Crazy miles but that just adds to the character of the car tbh. Nice bus for the money.

No NCT but it has over 7 months tax on it. i'd say they tried the NCT and it failed, question is on what it failed. Could be a good fixer upper. Still a truly great car.

Ah, sorry I read that as NCT until 2014. Its a nice car though, but definitely does not belong here. Fixer upper, I guess.

Of course, but the mileage on the 04 car could turn some off completely regardless of how it drives.

Its an interesting delimma for sure.

If the 04s in decent order - I think id have that - because I like the X350 shape.

Yeah, I'd like the newer model too if it was okay, and the mileage wouldn't put me off. But it may put some off, hence the question.

Okay, a few more to offer.

    1990 Nissan Bluebird
    1.6 Petrol, manual
    110k Miles
    NCT 10/14, no tax
    €1200
This would make a nice daily driver imo. Reasonable to tax and insure and reliable. Always thought the vents at the rear quarter on these were cool when these were new.

    1979 Lada Niva
    1.6 Petrol / LPG, manual
    78k Kms
    NCT exempt, tax 8/14
    €2250
Beats a Freelander :P Cheap tax and it runs on LPG.

Throw on a 141 plate and you could sell it as a new car... Because they are selling them as new cars! :p

If a Niva doesn't float your boat...

    1977 MG BGT
    1.8 Petrol, manual
    26k Miles (?)
    NCT exempt, tax 11/14
    €2100
Something a bit more interesting than the MG TFs posted a few pages back, around the same price too. Modern seat belts for every day usage and its had lots of recent work done.

Ive actually looked at the 97s ad more closely rather then a quick glance of the pic on this tread.

I think id be inclined to have the 97 afterall - as it still looks like a very very nice car imo.

My thinking would be - id get into an X350 at a later stage - would rather a different colour combo and - errm id get to own 2 Jags instead of one (not at the same time :D).

Not really bothered about the mileages on both though - 240,000 miles is just a figure on the clock in my eyes - the condition is more important.

In fact I wish the 97 had more then the 118,000 miles it has on the clock tbh :D

I'm really in two minds on the XJs.

The mileage doesn't concern me, and I like the newer model a lot, but the older model looks very nice.

I'm really finding it hard to choose between the two.

I would guess that it is 126,000 miles on the bgt rather than 26. The clock will go back to 0 after 99,999.

Good looking bodywork on it but still bring a magnet with you along with your floor poking screwdriver! Crying out for a chrome bumper conversion...

It does look extremely well though you would need to thread carefully. Just looking back, maybe its not really bangernomics?

I actually couldn't give a toss about the mileage either - in fact I like the sound of 240,000 miles as it means im a bit nearer to 300,000 miles - I quite fancy writing the post on here along the lines of

"Todays section of the continental road trip went marvellously well - the silver lady clocked up 300,000 miles while cruising along at 100 mph on a perfectly nice and quiet German autobahn.

Could I just say (again) that 520d ownership is horrendously overated ha ha"

But judging by the pics it does look like the 97 might be a bit nicer condition wise.

Unfortunately - I won't be faced with that delimma in reality :(

Can it be purchased for €2000 or under and be driven daily? I think yes (provided you do small milage, if you're looking to do 50,000 miles a year… not so much :pac:)

Well the 3 point seat belts are a plus for using it daily, and I'd imagine atleast €100 could be knocked off. I guess if you want to use it daily you'd probably have to know a bit about owning a classic.

Would there be any more maintenance involved in owning it over something a bit more modern?

In all honesty - for daily driving - stuff from the 1980s is plenty far enough to be going back.

Id say a decent 1980s car - ie early Carina IIs and stuff would still be capable daily drivers if minded well.

Volvos and older Mercs like 190 Es are probably the way to go if you want a classic that is suitable for daily driving.

Something like the 240 estate that was on this tread a day or 3 ago - or even something like an E34 BMW 5 series.

But maybe my views are clouded slightly be the fact that I really don't get the big hoo ha about MGs in the first place.

Too many superior cars to consider imo - both classic and modern - before even thinking of an MG.

Im still glad the MG was put up however - id like to stress that bit.

Im just not a fan of them tbh

Of course. I was just thinking it would make for something interesting, over the likes of an MR2, if thats what you wanted.

I think the colour combination is smashing, and the ad states it has had lots of work done recently.

I've posted two 240 estates and a 940 estate in this week. Other than those there isn't anything hugely exciting that I can find at the moment.

Personally I think stuff from around 87 onwards could be driven daily, and anything older would probably need a bit more maintenance than usual with bodywork and the likes; parts might start to get scarce then too.

Sorry if I sounded like I was been critical of you putting up the MG - im glad it was put up.

Nice to see a variety of cars to keep the tread interesting.

If it was nothing but 00 or 02 Avensises - it would get boring quickly I think (no disrespect meant to Avensises :D)

    Not at all.

I suppose its nice to have a classic thrown in every once in a while :)

Thinking about having a look at it tomorrow. Ad seems very honest. Seem's like it's all fixable at a reasonable price

no tax, 6 months test. 14 year old boggo spec 1.6 petrol passat with 150k miles and an extensive list of faults.

worth half the asking price tops imo. you'd easily spunk another 4/ 500 correcting the faults and still have a **** car. i'd hold out for something better if i were you.

Thanks for the advice. Think I'll give it a pass so. I was expecting it to come in a lot less for repairs.

Dilemma: Do you buy the fresh looking, low mileage, newly NCT'ed, 1997 XJ or do you buy the high mileage, short NCT'ed, 2004 XJ?

    http://cars.donedeal.ie/cars-for-sale/jaguar-xj-series-3-2-litre-petrol/5999535

Very simple you go for the 2004 Xj, completely different , more modern car , built using very advanced aluminium construction! meaning it's actually lighter then the smaller S type, leading to easily achievable mid 20's mpg ,as against 15 or 16 mpg on the 97, less strain on auto box , no nikasil problems, faster , better handling, safer. Drive both models , you'll soon see the difference.

    Good stuff.

On Nikasil - was that just a V8 issue - only - I though the dash on the 97 we are looking at was the X300 type dash - meaning this one was a 6 cylinder.

I thought the XJ8s (X308) all had the newer type dash
