Have used them, and they were good. However i found they tended to "mushroom" instead of fragmenting, and passed through the deer.

I switched to ballistic tips and the problem all but stopped.

In 150gr try interbod, GMX or SST.

If you can source A-max in 155 or 168 gr go for them. they are classed as atarget round, but are ballistic tipped, and absolutely deadly on deer. Penetration is great, but it dumps all it's energy almost immediately, and have never had a through and through with them.

Same as above. When I had the 308 I preferred the Winchester silvertip. They didn't pass straight through like some of the others. Unless your shooting reds the 308 can over penetrate at times and they run for a good few hundred yards.

Have had pass through s with the Hornandy switched now to Sako Hammerheads 150Gr,not tried on deer yet but getting very impressive groups with them.Thought the SST's did too much meat damage too the deer I shot.

I also use hammer heads and cannot praise them enough. Used most the other rounds and always got runners even wit a perfect shot. Since changing I have not had 1 runner yet they have all dropped on the spot. I found federal fusion gave the most runners, the bullet must not flatten quick enough and pass through as I never found a bullet in 1 carcass using them.

I used Hornadys GMX on the deer. I think they are the best of the Hornadys also the best round I seen used on deer. Its the deepest penetrating round made by Hornady and does little meat damage all depending if you dont hit bone but they will always exit no matter if it hits bone or not, so back stop is a serious must! Copper or the rare brass rounds will penetrate better than lead core tips. You certainly wont have a runner with GMX but they are very expensive, dearest round made by Hornady but you pay for what you get

In 308, I find the 150g Hornady SST great. I haver tries the Hornady GMX, and they are great also. But to be honest I could not see the difference between them on the animals, so could not justify the additional cost.
You will find either great once you do your bit.

I'd agree 100%. The GMX definitely has deeper penetration as I've yet to find the round lodged in the animal after hitting bone. GMX always make an exit. SST is a great round, hear great reviews on them

Thanks Lads. Alot of you seem to be recommending the sst. I was always under the impression ballistic tips were a no-no for deer and soft points were best for penetration. But cant argue with results if they are working for ye. I should have rifle back during week, its being rebarreled at mo, so Ill try the 150 sst, 150spbt and 168 amax and see how they fly. Is there much differance between the 168 amax and 168 tap? There bc seems the same

I looked at the tap there. Looks like its a round designed with propellants are engineered to protect your night vision by minimizing muzzle flash. Copied and pasted of Hornady site. I don't think tap is for game. 150 grain is pleanty loads. Less bullet drop, better fps and 150 is putting out enough energy for Elk never mind any deer we have in this country. I see now why your confused why you thought plastic tipped rounds were a no-no for deer. Some ballistic tipped rounds like V-Max are fragment rounds and explode on impact. Where SST, GMX and InterBond from the Hornady market don't explode/smash up which are really the only suitable plastic tipped rounds that should be use for deer.
