I know a guy teaching that does one better, finishes on friday about 1pm, heads straight to the airport and off somewhere for the weekend, arrives back into the airport monday morning and back in the class for 12pm Monday. He would do about 10 trips away a school year. Says its the handiest number ever

The holidays are definitely savage - but I wouldn't do it. Dealing with lads all day who have mostly no interest in being there... or else screaming kids... or else parents who either couldn't give a crap about their kids, or cant accept their kid is about as smart as a potato...
    fcuk that...

Let ye who are saying tis a great job, go way and do it, and let us know how ye get on ;)

I think primary school the biggest thing coming from the OH is what happens outside of school. She is teaching in country school with half dozen teacher size. The stories are shocking and down right sad. Kids been mistreated by HSE, kids hungry and dirty, parents stoned and drunk, parents on suicide and self harm watch. a kid who slept in the garden shed. Thats all in the last year in a group of 90 between 4th, 5th and 6th.

So yes the teaching and holidays are great and job security.

But the above ****e, no thank you.

theres a good few giving out about teachers here and athey are prob the full time farmers.now whats easier milking cows or teaching little sh1tes that have no interest in being there.
you might get a cross cow that will give you a kick, but if you try and put manners on kids these days they will have you up for assault.
iam not a teacher but have plenty of friends, famaily that are and the sh1te that they put up with is unreal.

No doubt it can be tough at times.
I wasnt detracting from that. But lots of us have tough jobs and only get 21 days holidays. Teachers are paid in respect of how tough their jobs are, my issue is with the additional paid portions and the madness of their holiday entitlements. Anyone defending that is just blind to the facts of it.

if you think they have such a good job why dident you become one bbam?
not every one is cut out to be a teacher and that is why there is a lot of sh1te ones.
its easy for people to give out when all they see is how long there holidays are and entitlements they recieve.
i get the impression that people think could be a teacher but you never see them go for it.

i dont mean to single you out bbam even though it looks that way.

my mam was a teacher, and a good few of my friends are also from primary teachers to university lecturers... each job is hard and as others have said they are rewarded with fantastic holidays... i know i wouldnt be able to put up with the crap from parents and rather than biting my tongue would tell them to fook off.... one parent wrote a letter into the school asking teachers not to use the word mammy as it is american slang for slave apparently:eek: that person has too much time on her hands imo

Our engineering teacher begged me to go on and do it but I had my Mind set on other things. Do I regret not doing it, probably sometimes. Handling kids is like any other job, once you set your mind to it you'll get it done.

I'll stand my ground in saying teachers holidays need addressing.
As do many other facets of public administration.

    What did you choose instead?

Maintenance Engineering. Then splintered off to do another degree in business management.
As if one qualification wasn't enough.

And I drove a truck for two years.

Not to get into an argument here and I don't want to derail the thread, so I will make one post on this topic.
Yes the summer holidays are a great perk. The pay is reasonable and working conditions, though deteriorating are reasonably good.
Lets look at the issue of the summer holidays though. Why do people want them cut? Is it because they want more free childcare or is it that they don't want anybody to have better conditions than themselves. If it is number 1 then be ready for more after school childcare because if the holidays are cut the school day will shorten. Finland is the poster boy for education arm and their teachers have 28.9% less class contact time than Ireland. If you are looking for good teaching as some have said in this thread you need to allow preparation time and lots of it. If people want them cut for reason two, well go suck lemons:-P.

Every job has it's perk. Farming you're your own boss. Teaching is Summer holidays.

Three people you can't or maybe shouldn't talk money to, farmers, teachers, and nurses.

Have you any bother keeping smocht on your pupils Juniorhurler ?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,363 ✭✭✭Juniorhurler

I think Moy they keep it on me:-D.

Not really. 99.9% of youngsters are bang on, even ones who the parents do all in their power to destroy. Also my subjects are enjoyed by the vast majority and seen as a welcome break from the grind of acadaemia so that does help.

    Agree.
Teachers should run summer schools during the summer, kids can be sent in add-hock.
It's a mockery. I know two teachers who head off to France am are reps on a campsite for the summer while being paid by the state back home.
If they do online courses over the summer they get paid days off during ye school year. If they correct exams they get extra pay. If the work in the summer tuition scheme they get extra pay.
I don't take the whole 9 months salary paid over 12 months malarkey.

The number of working parents that pay extra child care over the summer while their taxes pay for teachers to have the summer off. It's madness.

You might still b able 2 do the h dip this year if ur lucky. Then watch the money roll in.
