Hunting knife.

Looking at getting my first dedicated knife to hunting.

What should one be looking for in a knife. I already know I want a rubber handle knife for grip. I don't think I want a gut hook as they might be hard to maintain. I was looking at a mid range buck knife or the gerber bear grylls series.

What's the opinions on folding or fixed blades any one with real world experience of these knifes. Is there other brands I should look at.

The fallkniven f1 is a good knife and has a rubberyish handle like you want. I own two of them :pac::)

If you want a good folder then i would say a spydeco tenacious they are cheap but very well made and the blade steel is quite good.
I would stay away from the likes of the bear grylls stuff.

I have an array of knives (not as many as i once had), but use two for all my hunting needs. The Buck Alpha,

    and Muela.

    41NUqd1KTcL._SL500_.jpg

The Buck as it's fantastic, plain and simple, and the Muela for the "dirty" work so if there is any damage i'm not annoyed, and it has a gut hook which i find very useful.

    +1.

Made the mistake of buying one of the new Gerber Grylls knife. It's a blunt hammer of a knife, and feck all use in hunting terms.

A blunt hammer I haven hear that one before ye I suppose it would make sense if it was ****e alright.

I have a couple of older Gerber knives and they are great quality, sharp, holds a good edge. The Bear Grylls one is very dull, not very practicable other than for chopping/heavy work, and frankly a little bit of a gimmick (again in hunting terms). It was released as a response to the popularity of the show, and to suck in the fools (hence the reason i bought one :D)

After losing/leaving behind several expensive knives in the field I now use a cheapo knife with a hiviz handle or a bit of hiviz paracord attached for when it gets lost in the heather. MORAKNIV of Sweden do a good range of knives with a plastic sheath starting at around 20 quid. Not the end of the world if ya lose it or leave it behind

    One shot on kill,
If I could only have one knife for gralloching and butchering it would be this one.

You can go crazy and get a nice little set like this. But when you get handy, all you really need is a nice boning knife.

With the inexpensive cost of a gut hook, it wouldn't hurt to have one too.

Just make sure the handles are rubber and that they do not fold.

There might be a smattering of rubber handled knives in there .

I have a Buck 119. Excellent all-rounder. Handle is bakelite-type, which put me off initially, but it actually grips as well as anything for some reason (try the fairy liquid test).

Was going to get a SOG, but too rich for me.

I have a Buck Alpha folder like the one shown by CASS but with a rubber grip, it is my edc knife and is easy to operate with cold or wet hands, it is also easy to clean. It took a bit of work to get a good edge but it holds the edge Ok, I'm a woodworker so know how to keep things sharp. I also have a Puma White Hunter which will slice tomatoes with one edge and chop bones with the other but that is getting up the price ladder.

The general consensus would seem to be DON'T use a folding knife for hunting.

When used for the grolloch or skinning the blood 'n guts get into the workings of the knife and WILL therefore harbor germs etc. and would be the cause of carry over of infection to the next kill.

A NON-Folding knife can be put through the dishwasher to disinfect it completely.

I'm lucky enough to own one of Davy Moore's custom hunting knifes. A joy to use (yes I did get to grolloch a deer with it) and very well balanced.
Do a search on this forum for more details about his knifes. I'm sure he could do a different grip if that what you need.

i use one of these, they are cheap as you can pick them up as "mil surplus" the blade holds an edge well and the saw will go through bone in no time, if required.

I think this is the one your talking about , it is one of my favourite knifes and it is nice and compact . It holds a good edge lovely balanced knife for the money . A friend of mine got it for a present for me in america for 30 dollars (it was on sale ).. would highly recommend it .

Also you asked about folding or fixed blade ... well my preference is fixed reason been.... easier clean and keep clean ... safer .. ive had a few nics due to things getting stuck in closing mechanism , Granted these are often times im in a rush but still it wont happen with fixed blade . I also have other knifes but you were asking about this one .

    R&S

Do you think the 12pt is a good size at 9.5 inches.

I was looking at the buck alpha just there now that looks well also.

sorry osok i meant to type 10pt ... I also have a 12pt in camo handle might sell it to ya :D.. but to be honest its too big for fallow imo ...i would recommend the omni 10pt and if you look around you will get the gut hook separate like in mine but it fits into sheat in its own compartment , not a must have but a like to have .

whatever you decide make sure what you get can hold an edge is not to difficult to resharpen.
as said a folder can harbor dirt and grime but a stainless one can easily be washed and cleaned.
go with your budget and base your decision on what you want to spend.
right now i have a cheap ganzo that i always have in my pocket when out and about in the fields and woods.
got as a gift but think you can get them for about 20, 25 euro
folders are handy but i prefer fixed blades. with that said am really liking this ganzo im sure a quick google search should turn up a supplier.
    Closed length: 12.5cm
    Overall length: 22cm
    Blade length: 9.5cm
    Blade thickness: 0.4cm
    Blade material: 440c
    Handle material: G10
    Blade hardness: +-58HRC
    Lock mechanism: Axis Lock

That's actually a prity nice knife infairness. I suppose it holds an edge well if you didn't say anything bad about it.

posted up my thought on the knife on another forum.
hear is what i said about the Ganzo.

have been playing with it for awhile now, I did take it apart.. (well you do dont you??)
i resharpened it a few times and it takes an edge quite easily, and does hold it.
i did replace the washers for bronze phosphorus ones.
have been using it out doors and around the house on many tasks and have to say it is holding up well.
the opening action is extremely smooth (the bronze washers) but was good even before i replaced them. the lock up is excellent with no play or lock rock and i love the self adjusting axis lock even if it is a rip of the benchmade.
the blade centering is spot on. (better than some of my more expensive knives)
pocket clip is excellent though only tip up and right side.
the G10 scales are excellent, the liners are not milled out so is a little on the heavy side but i like that. overal fit and finish is excellent. i think i will be getting me a bunch of these as presents for friends at least 15 or 20. (christmas is sorted) and some of there other models as well to see what there like.
have to say one of the best folding knives i have used in a very long time, and i am very, very picky, only negative i can find is no lanyard hole.
as an every day low budget knife i dont think this can be beat, you get a lot of knife for your euro way better than any of the keshaws, gerbers or chinese made spydercos on the market and easily a match for the bucks.
i know a little bit about knives and this is a rockingly good knife..
and lets be honest it looks freaking cool.

Have a look at The Hunting Life website.

There is a guy on there called Midnight Knives and he makes excellent knives, I got one from him recently, a great bit of kit.

Great knives at very affordable prices.
