According to unconfirmed reports, the meteorite was intercepted by an air defense unit at the Urzhumka settlement near Chelyabinsk. A missile salvo reportedly blew the meteorite to pieces at an altitude of 20 kilometers.

At its closest approach, which will occur at 7.24pm Irish time, the asteroid will pass about 27,520km above the planet traveling at 13km per second, bringing it nearer than the networks of television and weather satellites that ring the planet.

It appears the Sky is falling... Meteorites have started falling in Russia, more than likely nothing to do with the huge meteorite meant to pass by closely today so no need to panic.

So you've bascially started and ended your own thread with that post.

Jesus can you imagine how frightening it must have been to watch?!

I think I've watched too many disaster movies (and that Derren Brown thing at Halloween).

I'd start freaking the fúck out. And looting. All the looting.

Definitely a bit of state-sponsored bull****. These things are a few cm across travelling at thousands of km per hour. Not a hope in hell they could shoot it down.

This is becoming too much like the movie Deep Impact. Especially now that America really does have a black president. So.. where is the highest place in Ireland? Something tells me I should go there right now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,382 ✭✭✭gjc

There is an asteroid passing the earth today around 5 o clock Irish time (nasa have been tracking it for a year) sky experts said there is no connection between the two..... Too much of a coincidence for me so if your going for high ground you have 7 and half hours to get there or else get out your manual..... Chicken licken

Defo. We wouldn't have a hope in hell of intercepting a meteor in atmosphere.

Tell that to he dinosaurs. :) The one that helped do them in left a crater 180 clicks across.

I've already read two websites with a few conspiracy crazies telling us the end of the world is nigh etc.

Pity, cause I just put the washing out and it's a great day for drying.
