killing to be made in mullingar

There is money to be made in opening a gym in Mullingar . There is no decently equiped gym here and lots of people iv spoken to both inside and outside any of the 2 frankly dreadful gyms here all say the same . The Mullingar park hotel is more a leisure centre that hasnt even got a bench press for gods sake its just full of cardio equipment and a handfull of machines and its around 600 euro per year ! The other is flex which has a decent variety of equipment but the place and all the equipment are both in bits and in some cases dangerous . I wrecked my elbow on the cable crossover because the cable has been replaced by a rope making it stiif and unpredictable . Someone please put the town of mullingar out of its fitness misery and open a decent well equipped place to work out . If you had 300 members at 300 euro each thats 90k !

Would be making huge losses at €90k. Even a fairly basic place. IMO get some people together (local adverts/forums) and set up a barbell club. Someone might have space a few people could use.

Podium gym. Look it up on facebook. It's a weightlifting club but I think they cater for general training now too.

not really a killing to be made

Park Hotel and Bloomfield hotel have gyms
    then there's flex gym

    and a lifting club

then rugby club have their own gym, as do many GAA clubs

Rates, maintenance, tax, accountancy fees, sundries, slow take up to membership when opening, marketing, 300 peeople membership you would have to employ somebody else for insurance purposes I would imagine. Alot more goes on behind the scences that you just dont cater for in a simple calculation

Your not taking into account existing competition (Not matter how bad, people just 'like' a place etc) and population (Only 20k or so in Mullingar) Gyms make most of their money from the January and Summer rushes to 'get fit' After that they practically have no income. And you would need to employ competent people to comply with insurance regulations and they deserve a fair wage.

I think an insured, not for profit club would be a better scenario.

Im not well up on the expenses of doing business but if these other well below standard gyms in mullingar can stay open then a well run gym can do very well . Im sure people just dont bother because of the poor standards here .

The cost of kitting out a gym with good machines, some free weights (say a half decent set of dumbbells and a tonne of plates), and cardio equipment is astronomical... (Commercial treadmills can cost 10-15k a piece)... even making 90k a year through membership, and excluding the running costs, insurance, rates, rent, staff pay, things like IMRO fees, accountant fees, and the other billion things that cost money, like advertising, bin collection, stationary, VAT on the memberships, soon to be water charges, etc etc etc.... you'd be waiting a long time to see a return on your investment

I know it's on a different scale but the owner of felda gym in Dundalk has 10 million in the place

You would NEVER see a return at that rate.

This is one of the most bizarre threads ever. 90k gross, a killing?! Nah. Maybe multiply it by 10x and you'd start to have a reasonable expectation of making some money.

That place looks like a carbon copy of Westpoint in Blanchardstown.

Yeah it looks scarily similar in layout to the Carlisle Ben Dunne Gym as well. Seems to be much better equipment though along with an "assessment centre", a nutritional therapist and a few other things.

Just about every post in this thread has made me laugh uncontrollably...the kind of dangerous laughing where you are choking on your own saliva and hyperventilating.

I'll leave this thread to you and others here that are operating facilities in Ireland...but maybe one day I will post an 'Idiots Guide to Gym Ownership' if for no other reason than to open peoples eyes a little. I don't think there is any other idiot better qualified.

I've made more money just this year from my consultancy and seminar work than I ever made from my gym and this work is my sideline to my ACTUAL job.

Suffice to say anyone that goes into the gym business to 'make a killing' should be investing as much in a therapist as they do in their accountant.

Just as a matter of interest what type of consultancy or seminars do you give ?

If you stay in the fairways hotel next door (which is cheap to stay) they have an arrangement with felda. It's top class kept to a high standard with equipment and hygiene.

Have two main areas...1. What I've always previously done i.e strength and conditioning and 2. Training and seminars in the 'security' area.

I also laughed at your post saying you would post an "idiots guide to gym ownership " when by your own admission your gym doesnt make any money lol . I hope your seminars dont include anything to do with making it in business or common decency because the first thing you did with your first post was to insult everyone and maybe thats a reason why noone wants to attend your gym YOUR ATTITUDE I wouldnt give you my money .

