

I don't think you really understand what banks do with your money. They dont keep all your money locked in a safe.

They keep 10% of it and use the other 90% to creating loans each with a 10% reserve. So if you lodge 100 into the bank, they hold 10 and use the other 90 for loans, so creating money.

Ridiculous if you have to be doing transfers every month to avail of free banking,

Why cant they just take all your accounts into consideration and apply the waiver then?

It is a business though? They are providing you with a service so why not charge? Would you charge someone for your services? People are weary to deposit money they dont have anymore so they cant give out that many mortgages or loans so they arent gettin as much revenue as they previously were so they need to generate some! Hence why you shall be charged for the use of their services, kinda makes sense?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,814 ✭✭✭TPD

Just off the web chat to them, their advice is to ring and ask someone who knows the answer.

Nope but it was explained to me before as I was in shock when I recieved my first charge after being a student, was in oz and my account had a monthly 10 dollar charge which I couldnt comprehend and that was the way it was explained to me....alternatively you could store your money in a matress for free?

The old chap got an email yesterday relating to the €4 charge.

If you are over 60 you will not be paying the €4 monthly fee

Boo hoo, most German banks charge something similar. Irish people seemed to have been a little spoiled with their banking last decade.

Perhaps .. But that's over now ... Now it's time to get lubed up and prepare to take it where the sun don't shine without even the common courtesy of a reach around. This 4 euro charge is just foreplay.

Why ? If anything, someone over 60. So they use my money to make money and now they want me to pay them money on top of the money they make off my money. **** off will ye.

Banks already make money from having your money in them in the first place, if only people would always switch to the cheapest

Well I guess we're officially part of Germany now? I believe it's wrong in any country considering we already pay for every transaction or service we use.

They don't even keep our money in the banks, they give it to other people for loans. So they make enough money from the interest on that.
