Chocolate porridge? Sounds a bit like nutella on brown bread. Just....wrong.

So I did a quick test this morning, 50g of uncooked oats with 200ml of Hazlenut milk came to a cooked weight of 275g

Something's not right there... Unless Hazelnut milk is significantly denser than water, which I'm willing to bet it's not. Calibrate your jug? 200 mL of water should measure just under 200 g. Milk less.

    Depends on the brand.

    Here is one list
Water, Sugar, Hazelnuts (2.5%), Tri-calcium phosphate, sea salt, Stabilisers (Locust bean gum, Gellan gum). Emulsifier, (Sunflower lecithin), Vitamins (Riboflavin (B2), B12, E, D2)
Sugar water should be denser, so even if hazelnuts are less dense than water this could be denser overall. I am not sure if hazelnuts are less dense than water, if they float they are, but it might have trapped air.

Oh god I LOVED chocolate ready brek. It's come back once or twice over the years and I've gone and bought boxes of it even though I'm a grown up now. Wonder if it's still around... I love nutella on brown bread too :D

I've tried adding protein powder to my porridge but I've always fecked it up and ended up with a dry lumpy mess. I've been attempting to add it to cooked porridge, I'm guessing this is a no no? Might try adding it BEFORE cooking it tomorrow morning.

I'm not sure. I just added it and that's what came out on my digital scales. I've a small 80ml jug thing and I used 2 1/2 fillings of that for the measure, It might not have been exact but shouldn't have been more than 10ml off

I might try it again tomorrow to see.

For protein powder, I cook the porridge then throw in a scoop and some extra milk, then just mix it for about 30 seconds. Works well for me.

As was mentioned by a rubadub earlier, you don't have to heat the oats. I mix my chocolate whey with milk in a shaker, add it to my oats, leave it while I have a shower, get changed, and by the time I'm finished that the oats are pretty soft and mushy. I hate warm food when I'm just up.

You don't have to cook it of course. Uncooked oats can be just thought of as muesli without the nuts & fruit. I eat raw oats mixed with cold milk and some maple syrup mixed in, and sometimes unflavoured whey protein powder. Some find cooked stuff more filling, and nicer on cold days, I prefer the cold version. It could be put in a thermos bowl and brought in cooked.

I've always preferred uncooked oats with cold milk. Is there any nutritional value to heating the oats/milk?

I'd imagine uncooked oats could be a little harder to digest, increasing the chances of it going through your system without it being completely broken down. This would mean potentially less bioavailable calories.

Realistically the differences is likely negligible tho if there is any at all, so you should just go with whichever you prefer.

OT here but does anyone else reckon Flahavans also makes Kavanaghs (Aldi)? It's remarkably close in taste (to me at least).

Maybe, maybe not. But it's a natural product with minimal processing.
It could be the same producer, or grown on the other side of the country, but steamed and rolled by similar equipment.

That's true. Didn't think about it like that. Either way it's great value and tastes good.
