All new cars are much of a muchness. In general there is no such thing as the brand/model to avoid any more imo (new).

Though if I was to pick something second hand capable of intergalactic mileages? E91 Starlet/E100 Corolla. Anything with an XUD diesel.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,354 ✭✭✭Sobanek

    Opel
    The second hand market, well:
Straight-Six BMWs with M50 engines (E34 525i etc.) - seen a couple of those with 500k kms on them
    Non-turbo Diesel Mercs - W124 200d - capable of doing over a million kilometres.

I can think of a dud from almost every manufacture in that list. Except Citroen. They're brilliant. :pac:

    Honda, no question.
It's not even on the poll though.
I agree, Suzuki should be there, and Subaru, and despite the laughter Fiat deserves it's place above many others on that list.

I thought that Mazda had made top of some list or other for this.

As others have asked, is the question relating to car serviced at the recommended intervals and given the occasional wash or ones that are driven into the ground by the majority of owners?

Newer Honda's are more than OK. They're typically better than everything else. Toyota have actually more issues and flaws in more of their cars in the last 10 years than Honda. Honda in the 90's were 100%, but while that might have dropped to 90% now a days, it's still leading the pack.

This poll is hardly accurate but I'd say on the basis of multiple tyres kicked and on top of what Joe from down the road said about his 09 Accord.

As said already starlet ep91, in fact any toyota with a 4efe engine they are absolutely bullet proof once kept serviced and topped up with oil. I have a TDI leon at the moment with an agr engine, 230k miles and not a bother on it

Great stuff, I could browse that data all day. As a Passat owner this caught my eye:

1.2% fail on Brakes (56% better than other 2008 cars)
0.027% fail on Hand operated control valves (28 times worse than other 2008 cars)
0.027% fail on Operation (46 times worse than other 2008 cars)

No idea what it means but sounds bad!

An 09 Accord is actually a fine car.. maybe you should stop listening to what "joe down the road" is telling you about his Accord :p

The previous generation diesel accord wasn't all that reliable though by honda standards and neither where the ep civics.

Lol.........you should try asking Porsche owners and mention the words 'RMS' and 'cylinder wear' on them...............lots of 911's spend lots of times in the garage, and not for small stuff,either.............

Incorrect, the previous generation Accord diesel is one of the most reliable diesels of the modern era. A handful of problems with the exhaust manifold was covered out of warranty by Honda. Any other problems would be the same as any other car, probably down to the way it was looked after or injectors from washed diesel, or just one-off's that every make and model in the world has.
Just because it wasn't as reliable as some 90's Honda petrols doesn't mean it's an unreliable diesel.

They're all equally only average for reliability. Audi less so because typically there's more in them to go wrong.

I think it's interesting to see people's perceptions. Around 20% of those polled at the moment have picked a VW group brand as the most reliable. Fiat was left off the list and a few people have joked about their reliability. Yet if you look at the latest whatcar reliability survey, Fiat does better than all VAG brands.

The Whatcar top 10 is dominated by the Asian manufacturers, yet about half the responses to this poll have been for US and EU makes. I would wager a lot of people buy their next car based on their perceptions rather than cold hard facts.

I never said they weren't reliable. What I said was by honda standards they aren't. On top of what you listed timing chains and steering racks can also give trouble in them.

The vags you call average for reliability have a more reliable (in 1.9tdi form) engine than the diesel engine in the accord.

The 1.9 TDi is about on par for reliability, maybe slightly ahead, but way, way behind in every other respect. It's an old out-dated engine. And it's only 1 engine in the VAG. That doesn't account for all the crap engines and auto and manual boxes, and electrics, and general blowing bulbs to beat the band - you'd have a fair collection of €60 fines in a VAG car before VW decided that they had better go for LED clusters at the rear...

All in all though I would never by anything other then German coz when they are running they are a pleasure to drive and they just don't squeak or rattle regardless of age, savage build quality.

No a 1.9tdi is far more reliable imo and apart from it being out dated it's still one of if not the most reliable diesels out there. Now don't get me wrong im a big Honda fan and Im generally not a fan of vag stuff, but id still choose the 1.9 Tdi any day over the 2.2cdti honda engine.
