They should consider the amateur formats, 2 rounds of stroke to qualify, top 16/32 or whatever after that.

They could do that but it would dilute the stroke play element. The present arrangement has its flaws but they are still guaranteed two days of competitive golf, which is the same as any regular event with a two day cut. Even the "meaningless" matches today carry OWGR points and prize money.

I normally love matchplay, but hell, it's Friday, and I have no one I want to root for for the next three days!

If it wasn't for the Garcia v Rahm match tonight I probably wouldn't bother watching.

Casey v schwartzel will be worth watching too, winner take all in that one.

It used to be one of my favourite tournaments to watch but the group element has ruined it for me

Unfortunately some of the big names do and they are not willing to enter if they could be gone after one round.

Fair point, but why not call their bluff and see ? If they don't want to go after one round, its simple enough, win your match.

IMO they'd soon find out the event would go ahead and a winner will still be declared and very few would care about who didn't turn up.

You would see a substantial drop in viewing figures and that would affect advertising and sponsorship. You are forgetting that this is a business.

I wonder. Sure, in the days of Tiger when he brought massive viewing figures, it was a factor, but does anyone now, have that kind of impact ? I think the "star power" is more spread around these days. Golf was (very unfortunately) all about one man for a decade.
Obviously it's a business but I'm not convinced DJ or Rory or Speith losing early on would really hit viewing like a loss for Tiger would have done. Even look at the likes of Scott and Stenson not playing his week, I doubt viewing numbers are down for that. Just imo.

The current format was hammered out between the PGA, players, TV companies and main sponsors. Its a compromise but everyone gets paid and there is something to play for even in the dead rubber games (OK, the money for the minor placings probably doesn't matter to most of these guys but the ranking points do.)

It is a World GC event. Stenson, Day and Scott are probably not going to affect ratings in the US but they might in Sweden and Australia. The likes of Rory, Mickelson, Watson and DJ would be badly missed.

It is obviously timed as a lead in to the Masters in the hope of getting everyone there. Even then, a few missed it and if it was a one round and your gone situation, so would others.

Can someone remind me of how they sort out a group winner when two or more are tied on points?

Head to head I presume. Not sure what happens if that is halved.

    A playoff

    Sudden death?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,776 ✭✭✭redzerdrog

No head to head in this any more think it goes to some sort of playoff if tied

What just happened with Hatton ??
Was there not a new local rule adopted in Jan about accidentally moving your ball on the green ? Or am I thinking of something else ?

Edit, forget it, just saw the explanation on tv.

Was there not always a group element?

Nope, used to be straight knockout.

Nope it was straight knockout every year until fairly recently. Think this is the third year with the group format.

Is DJ on the verge of starting a Tiger like domination? Game looks unstoppable at the moment.

I used to think the same when Rory came along. Day was unplayable for a period too. Dustin at the minute. It just a revolving door of talent in golf these days.
An awful lot of it is thanks to TW though. The money is insane not to be picked up on when young fellas decide to pick up a club.

Joking about Rahm, he said "hopefully he'll maybe eat some gas station sushi tonight and be a li'l sick tomorrow!" ... and of course then that idiot Rob Lee jumped in, interrupted him while he was being entertaining, and talked all over him.

Rahm looks to be feeling the pressure. Still plenty of time to turn it around.

Nah, he's done. He'll be doing very well if he gets to play the 13th.
