suppose hypothetically speaking one had a deer slug barrel on a pump action and after measuring it it comes to 22inches ( 2 inches on the side of the ungodly) and if one could source an extended choke to cover the deficit...does this legalise the barrel?

Short answer is that nobody knows because the law's ambiguous and has never been tested in court or clarified by the Minister in further legislation. Does your licence cover sub-size-limit barrels that come from the manufacturer like that or is it null and void? Noone knows. Do removable bits like chokes or moderators or bloop tubes count towards barrel length? Noone knows.

You'll definitely get guesses allright, but those and a bit over two euro will get you a fancy cup of coffee...

its all hypothetical of course .......really. And hopefully it will never bother the Courts..ever!!!!

I for one would like to err on the side of caution and would not include removable bits like moderators, protruding choke tubes, flashhiders etc in the calculation of barrel lenght.

While Sparks is correct in that it is vague at best, the answer may be in the definition. The barrel.

Well a choke is not a part of a barrel. In that the barrel will function with ot without it so therefore it would not be classed (IMO) as a component part. It is an accessory for the gun that fits the barrel.

As said it's just my opinion.

    FWIW
Going by the UK and previous knowledge of this problem in Ireland..
IF the choke extension or whatever used to bring it up to length is permeantly affixed to the barrel.IE silver solderd, brazed and pinned, it is considered a permanent fixture and therefore part of the barrel length.

I remember this was an issue years ago here when the very few SPAS 12 shotguns were imported into the UK and ROI..
The barrel on them was 20 or 21 ins,and fortuneatly they have a threaded muzzle so they were sold from the dealers with 4in cylinder bore chokes brazed onto the threads. Then they fell foul of the "Idoanlikedelookodat" section of the Irish gun laws.

Plus the fact that they're an awkward heavy brutal yoke to operate:D

My reading of the op assumed that a slug barrel meant it would be rifled and ergo would fall under a minimum barrel length of 19 inches. If that was that case though it would be over .308 and a restricted firearm. :)

But the coolness look factor negates all that.:D
Cant belive I shot clays with one of them...Once.:P

the hypothetical barrel is a smooth bore with maybe a winchoke tube at the muzzle , it isnt rifled. it was hypothetically bought to deter zombies and insolvency bankers.

You do know that the hypothetical gardai and department of justice read these forums well hypothetically anyway.

This wouldnt be a hypothetical Winchester 1897 exposed hammer action pump gun be chance??:
Cos if it is, it would ruin its collector value by sticking any sort of a yoke on its end.You would be better off applying for the restricted liscense and having quite a valuable and historic gun.
If it is the standard Winchester deer slug gun which are a usual factory standard 20/21 ins usually a Mod 1200 or 1300 XTR. 22 ins is an odd length.
Then hypothetically getting a 2in choke tubeor better still,a Clect choke system brazed onto it should cover the legalities nicely.
