Live TV only on your home UPC network? Seriously, live TV is the main benefit of this app. If you can't watch live TV on the go then this has no benefit for me. I have my own 'on demand' content on my tablet and phone.

Does Sky Go have this restriction?

Yes, it's a shame the app can't be used outside the home as it's a nifty little app.

Has anyone tried using the app in another home with a UPC bb & tv subscription? The reason I ask is to see if usage is tied to a specific location based subscription or just to anywhere with UPC bb & tv services.

No I don't think it does. Think you have to register each device or something and then, is it limited to a certain amount? Anyhow that's whats needed.

It's hard believe some techy designer bloke sits in an office for months making these apps and when he's finished, says to himself "yep that's done....perfect"!

Yes it works. I tried it last night in a UPC BB home which is on a different package. I was able to stream TV channels, like HEAT which is on my subscription but not on theirs.

Yes worked for me on Chrome (not working at all on Firefox) in my mums house, logged in to both my account and to her account and it worked for both

Thanks, that covers both bases so (app & website versions).

Yes, I posted a video recently with one of UPC's top dogs discussing the very same second SSID etc. As Patrick points out it's an exciting development.

EDIT: And here's the link to the video http://lnkd.in/ftAHqC

Hang on... are you saying they'd enable a second SSID in my box that other UPC users could access to get online outside their own home?

    I bloody hope not!!!

because it would be using my bandwidth for others to access content.
Plus, I know it's probably very secure, but I don't think I'd be comfortable knowing other would have access through my network.

What about if they view content they shouldn't be. That would be against my IP address...

I hope it's an opt in is all and not a mandatory. I don't use the Wifi in the UPC boxes (or in the current Horizon box I have). i have my own wifi access point that I've more control over.

I think you're making some very negative assumptions there, but I'll leave it to someone with more technical knowledge to answer your concerns.

Let's try stay on the topic of the thread, but just to share my understanding: essentially, if you are a UPC customer, you can login to any location with a UPC box. This enables you to pull internet from the network, but not use the signal, if you will, from the actual customer themselves.

Eg. My friend and I are customers of UPC. He comes to my house to do some work. I have my internet (SSID 1). He can log into SSID 2 (coming from my router) and use the internet. The speeds for SSID (eg. my package) are kept for me, and SSID 2 only gives him the speeds he has paid for. They are completely separate. I could be completely (!) wrong, but this is what I think they are going for. Don't quote me! :)

    Anyway, back on thread.

Just tried this on my laptop and works great ..

Has anyone tried this on any of the newer Web tvs ?

I need to upgrade one of my TVs and this would be the ideal way to get rid of a mutiroom box and replace with webtv access ..

Will UPC not be setting themselves up for loss of revenue from multi-room subscriptions with this ? Or will be they be hoping on upsell from movies to offset ?

I have used the BT openzone access and it works brilliantly everywhere in the UK .. It is treated as an Opt IN default option, so if you get BT broadband , you automatically share your wifi (and get access to anyone else's wifi), unless you opt out. As well as UK access it also allows access to any fon hotspot worldwide http://corp.fon.com/
    Sorry for off-topic discussion ..

That sounds like a very reasonable option. If you share your bandwidth, you get to use others'.

The only danger - I downgrade to 50Mbps, and then use my neighbours' 100Mbps connection, thus getting 100Mbps for the price of 50. In my building, I probably have the choice of 3 or 4 UPC networks. :p (I'm joking, I assume there's some kind of limit to how much bandwidth the 'sharing' users can use.

Tried the iPad app, and it's pretty cool (free is always good). My only qualms:

    - The stream (particularly the on demand shows) stalled a LOT. Often could only play a few seconds before it stalled. Exiting out and trying again and it just resumed and stalled at the same point. "Killing" the app and relaunching it did seem to make a difference, but I'll keep an eye on it.

    - It's a pity you can't preview the movies. I know you have to buy them on a laptop first, but there's no harm in showing a brief 30 second preview.

    - Quite often, dragging to scroll through the movies just didn't work. I'd try a second later and it'd be fine, but it happened enough to be annoying.

Getting an error on my laptop "Sorry this video is only available if you are connected to your UPC broadband" Which I am, only thing is I use unblock-us DNS, would that be the issue? Using Firefox

Cant get this working on my Samsung Galaxy either, just keeps looping on the UPC sign, my phone isnt affected by the Unblock-us DNS change

Yes, you need to use the UPC default DNS. Same here, remove and it works. At first I thought it was my router, then realised it was the DNS.

Just tested the iOS app. Mine is jailbroken but xCon sorts out the issue with jb detection.

Can watch tv series and some live tv channels, rte, bbc etc.

    Pretty cool and fluid.
Was getting "size mismatch" on 3 attempts at download. Maybe server traffic. Anyway, got it now. Working well.

Using an iMac. Video comes on for a nano second and then get an error message:

    An error occurred

Sorry, the video cannot be played at this time.

    any ideas lads

Any UPC loss in revenue from customers removing their multirooms will be made up from the selling on of the old multiroom boxes/ reduction in stock of boxes, reduced call outs for repairs/ setups, and as someone else pointed out, more chance of people buying content. They may even get more people upgrading their broadband to 100Mb if they have loads of devices connected.

The solution here - http://support.upc.ie/app/answers/detail/a_id/532 - works for me but only on Safari, not on Firefox.

The instruction to "Ignore the message that a newer version is available" isn't a once-off mind you - it pops up all too often.

That worked for me. But that pop-up is getting annoying now. It's non-stop! Very very annoying.

ahh this is great. Really enjoyed being able to watch MOTD2 last night on the laptop while the missus watched something else on the box. Great stuff. well happy with it.

I think that's the best 'use case', the iPad/laptop as a second TV. I don't think many will use the app over their big TV at home. But for example I was playing on the 360 and had the iPad app showing the CNN Boston coverage at the same time, quite handy.

To use Horizon App a person must be able to access a UPC network!

So if I'm out where no upc wifi is available it means horizon is unusable.
    Its counter intuitive.

With Sky Go I can access their channels on any wifi network.

Seems Sky is still setting the standard.

Will this decision be reversed for the full launch?

Having been working away from home last week end, the Horizon service is useless when compared to Sky Go.

I fail to see any real attraction if I can't use it away from home.

Without access via other wifi networks its a dead duck!
