Could you not just root it and start playing with the SIM unlock protection?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 908 ✭✭✭skaface

Is this phone only going to be available on Meteor, or will Vodafone be selling it also??

512 mb RAM is totally insufficient. My first Android the HTC Desire had this and totally limited the number of apps I could install until I put on a custom rom with ext sd capability

Perhaps I'm missing something - are you confusing RAM with internal storage?

This has 4GB internal memory (2.4GB user memory) before needing to offload stuff to external storage.

Larger capacity than the G300 so that's odd to hear. [Link]

I'm using a Sony j at the moment which also has 512 mb ram and its crap. If you have the browser open and then go to contracts it will take 5 seconds to load them. But the battery lasts 2 days.

Is it basically a g330 with firmware update (battery hungry one) and slightly bigger battery?

Hope they fix the firmware and release it for the g330

Let me know how you get on, I would do that myself if it works ok.

Is this just an online offer or can i walk into a store and get it ?

The g300 has 512 and it runs ICS fine, also JB..

The ZTE Blade, and most phones before this year have 512, also most China, unless you pay extra.

Android memory management is good and can be improved with V6 Supercharger.

People need to be proactive with Android, you need to get to know the OS to get best results.

Picked mine up, does it need a big initial charge before i power it up ?

I remember phones i had years ago needed 8 hours of a charge before use

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,248 ✭✭✭Qwerty?

I'd probably use it until the existing battery charge runs out, then fully charge it until its at 100%. Not sure if this is correct procedure.

BTW: Initial impressions on the Y300?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,302 ✭✭✭Supergurrier

It seems pretty good, i find it abit fiddly to use as it's my first smartphone but the sound and features are impressive.

I have no idea how apps and all that stuff works so will look into that. Camaera is ok but im not overly impressed alot of red eye and blurring when someone is moving (tried to get a picture of my puppy that never stands still haha :) When it's focused and held still it's impressive though

That is what I would do but do not allow it to fully discharge, like I would not go below 10/15% before connecting.

There is no conditioning required with modern Li-ion batteries, but the phone itself will have stats which it uses to figure out battery levels and it may require a few full cycles before it reports correctly.

To preserve battery it is best to turn of sync until you run an app, like Gmail or Facebook or G+... Sync manually.

Also, use 2G until you actually need 3G.

Allow wifi to turn off when phone is on screen off and at night, unless you have a reason to keep it on!

Turn off GPS and Bluetooth until you need them.

    Deep sleep is good!!!

Keep screen brightness as low as is comfortable.

CPU Spy is a good app to check this.

Also Better WiFi OnOff if your phone simply will not go into deep sleep mode.

I have given links before to XDA free versions of these apps.

    Giyf!!

If you need further information, just ask!!

I was enquiring about good budget phones in carphone warehouse on Sunday and the guy in there said the huawei phones are great and they never have any problems with them. They only stock the g300 in there, 2 models behind the y300, and he said if you can get the y300 for 129 to snap it up. They don't sell it in the meteor store either do they? I think it's just an online offer

Oh ok must have a look in there next time

Ok I am definitely going to get this phone or the huawei g510 from vodafone, and then get it unlocked for 5 euro. The thing is, which one is better? They both cost 129 (g510 is 149 but 129 if you switch to vodafone from another network), the g510 has a 4.5 inch screen compared to 4 on the y300 and has a 1.2Ghz processor compared to 1Ghz on the y300. It'd be less hassle for me to just go into meteorm get the y300 and thats it but I'd go through the extra effort of using a spare sim card to change to vodafone on, get that one unlocked and put in my meteor sim if it was worth the hassle.

    Opinions?

Their Sim Only Classic Flex Max plan is another great option if you not so much of a texter. Its €20.33 a month and includes 350 flexi units.

And if you install Cabbage, you can send your 333 free webtexts from the phone as well:)

I'd switch from meteor purely due to my awful coverage but everyone I text or call regularly is on meteor so it'll end up costing me more really

See if theres a sports mode preset. Usually helps.

So anyone purchase this phone yet?

I've one coming during the week and I'm wondering if it's any good.
If it's anything like the g300 then it will offer great value for money.
    G300 is an underrated phone.

Surprised to see the y300 ships with jellybean, should be interesting!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2 ranger2k11

I bought this phone over the weekend. I really like the look and feel of it. Jellybean seems very handy on it.

The one thing I will say, is in relation to Huawei Emotion UI. I have installed a Play Store UI enhancement called Nova Launcher. It works, but seems kind of buggy on this phone. I've used it on Samsung models before this and it seemed far more sure of itself.

