TBH it all depends on your super.

Homerhop is right. You really need to ask your FO/Super.

I subbed a .22 for a .223 no problem but I've heard of others who had to put in a new application.

I subbed straight from a shotgun to a .223 with no problems at all. Where abouts are you based. It all depends on the super

How are you related to the Super? :D

Never seen that done, never even heard of it being done. Doesn't come close to "like for like" unless s/he based it on the unrestricted for unrestricted basis. Even that's a stretch.

    Nice one though.

He's my father's uncles daughters son in laws cousins friend from primary school..... I really don't know how it worked but it did, wad just told to sub it in and it worked wasn't going to ask why or how, but it saved me 80 yoyos until next year after paying out on the rifle. So it really does just depend on the super.

Well, technically the 22LR, 17HMR, 223, 22-250, 220 Swift are all suitable for varmints (in different capabilities) so they should rightly be classed together IMHO.

Ireland was practically unique in prescribing 22-250 for deer from 1972 on and special ammo runs had to be produced for our market.

I agree and the wording of the guidlines state unrestricted for unrestricted as long as the good reason is the same and you dont intend to start shooting deer. There is no reason you cant sub a .22 you have for target shooting to a .308 for target shooting....

Ive been told any unrestricted firearm can be substituted for another unrestricted firearm regardless of calibre provided they still have good reason for having it.
But could someone sub a rifle they have for shooting fox for another and put down fox and deer as a duel purpose gun for a larger calibre like a .243? The good reason wouldn't have changed, it would still be for fox but deer would be added to the reason for having it?

You should be able to do that and for the most part it wouldn't be an issue but there is always that will say no.

I am also thinking of changing from .22 rim-fire to .223 centre. Have narrowed it down to two modles tikka t3 & remmington any advice on which one would be better? I would perfare to buy a quality rifle straight out instead of trading up slowly. Thanks shooters

    Two good choices, there.

The Remy700 is an excellent line of rifles. Little bit more expensive than T3, which is more workmanlike.

Sako also make some outstanding rifles, if you can run to the price.

Tikka would be my ever so slightly biased choice;)
