Not sure what's so funny with the amount I wrote.
I said it's worth nearly nothing.
Considering its got an nct then surely it would help someone in a bind until it runs out and then sell it for scrap if the person wanted.
Has over 300e km on it I believe.

12 year old Almera, 300,000kms, no service history, central locking broken, power windows broken, dead battery, you'd be lucky to get €500. You'd be lucky to get €50 tbh. If you look at donedeal, there's an infinite amount of 2003 Almeras with short NCTs for €5-600 and a lot of the ads are ancient. They aren't desirable in good shape so a clapped one is worth virtually zero, unfortunately.

Things may have been different if it was easy to insure so someone wouldn't mind fixing it up and thinking they might get another year or two out of it but the way things are, there are far better options out there for €500, in many respects.

    You're probably right.
As for the service history this is just my guess as I don't have many details at hand so I'd rather be pessimistic than say porkies.
The fob and window (only passenger) were broken before Xmas so not sure if it was repaired or not.
As I said, I'm just seeing if there would be any interest in it at all and the amount I wrote was a complete guess.
I'd think of the fob and window were working then 500 could be a reasonable starting point.
Besides you mention 03 Almeras with short tests for 5/600 so me saying an 05 with a 7 month nct isn't all too bad.
Even if they got 400 I'd say it was good going.

I'd try to get some life back into the battery, give it the cleaning of a lifetime, pump the tyres and top up fluids etc, take some good photos and emphasise the one owner from new aspect. Advertise at €449 and take any offer; even if it is a packet of tattoos and a ps2.

Would it not be worth more to your parents when they get back?

Fix the fob, regulator and battery - you're looking at few hundreds to fix it. And than few hundreds in the air for selling it. Really, not worth the bother, ditch it and forget about it.

Different story if you wanted to run it, might be worth the effort - but not if you want to sell it.

Goods points, might offer a free lap dance to any potential sale :D
It wouldn't no, they were mentioning recently to get rid of it.
They are back in Jan so they will probably look at simply buying a new one.
One thing could be to simply use it as scrappage but that would involve it being NCT'd again.. hoping it would pass anyway.

300k is good going for one of those, is it 1.5 or 2.2?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,900 ✭✭✭✭bear1

    1.5.
Yeah the mother was giving it everything it asked for. Think she bought it in Egans out in Tuam.

You might get €200 at the most for it (export),the gearbox was known for going in them(remember my brother taking one out before he scrapped a 02 one with 80k miles around 4 years ago) but anyone that has one with a blown gearbox nowadays isn't worth fixing,so I don't think anyone will buy it for parts :/

Gearbox has never been an issue with it.

Gear linkage tended to wear and give a really loose feeling in the stick, but as you said, gearbox was never an issue.

Timing chain stretch was another issue, but personally I believe that was down to the Irish tradition of poor servicing intervals, I had one with pretty much same mileage as that above and the chain was solid.

If it's been lying up the thing I would be worried about would be the sills, they tended to rot around the back door, forward of the rear wheel arches, and bubbling there and now it's be worth scrapping.

Saying that, I've owned 3, pretty soul less but serviced regularly, they'll run and run.

You'd get one not needing that work for around that price though.

What are you worried about, sure the crank pulley is only €57 on eBay :pac:

In that ad I see photos of a car on a lift. Whenever I see photos like that, I deduct the seller is or has mechanic friends and could have fix this for peanuts.

So he gets the chains done and then for the sake of 90 pounds and an nct he decides to flog it. Yeah right.

Speaking of Yaris, trying to sell my "Red Rocket".

    €350 ono Swap for WHYG

Had it two years, flew through both NCT's.

Changed the air/oil filters and oil filter recently.
NCT and taxed till the end of the month.

No longer needed as I got another car.

Starter motor acting up, tap it and it goes.
Even have a spare starter motor to go with it.

Heres my own, in good nick, brother owned it from new. Full history, low miles, taxed & tested. Flywheel has started to make a chattering noise in neutral. Car is driving perfectly but clutch/flywheel would need doing soon.

Test expired in June - so if everything is so perfect why not throw a fresh test on it and make it a whole lot more saleable? You just know someone is going to come along and offer 500 quid for it as it stands using the lack of valid test as their reason.

    People make me wonder sometimes.