If I download an app from the Play Store, it brings up notifications of a full home screen, referencing the Emotion UI homescreen, even though i'm not using it anymore. The Gallery has crashed a few times too. Just little bugs so far, but i'm looking to root the phone. I've emailed Huawei for the unlock code and they replied promptly enough. Just need to do some research as to what custom firmware to install.

Any tips welcome! If you have any questions about the phone, ask away!

I bought this Huawei y300 phone the other day actually. It really is great value for money. The screen is very decent and and clear as a bell. Even with 512mb of ram jellybean is running snappy. No problems with anything really other then a slight slow down if your multitasking too many things. For example using viber aswell as listening to music and browsing. Its tolerable though. Google maps and navigation are flawless. There is even a led notification light and ambient light sensor. For €99 you can't go wrong with it. Spec V price there is nothing that can match it. Its even got a dual core processor.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,302 ✭✭✭Supergurrier

I'm loving mine battery with everything will only last a day and a half at best.

Nav and Bluetooth as said above are flawless

Picked one of these up today and it seems like a solid little phone. I'm fortunate to have an S4 for work and bought it to replace a HTC One V as my personal phone. That was my second and sadly last HTC phone. They are great pieces of kit but seem to just stop working properly. I had a Hero on which the screen went mental and with the One V the capacitive buttons stopped working- a known fault.

So I've only had the Y300 a few hours but call quality is better than the S4. The interface is not as odd as some reviews have alluded too although I can't seem to remove apps from their respective screens as it seems to think I want to delete the app.
It's speedy, screen quality is good and it feels quite solid in the hand. Providing nothing fecks up this looks like being an excellent budget smartphone.

One thing to watch out for is the speaker: I've had a problem recently with people unable to hear me typically 9 to 10 mins into a call and I have to turn the Loudspeaker on and off in order for them to hear me again. The thing is I can hear them perfectly. It only applies to phone calls: skype and viber aren't a problem with it. It's not a huge thing (unless its an emergency for directions or something) but something to be aware of nonetheless.

Edit: They're also gone down to €80 on Meteor. They're a bargain at that price.

Hi guys I'm wondering if you can help me out. I purchased this phone from Amazon.co.uk for a work colleague and the seller was in China and it took over a month to get here, but that's another story for another day.
Anyway the problem is there is no playstore icon and when I access the playstore through the browser it says no device recognized.
There is two app stores on the device, one called app Centre and the other wostore, the app centre is useless and while the wostore has most apps all the menus and tags are in Chinese.
Is there any way I can get the playstore app on the phone for him because the whole process has been such a nightmare I couldn't make him go through sending it back to China.
And before anyone suggests it, I'm a small bit tech minded but don't have a clue about flashing custom roms or bootloaders or anything like that.
    Thanks

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,248 ✭✭✭Qwerty?

Do a search on modaco.com for details on unlocking the bootloader, and flashing a ROM. I've not massively Tech minded but have modded g300 and g510 in the last week following the instructions on that site with no problems.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 523 ✭✭✭Stormington

I've just unlocked the bootloader and I now have SuperSU on my phone. When I hold volume Up and Power I go into twrp version 2.5 (I think). Is flashing simply downloading the firmware (in my case I'm looking at B196) to my sdcard and opening it in twrp to replace the awful emotion UI with plain old google stock android?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,168 ✭✭✭TM

What ROM are you talking about?
    Post a link to it.
    It should come with instructions.
If it's a CWM/TWRP recovery zip then you copy it to your sdcard and then select it for installation in the custom recovery.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 523 ✭✭✭Stormington

Hey TM, I tried replying last night but typing this response on a phone was painful.

There is a B194 rom on Modaco here that I am interested in as he claims its stock android (call it the nexus experience I suppose). My question is with SuperSU installed on my phone, do I simply have to download the rom (600 mb+ o_0) and move it to my sd card, reboot the phone with volume + and power button held for 10 seconds and then open the rom with TWRP, which will install stock android on my phone in place of the emotion UI? Also, yer man has a zip file underneath it that says it removes the su binary? Any idea what that is about and does it have to be done before or after I download the ROM?

A few posts down in that thread a guy posts about master key exploits: Any idea what that refers to?

I have most of my stuff backed up but I've read horror stories about people forgetting to back up the emotion UI so when they try to factory reset back to the start they are unable to: how do I do that?

Not a techie at all so forgive all of the questions.