No but saying your going to post " an idiots guide to gym ownership " when you cant get your own to turn a decent profit does make one look awfully silly especially after "laughing uncontrollably the kind of laughing that makes you choke on your own saliva and hyperventilate " the combo of the two quotes is just priceless lol

Anyway, I train at felda in dundalk and it's amazing, the 10million figuire does not surprise me at all. Every 6 months they get some new equipment. Their last update they got another set on dumbbells up to 50kg, a new squat rack and 7 new benches, tbf they needed it with the influx of new members when jjb closed down.

Few people are members of 2 or more gyms. (Several people in the place I go to train else where too.) Do you see a market for Ben Dunne down there or a 'big box' cross fit type place or what?

    :( you make Will saaaad.

You kind of sort of missed the point of the joke...could everyone reading this thread please turn away to minimise dor843088's embarrassment when I explain the joke to him...thank you.

I will do this slowly for you because you are obviously a little slow on the uptake.

I said I would write the 'Idiots Guide to Gym Ownership'....I am the 'idiot' get it? I am saying and implying that I was an idiot for opening a gym in Ireland. That there was no better qualified idiot. What bit of that do you think makes me sound superior. Was it the bit where I called myself an idiot? Does idiot mean something different where you come from?

Now...just to clarify a few points that you raised in your post:
    1. No, my seminars and consultancy don't include anything to do with common decency or business. Although I think I am better than most on the common decency front and I am getting better but never was and never have been great at the business side because it never interested me. Thankfully I have someone who loves business taking care of that now.
    2. Regarding the first thing I did in my post was to 'insult' EVERYONE. That is plainly false and untrue. Firstly, to be insulted their needs to be some kind of factual basis to the insult for instance if someone said to me 'get back to the bog you culchie ginger' I wouldn't be insulted because a) I am not from Offaly b) I am not a farmer and c) I don't have red hair. Therefore I would not be in the least bit insulted. So I am sorry for whatever misfortune or mental or physical disfigurement you suffer from that caused you to be insulted by my post but it is pretty clear to me that EVERYONE was not insulted by it as you were.
3.Reagrdining my gym in Ireland. a) lots of people did want to come to it. b) it did actually make money....just not enough. c) when we shut up shop it was actually doing better than it ever actually had. d) like lots of small businesses in Ireland we were put in difficulty by our clients not paying their bills. So our mistake was in extending credit in this particular case. e) I don't think you will ever see the case again where the 3 of the top 4 club teams in any county will be training in the one facility. f) I still get emails from people stating that their personal bests were all still standing from their time in IP and they've not been able to achieve again what they did then. So I think it is a little disingenuous of you to say that no one wanted to attend my gym because of my attitude.

I hope whatever got you so upset heals up.

He never said 3 out the best 4 in the whole country currently,

No Im not slow . No I dont suffer from a mental or physical disfugurement and Im glad every post made you laugh uncontrollably and choke and hyperventilate . And I apologise for saying you insulted anyone that was a clear attack on your character sorry about that . I read your blog about how your ego gets in the way and how you like to crap on and moan , it shows in your huge self indulgent posts that you obviously like to hear yourself talk , i guess that explains the seminars . You will obviously want the last word so have at it just try and keep it shorter than a novel and stop wasting both our time .

Are you sure? Maybe you are just so slow you don't even know it...I'd say that's the problem.
No I dont suffer from a mental or physical disfugurement
Are you positive? A lot of parents don't like to scar their kids by making it obvious to them that they're 'different'? Maybe you should sit down with your folks?
and Im glad every post made you laugh uncontrollably and choke and hyperventilate .
It did...it was very very funny.

