Who has an IRFU contract?

I see from the Leinster press release that some players are on Leinster contracts while others are on IRFU contracts.
    1)Healy
    3)ross
    15)Rob Kearney

are the only three in that announcement.Cronin, strauss are not. assuming Best is on national hooker does that mean we only have 1 contracted nationally?
Toner and McCarthy aren't either. assume Ryan has one, is POC the other?
McFadden and Luke both featured in this years 6 nations and they haven't got one either.

Read IRFU had cut back on international contracts but they really seem to have cut it back to around 15 from the looks of things.Puts pressure on the provinces financially i would imagine.
Anyone know who else has them? D'arcy BOD would both have to have one i imagine.

    Healy(2016)

    Ross(2015)
    POM(2015)
    Kearney(2015)
    Trimble(2015)
    Bowe(2015)

    Best(2014)
    POC(2014)
    DOC(2014)
    Ryan(2014)

    Heaslip(2014)
    Darcy(2014)

    Earls(2014)

    Ferris(2013)
    BOD(2013)
    Wallace(2013)
    ROG(2013)

    Probably missing one or two.

SOB has turned down a central contract already afaik. Zebo and Earls are on Munster contracts. Toner on a Leinster one.

POM definitely has one, I think ROG is on one, Bowe has one as well AFAIK.

Zebo doesn't, he signed a three year provincial contract with Munster.

Trimble signed a two year national contract a few weeks ago.

    Ruddock surely doesn't have one?

Ruddock? Toner? Really? That's fairly surprising seeing as neither are guaranteed to start for Leinster.

Ruddock and Toner are not on IRFU deals.

Didn't know Trimbles contract was a national one. Bit strange considering he's fairly back in the pecking order

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 411 ✭✭LUPE

Forgot POM, James Downey and Isaac Boss

Yeah it was announced during the 6 Nations when he wasn't even being selected in the squad. Very strange...

They def don't have central contracts! I think you need to check your facts!

Downey and Boss are not on central contracts.

Downey is finishing the first of a 2 year Munster contract. Boss finishing the first of a 2 year Leinster contract.

What!? Downey and Boss? Are you sure? Boss is as bad as Trimble, but Downey makes absolutely no sense. He's nowhere remotely near the Irish squad.

It does all beg the question though about how they make the call on who gets them and why.

    EDIT: Just saw the responses.

Trimble has fallen right down the pecking order, so has DOC

Wallace and ROG surely won't get renewed for next season

Ferris is clearly in negotiations-thus the Japan rumour

Hard to believe POM gets one and SOB doesn't. european player of the year and likely lions tourist. POM lucky to be in and only there due to Ferris injury.

You would wonder how these negotiations/recommendations take place.
Like i'm not a murray fan but he is our best 9 and surely deserves a contract

SOB was offered a central contract but he turned it down. I'd say Murray will be offered a central contract when his current deal ends.

Contract up next year with Munster though.

does he really need to tap up the second half of his comment?

You were just throwing out names of players willy nilly.

There is no way a lot of the people on your list are on central contracts and you continued to include more.

This is all he is referring to by stating "Clueless."

    Healy(2016)

    Ross(2015)
    POM(2015)
    Kearney(2015)
    Trimble(2015)
    Bowe(2015)

    Best(2014)
    POC(2014)
    DOC(2014)
    Ryan(2014)
    Heaslip(2014)
    Darcy(2014)

    Ferris(2013) ??
    BOD(2013) ??
    Wallace(2013)
    ROG(2013)

If thats the correct list thats the 4 that are most likely going to be cut. Huge doubt over BOD and Ferris too...

So lets say 6 contracts not renewed (asuming they are keeping the same number of central contracts)

    I'd like to see

    Zebo
SOB (whether he wants to or not)
    Marshall
    Henderson
    Gilroy/Earls (maybe both)

    Edit : Murray

    signed up

    Hmm

Can't think of many more who would be in line for one then, barring renewls.

    Summary:
    LH:Healy
    Hooker:Best
    TH:Ross
    2nd row:POC/DOC/Ryan
    BR: POM/Heaslip/Ferris

    SH: none
    OH: ROG
    Centre: Wallace,BOD, D'Arcy

    Wing: Trimble, Bowe
    FB: Kearney

you would hope some restructuring takes place looking at this. Trimble getting a 2 year deal looks bizarre in these circumstances

I thought Earls signed a central contract at the same time as Leamy did back in 2012.

I'd agree with Henderson and Marshall getting ones as soon as they are due to renew. Both will be fixtures in the Irish side for the next decade barring injury. Henderson's is up in 2015, not sure about Marshall.

Gilroy i'm not sure about, lots of depth at wing. His contract is until 2016 aswell.

Ye Gilroy is debateable alright, I was just assuming if they were renewing central contracts tomorrow and guys were free to sign who would get one.

I edited my first post, I suppose Murray would be up there for one aswell now.

2013 Ferris BOD Wallace ROG Sexton
2014 Darcy Heaslip Ryan DOC POC Best Court Earls``
2015 Ross POM Kearney Trimble Bowe
    2016 Healy

By my count the above is the current situation

My guess is that Trimble got one because Gilroy and Zebo are on provincial contracts until 2016. Not saying it's right but maybe the IRFU thought they had one spare so lets use it to keep Trimble in Ireland.

What practical difference does it make whether a player is on a central or provincial contract? Say for someone like Sean O'Brien who's a guaranteed starter for both Ireland and Leinster anyway?

From what I understand, provincial contract players basically would get a smaller salary but appearance fees for Ireland, while central ones would have a larger salary but no appearance fee.

if a player is on an IRFU contract the province doesn't have to play anything for his services. hugely advantageous to have players on these contracts.

So when Leinster lose Johnny Sexton and have to pay out for the likes of Jimmy Gopperth it hits them financially doubly.

Sorry, that as well, I just mean't from the player's viewpoint.

Can't understand how SOB would turn down a central contract in favour of a provincial one. Is that fact or just hearsay?

Was Sexton not on one till this summer?

Murray's current contract is up at end of this season and I haven't seen anywhere that he has signed a new deal. I wonder if it will be another Munster one or if it will be a central one when he signs.
I read somewhere that the IRFU where cutting down o the amount of central contracts.

It's true. I think I remember Darcy saying he made more when he was dropped to a provincial contract due to appearance fees as he was still playing every match. Maybe something like that is the reason SOB turned it down. It sounds weird alright.

i thought SOB was on a leinster contract because 2 years ago when he was out of contract (and Wallace was ahead of him ireland wise) leinster tied him down to a longer contract. assume he would go up onto IRFU contract when that expires.
Would assume the IRFU deals pay better than provincial contract.

If Trimble is getting paid by the IRFU, then does that mean he is paid in the Republic of Ireland? And does that mean he gets the tax break?

    That whole thing confuses me

Would it have anything to do with the fact that a player like SOB would be leaving his options open for a possible move to England/France etc.?
i feel that more players will follow Sexton to play abroad now that the 'ice has been broken'.!

Definitely not. He would have to be resident in the republic to qualify.
