If you'd have asked me last year, it would have been Galway but I've changed my mind and would prefer to live in Dublin, been in UCD for 5 years now so fancied a changed of scene with trinity but not meant to be, UCD will have to put up with me for another 2!

Sorry, I don't mean to derail thread, but social work masters is completely not my field, so I know virtually nothing about it, but I have heard so many people mention it and with a waiting list it seems incredibly popular course to do. I'm just curious as to what peoples ambitions are, in terms of career are there great jobs? Or is it a passion for social work?

Also, much money in it?? :D (again, just curious, not my field of study at all!)

Waiting on NUIG also..just checked ive got no updates at all. Does the PAC status change on receipt of any notification? Id like to know either way now if i got it or not!

    Hi Jackass,

The masters gives you the professional qualification to work as a Social Worker in Ireland. All Social Workers are now required to be members of CORU (the regulating body for this field) and they require you to have done a Social Work masters or equivalent course.

From my own experience, I have never known anyone to do this course without having some desire to be a social worker in some capacity. Its a great base and helps with lots of different social work roles (such as medical, probation, child protection, drug/alcohol abuse, disability etc etc).

Definitely not a course to do if you are looking to make money. The job would be reasonably well paid except the tax is absolutely mental. Given the massive amount of stress that most social workers are under, especially within child protection roles, it really isn't worth the money (in my opinion).

You do it for the love of the job, nothing more.

    Hi theskin,

Nope haven't heard anything from Trinity.. I don't think I will either because I'm in band 3... so I think at least 10 people will have to turn it down before I get an offer.. not holding my breath!

Hey I found out I got into Ucd, does anyone know what there timetable is like and can you have some say on your placement as I'd love to have placement in crumlin cause I know some social workers there?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 41 sexyfirepants

Congrats! I'll be seeing you in September so! :D

It's 9-5 Monday to Friday, although the timetable isn't rigid, some weeks you have more lectures then others.. attendance is taken at every lecture/workshop so they are pretty serious about it.

Umm.. I think they do consider what preference you have on where you work but not sure whether they will allow for you to work in an area where you know someone else already there... I'll check for you because one if my friends that is on the course just finished her placement today..

Wahhhooo can't wait aw that's grand so, yeah I know them there but sure it's the field I wanna work in I had to get in contact with them durin the year to learn more about social work so it's the only reason why I know a few of them

You have no say on where your placement is. You can suggest it, but they honestly don't listen to you. In my year, there was a girl who stated that she did not want to work in a hospice as her grandmother had recently passed, and thats exactly where they put her. You'd actually be better of NOT saying anything.

oh, they give a "suggestion sheet" alright, but its totally useless :P

Timetable is pretty full on. 9 - 5 every day.

what are people doing for accomodation?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 41 sexyfirepants

Probably be looking online I'd say.. UCD have set up a website this year which advertises accommodation and digs, but you'll need a UCD email account to sign up to it...

    Heya,

Just answer honestly. Give detail and be succinct about it. It's a fairly straight forward application, but answering honestly is your best bet. Give details about any volunteer work you've done or any work within a relevant role would be a good place to start.

Hello all students of UCD. I have an interview next Friday morning for masters in social work. I would be grateful if any of ye current students or anybody who attended an interview last year would forward me on the format of the interview & what type of QS are asked?

    Thanks.
