I am not at all pleased by the recent upsurge in the use of "mom" instead of "mum" in the Irish media. This seems to mark another milestone in the transformation of Hiberno-English into mid-atlantic generic TV English. My explanation is the fact that in short words especially, the letter u and the letter o are pronounced differently.

Hub and hob are two different words for example. Same with tum and tom .

Mum and mom will be pronounced differently by anyone who understands how vowels work/ sound.