Ohhhhhhhh....I only just realised it was you that started the thread....LOL. That is even better. No wonder your bottom was so sore and you were swinging for the fences. I didn't realise that you were the one that didn't actually have a clue what you were talking about and thought if you generated 90K you'd be 'killing it'...now I really do feel like an idiot....obviously not as big an idiot as you are in real life but I do feel a little foolish.
And I apologise for saying you insulted anyone that was a clear attack on your character sorry about that .
Don't worry. Like I said...there has to be some element of truth or reality in what someone is saying and you clearly don't have any idea what you are talking about so believe me....nothing you have to say or have said means anything to me at all....even less so since I realised you were the OP.
I read your blog about how your ego gets in the way and how you like to crap on and moan , it shows in your huge self indulgent posts that you obviously like to hear yourself talk , i guess that explains the seminars .
This is the only thing you've had to say that actually makes any sense.
You will obviously want the last word so have at it just try and keep it shorter than a novel and stop wasting both our time .
Ohhh no...happy to let you keep talking all you like...it only further inflates my ego.

How about this...how about anyone that agrees with you and thinks that I am a blowhard with nothing to add to this forum thanks your post? Anyone that wants me to stay just for pure comedic value and because they like looking at threads where someone tries to 'take me down' and it ends up being like watching a train wreck in slow motion...thanks this post....this better be thanked by all the people who've emailed and or PM'd me to have their questions and got answers in the past week :)

We can give it a week and see where we stand. Quite frankly if everyone agrees with you...then I'll go back to lurking here and leave the forum to more intellectual and enlightened folks like yourself. If people 'like' this post and think having a ego maniac who loves the sound of his own voice and making self huge self indulgent posts like this one...then I will try my best to ignore your cutting and chilling insight into me and my fragile personality :)

A friend of mine has trained in there a few times with his rugby team and wasn't impressed at all - apparently very little floor space for DLing etc. and they were actually told to quieten down a few times just for throwing out the odd grunt on a PR.

Suppose it depends what you're after, but I'd say The Strong Room is a much better spot with regards to Dundalk.

Are you sure? Maybe you are just so slow you don't even know it...I'd say that's the problem.

Are you positive? A lot of parents don't like to scar their kids by making it obvious to them that they're 'different'? Maybe you should sit down with your folks?

It did...it was very very funny.

Ohhhhhhhh....I only just realised it was you that started the thread....LOL. That is even better. No wonder your bottom was so sore and you were swinging for the fences. I didn't realise that you were the one that didn't actually have a clue what you were talking about and thought if you generated 90K you'd be 'killing it'...now I really do feel like an idiot....obviously not as big an idiot as you are in real life but I do feel a little foolish.

Don't worry. Like I said...there has to be some element of truth or reality in what someone is saying and you clearly don't have any idea what you are talking about so believe me....nothing you have to say or have said means anything to me at all....even less so since I realised you were the OP.

This is the only thing you've had to say that actually makes any sense.

Wheres all this anger and insults coming from bro? Jesus . Im sure you have tonnes to add to the forum . Nobody is trying to "take you down " . Other posters enlightened me as to 90k wouldnt even turn a profit in a friendly positive manner and thats cool but you post insults and negativity. Maybe your a cool bloke but you certainly didnt come accross in this thread . And Im not interested in your hands up who likes me best game . Oh and by the way my folks are brown bread but thanks for your comment .

No, it definitely didn't come from Jesus but I know that lots of people do get angry over him....but not me.
Im sure you have tonnes to add to the forum .
    I wouldn't go that far.
Nobody is trying to "take you down " .
Not even the CIA or something? Are you sure?
Other posters enlightened me as to 90k wouldnt even turn a profit in a friendly positive manner and thats cool but you post insults and negativity.
Other posters pointed out the blatantly obvious...I just pointed out that it made me laugh.
Maybe your a cool bloke but you certainly didnt come accross in this thread .
I am certainly not cool....so not surprised it didn't come through.
And Im not interested in your hands up who likes me best game .
Neither am I...I was just playing up on your whole 'you're a whole self obsessed ego maniac thing who likes the sound of his own voice'. I hate popularity contests because I always lose.
Oh and by the way my folks are brown bread but thanks for your comment .
    No worries. Happy to help.
