I just had a quick look at the Ryder Cup table. A win for Wiesberger would move him onto 177.70 points on the World Points List. Projected points for those currently in 8th, 9th and 10th position based on their current placing in the PGA are as follows:

    8 Graeme MCDOWELL 166.99+2.30=169.29
    9 Jamie DONALDSON 165.01+13.00= 178.01
    10 Luke DONALD 164.30+3.00=166.30

So a win would move Wiesberger into 9th place just behind Donaldson (or maybe 8th, just ahead of him depending on how Donaldson fares today), with McDowell and Donald moving down to 10th and 11th respectively.

Wow! That would be a turn up.

I thought McGinley almost admitted there on Sky that he would give Poulter a pick - I think he'd be right too.

Reading between the lines I think he'll pick Westwood too. He was on about how players like Lee, as leaders in the team room are so important, or words to that effect anyway

Drying up incredibly fast out there, which is great. That is some drainalge technology. It'll be interesting to see how long it takes to get them out on the course again.

I think McGinley will certainly give Westwood serious consideration for a pick. But it might be difficult to justify if McDowell, Donald and Poulter all fail to make the top 9.

I could justify giving poulter a pick considering how well he has played in the previous Ryder cups.

Absolutely. The point I was making was that it would be hard to justify picking Westwood ahead of any of Poulter, McDowell and Donald. However, if one or more of them qualify automatically, then Westwood must have a good chance of getting a pick, position in the Ryder Cup tables notwithstanding.

I think Luke Donald could be hard enough to justify as a pick.

Would this thread not be better suited for Ryder Cup talk ... http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2057156093

With the FedEx playoffs and Ryder Cup coming up together, it might get a bit muddled in here.

I'd have Donald in before Westwood but it looks like they will all get in as McGinley doesn't come across as the controversial type.

Going to take a win from the following group of Luiten, Jimenez, Gallacher, Molinari or Ilonen to upset the following 12 at this stage.
I cant see any of them getting a wildcard.

    McIlroy
    Stenson
    Victor
    Sergio
    Rose
    Kaymer
    Bjorn
    Donaldson
    McDowell
    Donald
    Poulter
    Westwood

Donald has a 70% success rate in the Ryder Cup (10.5 points out of 15) and is a lot closer to automatic qualification that Westwood. But I agree that there is a stronger case to be made for Poulter and McDowell than for Donald. A lot will depend on what happens over the next three weeks.

The final two automatic qualification places are very close, but I think Donaldson may sneak in via the European Points list as he is just under €28,000 behind Garcia and I presume Garcia will be taking part in the Fedex Cup playoffs and therefore won't be picking up any more European Points.

I guess there is also an outside chance that Bjorn won't make the automatic qualification places, but it would require an unusual combination of results for this to happen.

    I agree.

I had to jump in and say that because it looked like you were being ignored ;)

It's the Barclays next isn't it. Two weeks time if I'm correct.

McIlroy hasn't gone well in this in the past, I wonder will he be able to make a showing this time round?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,733 ✭✭✭SnowDrifts

Yeah it starts with the Barclays on the 21st. The FedEx Cup system has really been perfected over the last few years and they have it nailed now. It is a great climax to the season and everyone will be fighting hard for that $10,000,000 bonus check!

It would be some way to wrap up the season for Rory.

Yip...agree with that. Made me start looking on the web for green fees after watching it.

Kevin Sutherland looking to break 60 on the Champions Tour, short putt on 17 and par on 18 will see him score 58. Unbelievable golf.

FedEx play-offs start tomorrow with The Barclays. Good overview below of how the play-off system works for those unfamiliar.

Early double for McIlroy. Still wouldn't back against him finishing under par today.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,872 ✭✭✭abff

He's just had his first birdie of the day at the short par 4 5th. It would be nice if he could pick up another couple of shots over the remaining holes.

Stenson pretty much hit 17 out of 18 greens in regulation (gonna give him the first hole as he was on the fringe) and still managed to finish one over.

Was just looking at his stats there .... 83.33% GIR and -2.725 strokes gained putting! That's gotta hurt. Surprised it wasn't the putter snapped over his knee this time :D

    http://www.pgatour.com/content/pgatour/tourreport/2014/08/22/noh-assessed-two-stroke-penalty-for-hitting-from-green.html

"Noh assessed penalty for playing from wrong green"

Silly mistake, thought this rule would be obvious, I've been on a few wrong greens in my time.

while its not obvious (you can play off the correct green) its crazy for them not to know, especially a veteran caddy.

Idiotic mistake. Can't believe that between the two of them (caddy), they didn't know the ruling here. Say the green staff weren't best pleased.
