on rte they mention in detail that the next one is passing very near to our planet and thus may effect its orbit resulting in missing some months to its orbit. hope it misses winter months and not the summer ones

What nobody has yet mentioned is this is the first time in our scientific era that people have actually been injured by a space rock, I mean think about that for a moment, its just so incredible!

not the first time but it is the largest one, but most injurys were from broken glass

It appears the Sky is falling... Meteorites have started falling in Russia, more than likely nothing to do with the huge meteorite meant to pass by closely today so no need to panic.

What was the meteor launcher thinking?
It should have targeted an anglo-saxon english speaking land to crash in order to get maximum publicity

So nothing like this will ever happen again :)

    trajectory implies it's a coincidence.

Also, I can't be the only one who thought Chablinsk sounded like a map in DayZ.

No as another poster pointed out is a coincidence. This asteroid is so close though its a bit scary. To put it in perspective the close approach of the asteroid represents only 15 mins in the earths orbit around the sun. Had it arrived 15 mins earlier it would be on a direct collision course with our planet with a kinetic energy of 3.5 megatons. 15 mins is the time difference between nothing and a rock with 200 times the energy of the bomb that was dropped on Hiroshima slaming into earth somewhere. Food for thought indeed.

Is that 15 minutes Irish time?

no, just earth time. an irish minute is 1.25423 of a standard earth minute so poster above means 1128.807 irish seconds.

The Asteroid passing tonight is so close that it could take out a few satellites. There might be a lot of pissed off people that will lose their TV or phone coverage.

As i mentioned in the other thread the conspiracy theorists are going to have a field day with this given the areas grim history as a secret city which (probably) used slave labour for nuclear processing

    Serious question here........

Would your house insurance pay out for damage to the house due to a meteor or injury to yourself from windows breaking and showering you in glass???????

Maybe the one tonight is hitting and they just don't want to cause widespread panic before the endtimes. Just putting that out there :pac:

Looking at some of those dashcam videos I'd say there were some serious brown pants moments in Chelyabinsk.

My first reaction would have been 'ah Chto za huy, have the Amerikanskis nuked us?'

i reckon this may in fact have been a peaceful and tragically failed attempt at making contact by aliens from the andromeda galaxy…the crashed objects were a landing craft (i.e. its exploded parts) on a diplomatic mission carrying the alien ambassador and an intergalactic gift hamper (with the cure for cancer and the plans for a fusion reactor etc.) as a gesture of goodwill to all mankind…
unfortunately they lost their way a little and came out above the ural mountains, also they had not allowed for russia’s air defense systems…surely the russians have invested a bit in air defense after that german guy was able to fly his cessna to moscow in the late 80s and it seems some missile operator was awake for once…so let us just wait and see when the alien retaliatory campaign comes upon us…
